What conclusions can you draw about the future of television viewing?
The future of television is shifting away from cable and closer to streaming. Usually, television made money from advertisements and subscriptions. One currently has the option to access Hulu, Netflix, Roku, Amazon, and many more companies offering the same services without paying fees to the cable providers. One may save about $600 per year by streaming video, therefore, cable companies are providing very little value.
Woody Allen has agreed to produce a series on Amazon Prime. Also, Yahoo announced the rights to stream a live NFL game this year. Google owns YouTube and has two steaming devices on the market - Chromecast and Nexus Player. They already developed their Google Fiber service in five cities. Many of the programming networks to enter an activation code tied to a cable subscription. HBO just launched HBO Now, a service that permits consumers to access the pay channel directly without a cable subscription. So consumers get the programming they want and the company gets to keep all of the subscription revenues.
Cable boxes primaritoy serve to maintain cable companies’ role as advocates through their agreements with broadcasters. That is not a credible business model with the recent popular trend of inexpensive streaming devices. In conclusion, cable businesses will soon be a thing of the past.

Reaction to the Anti-Islam rallies in the United States.
What if you could talk to one of the protesters and what would you say to that person?
When the opportunity arises for me to speak to a demonstrator, I will do my best to develop self-reflexivity because it is vital to understand ourselves and position in society. “ When learning about other cultures and cultural practices, we often learn much about ourselves.” Rather than pushing Islam faith out of the United States, I suggest the demonstrators rally behind the Islamic faith in order to get a better understanding of oneself. “Knowing who you are is never simple; rather, it is an ongoing process that can never fully capture the emerging person. Not only will you grow older but your intercultural experiences will change who you are and who you think you are.” Most protesters at rallies are looking at another person’s culture from a distance. "As we have learned from experience in the past, the best way for the average person in our community to handle these incidents is to ignore them," Dearborn Mayor Jack O'Reilly wrote Friday on the city's website. "The demonstration is not really a forum for honest dialogue, and anything that intensifies emotions will only intensify conflict." http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/anti-islam-rallies-across-usa-making-muslims-wary/ar-AAfiZgw . By ignoring these protesters, it will only make matters worse when tensions rise to the surface then it becomes a physical altercation. Demonstrators hearts are filled with emotion leaving little room for logic in their minds. Instead of Mayor O’Reilly’s motif for ignoring the issue. As a society we must educate our peers about co-existing with another religion. Engaging in dialogue with different cultures is a successful way to comprehend individual’s beliefs and values.
Judith N. Martin, Thomas K., Nakayama pg. 36-37.
Understanding cultures is just the beginning steps in getting along with one another. “Appreciating intercultural differences ultimately promotes clearer communication, breaks down barriers, builds trust, strengthens relationships, opens horizons and yields tangible results in terms of business success. The foundation of all intercultural communication is respect. By demonstrating respect one can earn respect and help create more open and fruitful relationships.” By explaining these key points to a protester, hopefully this would be the last time they attempt to demonstrate insensitivity at an Anti-Islam rally. If our country as a whole can have an educated open mind to Islamic faith, then we are moving in the right steps to deter nationalism and ethnocentrism from the United States. Finally, I would ask one of the demonstrators to put themselves in the position of American-Islams. Imagine if christian Americans moved to the Eastern hemisphere and was shunned from his/her faith because a radical christian gave your religion a bad reputation.

What are the different ways identity plays a role in how people behave, are treated, organize and are discriminated against?
“Intercultural Communication in Context” , Sixth edition, Judith N. Martin, Thomas K. Nakayama p. 186-187.
Gender Identity is the identification with the cultural notions of masculinity and femininity and what is means to be a man or a women. Our expression of gender not only communicates who we think we are but also constructs a sense of who we want to be. Initially, we learn what masculinity and femininity mean in our cultures. Communication scholar Julia T. Wood has identified feminine and masculine themes in U.S. society. These are the femininity themes: appearance still counts, be sensitive and caring, accept negative treatment by others, and be a superwomen. The masculinity themes are don’t be female; be successful; be aggressive; be sexual; and be self-reliant.
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/03/sports/ncaabasketball/pay-for-womens-basketball-coaches-lags-far-behind-mens-coaches.html?_r=1
Women’s basketball coaches are getting paid significantly less than men’s college basketball coaches. For Division I basketball, the average salary for coaches of a men’s team $329,300 in 2010, nearly twice that of coaches for women’s teams, who had earned an annual salary of $171,600. Over the past four years, the average pay of men’s head coaches increased by 40 percent, however, only 28 percent for women’s coaches. Women coaches in the NCAA are being treated with less respect men’s coaches because women’s basketball less popular and lacks physicality unlike the men’s league. Women coaches are being treated unfairly even though they are doing the same exact job as the men coaches in collegiate basketball. The salary for men and women coaches should be correspondent because of the Equal Pay Act of 1963, which prohibits an employer from discriminating in employment based on pay and other conditions. Unfortunately, it is evident that this act does not pertain to women’s college basketball coaches.

