the whole kevin showing jean the articles about jeremy’s scandal to warn him is kinda funny because all jean got out of it was “ahh… jeremy hot” but also. the fact that he didn’t understand what kevin was showing him and kevin was annoyed that jean didn’t take the article as the warning that it was supposed to be is such a gut punch because jean literally didn’t know how to read english. he was always at a disadvantage in the nest because of the initial language barrier but at that point he could communicate well enough that kevin truly didn’t know that jean couldn’t read, or at least couldn’t read well. and no matter how hard jean tried, or kevin tried, to keep him safe it wouldn’t matter because the moriyamas purposefully made it so that jean would never have the tools or opportunity to be anything but a raven dependent on them and only them

literally every single time kevin and jean talk about neil they sound like a divorced couple arguing about their child...i thought it was just TSC but the first time jean meets neil 😭 even then it's giving 'you had custody! why didn't you raise him right?' 'we should accept him as he is.' 'fuck all that! he needs manners!' and neil is sitting there like why are my parents arguing about my behavior in rapid french no one but i can understand? i literally said please, i tried to be nice.

something I just love about aftg is Nora’s use of numbers as plot devices, as foreshadowing, as fate - however you want to put it

we talk about jean’s number a lot - a 3 becoming a 29, renee’s 9 combining with kevin’s 2 to give jean a new number that belongs to only him. but aside from their romantic ties to him, they are the two people that gave jean the chance to have this new future, any future. the 2 and 9 adding to give jeremy’s 11, another aspect of jean’s future (something about past experiences shaping your new ones)

neil moving from one #3 to another (“I would not have given him to you if I’d known you would just throw him away so carelessly”) neil’s birthday being 1/19 and jean’s 11/9 - fated misplaced forever partners

However her use of numbers in andrew’s life is often missed. cass being the 13th foster home. bee the 13th therapist. His and neil’s numbers adding to give this number again. A number first representing a horrendous experience is then echoed in every step andrew takes in dragging himself towards the first future he has allowed himself to see
