Bella was born on September 13, 1987 to Charlie and Renée Swan in Forks, Washington. When Bella was three months old the couple split and Renée left, taking infant Bella with her. For most of her childhood she remained with her mother, only visiting Charlie in Forks for one month out of the year each summer until Charlie started to vacation with her in California due to her distaste for Forks. 

Growing up, she always felt out of step with everyone around her, never feeling as if she fit in with those her age and not syncing well with most people. Even with her mother she didn’t always feel as if they were operating on the same wavelengths. Her mother was fickle with her interests, somewhat erratic and absent-minded. Often times, Bella felt more like the parent between the two of them, and early on she found herself taking on the responsibilities within the home. The role reversal forged her into a independent and dutiful person in her youth that sticks with her to this day.

At 17, she moved back to Forks with Charlie after her mother remarried. It wasn’t long after moving back to Forks that she met the Cullens and her life changed drastically—she’d say for the better. With Edward she found indescribable love, with the Cullens and inside the supernatural world they revealed to her, she finally found a place where she belonged and fit.
