the fact that they put anna and cas both in long jackets but of contrasting colors drives me up the WALL to this day because were they taking the opportunity to highlight how the two characters are simultaneously the same (rebellious angels) and opposites (anna’s fall premeditated and clean vs cas’s impulsive and messy, anna driven by philosophical disillusionment vs cas driven by emotion without ideology, anna’s belief that you should disengage from the system entirely vs cas making constant attempts to Fix it)??? no they were not

we all know part of the reason supernatural is so busted is because it was written by over 50 people near-constantly contradicting each other. well here's a spreadsheet documenting the order of episodes by each person who had at least 5 writing credits on the show, so that if you so desire, you could experience: bedlundnatural, berensnatural, jennykleinatural, and even, if you really really wanted, bucklemingnatural.

Leviathan as Prototype angels. God's first attempt at creation, they were made to adore him and be ever worshipful, so they were made with an empty pit in them that could only be filled with his attention. They were made to be ever hungry for him, and for a time it was good. But then he grew bored of them, and turned his attenton elsewhere, and the pit in them grew angry and gnawing and they became desperate to fill it. So they fell on their father's other creations and ate and ate if only to get a taste of them. Finding they had become troublesome, God locked them away for the sake of his other creations, and finding himself now without dedicated worshippers, he began anew. So he made the angels, and he made them with an empty pit at their core that could only be filled with his attention, so they would be ever hungry for him. And this time, he neglected to give them mouths.

the thing about cas is that he is dr winchester's monster. like when we first meet cas he is intensely malleable. he's all mirror and imitation and anything you please. and dean loves this about him. like, free to be you and me and sex and violence are the same episode, because they're both dean's fantasy: instead of spending my life with sam, who i at this point have an incredibly difficult relationship with, i get to spend it with someone who fills sam's role but who is whatever i want. cas is the siren. he's a replacement for sam who is happy to be whatever dean wants. he's completely malleable he's a blank slate, he's happy for dean to teach him everything he needs to know about being a person.

and dean loves this! who wouldn't want a devoted companion who just wants to be whatever you want. but the thing is, dean doesn't grapple with the implications. like yes cas will do whatever he says and be anything he wants but he doesn't realize just how malleable cas is. and so he accidentally molds cas in ways he doesn't want and doesn't like.

like, first of all, he teaches cas to interact with the world in the same ways that he does. he shows cas that you have to be The One Individual Who Saves The World, he shows cas that love is Protecting Someone At All Costs Even Against Their Wishes, and so cas learns these things. so he turns around and tries to play the hero, and dean is like, wait no, that's my job. and he turns around and tries to love dean, and dean is like, wait no, i don't like this when i'm on the receiving end. i'm doing this for you, dean. i'm doing this because of you.

and then second of all, he shows cas parts of himself that he doesn't ever look at directly. like his relationship with cas has an undeniably erotic undercurrent, and so cas... reflects that back at him, without really understanding exactly what's going on. like cas picks up what dean is putting down and sends it back, and dean is like wait no, you're not supposed to say it out loud, what are you, gay? not for nothing, cas, but the last person who looked at me like that, i got laid.

so essentially dean creates cas, but sees himself in what he has created, and despises it. cas is dr. winchester's monster.
