i need help about exchange programs for a story

hey everybody, Im not american (srry my probably poor english) but im writing a story about a character doing an exchange program in california, and would be lovely if someone could help me with this specific scenario, like how the search for a job works, the support of the agencies, house and etc (i am brazilian so if a brazilian or latin american doing the exchange program could help i would be very grateful)

more context of the oc doing the program: he is going to an culinary college and is all alone (because of personal things he doesent have family to help him and almost his ffriends r in his home country) he worked pretty hard to get the necessary amount of money to do this so he isnt
