This is by far some of the best, really really bad noise that considers itself music, that I have heard in a long time.

Tombs - Ex Oblivion
I know Tombs, you know Tombs, we all should know Tombs by now. And if you know, you know that Tombs is never one to be beholden to one “true” sound. For each and every thing that has been released under the Tombs banner is somewhat different.
Now, with ‘Ex Oblivion’ Tombs have created an EP that changes from song to song. Definitely not the normal change in feeling you would normally get but much more drastic from track to track. From the “normal-ish”, for Tombs, opener to the Drone-ish closer you keep asking yourself; “Is this still Tombs or did it skip to something else”?
While the title track ‘Ex Oblivion’ is excellent and what you may somewhat expect from Tombs. The rest just feels like filler, to fill out an EP to be a vehicle to release ‘Ex Oblivion’ as an EP and not just a single. While it’s all pretty decent stuff; it just feels like there was stuff thrown together to make a release. Almost like a throw away to finish off a record deal. But in the end it’s really up to you. It’s Tombs. You know you’re gonna check it out and there is some good stuff here.

Perdition Temple - Merciless Upheaval
Over the last few releases from Perdition Temple it seems as if Gene Palubicki has really found his true stride, possibly maybe even his happy place (musically). Now that is not a knock on anything he has been involved with before, for it is all of the upmost quality. But there is just something about the last few releases that have a feeling and a touch that all the others didn’t. Whatever it is, I am not sure but there is just something there now that just makes everything so much better.
For those not in the know, Perdition Temple are a “Old School” Death Metal band that sounds modern while not being modern at all. What I mean is that they are a band whose base is rooted in the “Old School” era and feeling of Death Metal. And also the production of this album is magnificent. Each and every note of every instrument and vocal is crystal clear yet there is just the appropriate amount of grit and grime left on top to make it feel just right.
With ‘Merciless Upheaval’ they call it a full length but I would say it’s two EPs. One of original material and one a cover EP but I digress. Because in the end it really doesn’t matter. For every track on this album fucking slays and even with it being half originals and half covers it flows really really well.
Hate to say it; because I am sure Perdition Temple and Gene, in general, have heard this all before. But the easiest (laziest) way to describe what you will find within this album, and most of their releases, is to say that it’s a full-frontal assault, high-speed mixture of the best parts of Morbid Angel and Cannibal Corpse. Which is a good thing when it is written and performed as damn good as everything is on ‘Merciless Upheaval’.

Velnias - Rending of Dyadic Convolution EP
Starting off life in 2006 from Nederland in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado; Velnias were born. Starting off early on they were pert near a Wolves In The Throne Room clone. Thankfully, they have progressed and grown and added more influences and personal touches with each subsequent release.
"Rending of Dyadic Convolution" is their brand new three song EP. Where the bookend tracks are literally just an intro and outro. While the main track of this affair is eight and some minutes of Velnias taking "the path of intense cinematic imagery, capturing a stunning monolithic visual..."(per their bandcamp) The real meat of this EP here starts off sounding almost identical to Isis and then just builds and builds from there. Adding in layers and layers of influence and their own personal touches until it reaches critical mass. A jumble of Post-Metal, Post-Black/Black Metal, Doom and Shoegaze all intermingling in a gorgeous cacophony of wonderment.
While I would consider this more of a single than an EP per say, with the opening and closing tracks just being all part of the whole but none of that really matters. For whatever this piece of art is called in the end; art is truly what it is. And beautiful, disodant, lush, layered and chaotic piece of art at that.