Personable- I would like to be identified as a personable individual because my sociable behavior reflects who I am in the eyes of others. Communicating and getting along with my peers, professors, employers, etc. is extremely effortless for me. Also, having a friendly personality is a very advantageous trait to have in order to improve myself in today’s society.
On Saturday September 19, 2015 I attended Oktoberfest at the Frankford Hall Beir Garden with my friends when a complete stranger approached me. The intoxicated 29 year old women aggressively maneuvered her way onto my lap. Instead of being distant and asking her to leave me alone, I decided to play along and make the best of the situation. In one of the most awkward moments of my life I was able to remain composed yet outgoing while my friends laughed and took embarrassing pictures of me.
Motivated- Working in the United Parcel Service (UPS) warehouse is all the motivation I need to excel in life. Handling packages at frantic rate where the standard is unloading 800-1,200 boxes per hour, for up to 5 hours per day, 5 days a week is a living nightmare. Moving at such a fast pace in an extremely hot warehouse in the summer motivates me to do well in school or else I am at UPS the rest of my career working physical labor.
The motivation to succeed in school is through the UPS earn and learn program. UPS will reimburse me up to $25,000 in lifetime tuition. If pass all my classes with a D or better at the conclusion of the semester, then I will receive $2,500 from my company.
Caring- I believe it is important that caring for others represents me because i do not like to put myself first. I really take pride in helping people because there was a time when I needed support from close friends and family when I had my issue with substance abuse.
The United Way symbolizes why I care because it is a fundraiser that helps resolve pressing community issues. Also, this organization makes measurable changes in communities through partnerships with schools, government agencies, businesses, organized labor, financial institutions, community development corporations, and neighborhood associations. Every week since August 5, 2013 I donated $1 out of my paycheck to the United Way. Therefore, on days when i do not have time in my agenda to do volunteer work, i know my hard earned $52 per year is going to a great cause.

The Blue Book - Frank Rosa
“The duty and willingness to act as an enforcer of broadcast standards during license renewal applications, laying out four areas that its officials would be looking for as they considered renewal: a balance of commercial and sustaining programs, the provision of local live programs, the presence of public affairs programs that discussed public issues, and the elimination of advertising excesses. The blue book set the tone for considerations of television licensing and performance.” “Only Connect: A Cultural History of Broadcasting in the United States”, 4th edition, Michele Hilmes” p. 177
What is the function of The Blue Book?
In 1998, the Clinton administration analyzed the public concern of federal broadcasting laws as part of its report on policies for the up coming era of digital television. The primary function of Blue Book set the foundation for the Clinton/ Gore Campaign to strive for online content and applications that will help empower all Americans to use new technologies to their fullest potential. Broadcasting has had two general goals to accomplish in order to increase the forthrightness of the FCC. First, the goal was to improve the commercial development of the industry. Secondly, the goal was to ensure that broadcasting serves the educational and informational needs of the American people. The Blue Book specified the way the FCC would operate in order to determine the public interest performance of licensees at renewal time.
http://current.org/1998/12/the-public-interest-standard-in-television-broadcasting/
The FCC ensures access to the airwaves, therefore, it provides distinct aspects on public issues to strengthen news for public affairs programming. The commission is also responsible for developing quality programming appropriate for children. Maintaining a separate realm of high-quality, noncommercial television programming, the FCC makes sure that the guidelines in the Blue Book are obeyed.
