Queen Victoria by Franz Xaver Winterhalter, 1856.

Winterhalter started painting on 02 May 1856 and finished on 10 May. On the same day, 10 May, Queen Victoria wrote about the painting in her journal:  “A much warmer day. — Dear Mama breakfasted with us. — Visited dear Aunt Gloucester, whom I thought particularly well, & saw Dr Fergusson, who has been the Paris to see the Emperor, of whom he does not give a good account, & says is far from well, being obliged to follow a “régime”, to set himself right. The poor Empress is not ill in health, but has not yet recovered the results of her severe confinement, which incapacitate her from standing or walking, & this may possibly last for a good time longer. It is most sad, and I fear she will get into low spirits, if she cannot go about with the Emperor. The boy, Dr Fergusson says, is magnificent, but not kept quiet enough, & the Emperor & Empress do not seem to be properly attended to by anyone! — Went later to take leave of good Winterhalter who has done really a fine picture of me, & a very like, & pretty sketch of Vicky, in her Drawingroom dress. — After luncheon, we started for Osborne, with all the Children, Fanny Gainsborough, Emily Cathcart, Cols: Phipps & Biddulph, Capt: Du Plat, Mr Gibbs, & Lieut: Cowell. We found it quite mild & pleasant, & there was no wind for the crossing. Everything very green & bright, but not forward. — We took a walk & heard the nightingales singing in the wood, near the sea. — We had taken leave of Gen: Grey before leaving London. He is starting for St. Petersburg almost immediately. — Vicky, & Sir J. I was bored one day and designed some device wallpapers with the Persian civ logo and colors. If anybody wants to use them, here they are!

The top one is in landscape style (useful for computers and tablets), while the bottom one is in portrait style (better suited for phones).

(Maybe I’ll be inspired to make some more wallpapers someday with the logos of my other favorite civs…)