Vvilderness - Path
Hungarian solo artist Vvildr is at it once again. Bringing forth upon us his fourth full-length album, Path, with his "band" Vvilderness. Vvilderness are a Folk tinged Atmospheric Post-Black Metal act that started in 2017 with the outstanding debut album Devour The Sun. This humble reviewer's first introduction to this act was his even more amazing second album, Dark Waters(which I happened to review for here as well). Then just one short year later there was even more growth and a general raise in level, to absolutely everything involved, that happened on third full-length; As Above, So Below. So going into this new album I personally had high hopes and a good deal of expectations for Path to lead me somewhere spectacular.
And disappointed I was not. For Path is outstanding and moving and there is some truly beautiful spectacularness to be found within. From the pretty melancholic parts to the glorious aggressive sections, the ebb and flow of the build up to crescendo and back down again, it's all so wondeful and emotional and just fucking amazing. There may be no reinvention of the wheel here, there may not be anything outstandingly different from other acts within the genre spector but what there is is a true understanding of songwriting and craftsmanship. An understanding that improves upon said wheel and furthers the genre to new, glorious and downright gorgeous heights.
Vvildr can convey the same amout of feeling, epicness and motion that most bands of this ilk take ten to fifteen to even sixty minutes to convey, in the span of usually seven minutes or less. Which may not seem like a lot but when you are a listener of albums and not singles it makes a major difference. You seem to crave it more when it is done. I love long songs as much as the next Folk tinged Atmospheric Post-Black Metal fan but there is something about an artist that understands how to give you enough to truly love and move you but holds back the perfect amount to make you crave more and more. And with Path Vvilderness has done this and more.
Personally I love this artists work and all aspects of it. From the album artwork, the music contained within said album and the equally impressive merch connected to said album cycle. All of which is available for you on bandcamp, my favmorite place to support the artists we love.

Now, I am one who never really comments on or writes about anything if it does not have to do with music. For the most part I am basically nonexistent online unless it has something pertaining to music period, with a heavy leaning on heavy metal. Yet tonight, tonight I feel like I have to say something, to get something out of my system that has been bothering me as of late. But first I have to admit something that is hard as well. I am guilty of being a racist.
Throughout my life I have said and thought things that are flat out racist. These things are nowhere near the core beliefs that my family raised me on. My parents always told us that everyone is the same so treat them as you would want to be treated and that is the way I have tried to raise my children. Although there were times that being in a very predominate white city made it hard to not participate in racist actions. In some situations, mostly work, if you were not seen to have the same beliefs or laugh at the same jokes, you were an outsider and vey much made to feel that way. So, to the better of my comfort, I gave in; I have said things and laughed at jokes and some of those thoughts sadly carried over. But not anymore. I am done with this stuff. I am tired of just saying "Oh that's just their generation" or "That's just the way they were raised." No more excuses, now is the time to change.
Through reflextion and talking with my wife and with my children openly and honestly about what is going on in our country and for how long, I finally see some hope. After watching the whole cycle of events happen in Minneapolis from the initial, horrifying video to every night and day of protests, riots and back to protests and even community block parties, on live streams, I see more hope and tangible change happening. Throughout our country and the world, things are starting to finally change. It is happening but it is nowhere near where we need to be in the end. I stand with Black Lives Matters. I do not fully understand everything yet but I will continue to educate myself and grow and hope that anyone reading this will as well. Let us stop being robots of time and actually make this change for the better happen.
I know there are many of you out there reading that get it and really, maybe I am just preaching to the choir. But I do hope that this can get out there. Because there is still a lot of ignorance, that I do see, out there from people within my age range, I am 40, that disgusts and confuses me. There is plenty more ignorance out there that disgusts me but let me talk to the ones I know I can connect with age and reference wise. Growing up to even now, do we not all know the words to most of "Straight Out Of Compton?" I know it was hard, edgy and cool for us white kids in the Midwest to sing along to that album. But did you ever really listen to what a lot of it was about? Was Body Count's "Cop Killer" not a huge thing for us? And we should all remeber the event from that song was influenced by. Right? Did we not all watch Family Matter and The Fresh Prince Of Bell Air? Did you forget the episodes dealing with racial profiling? Or how about the insanely tense cop scene in Boyz N The Hood? How did you feel after that? There is plenty more of these artists, songs, albums, shows and movies that we as a generation consider classic that I could use as an example but I think those should be enough to suffice.
As a white kid growing up in the Midwest I have been guilty of racism but I also understood a lot of what was happening to our African American brothers and sisters through their art. How could you have not? They were laying it all out there for us to see. How could you enjoy to even love any of it if you could not even try to begin to understand it? The message about what they had to deal with in their daily lives was pretty damn clear to me. And from what I am seeing from a lot of you it seems it missed its mark or maybe you just forgot. I hope you can reflect, look within yourself and back in to your life and understand that you do understand a little from the art we love, loved, like or even just enjoy and can always, always learn more and move forward.
Thanks,
Ben Schultz
