“Oh, right. That must be weird for you, corazón.” He smiled, getting in the drivers seat and following suit. Once his seatbelt was buckled and he was ready to go he eased onto the road. “Trail mix, peanut butter cups and some cucumber sandwiches for later.” He replied happily. “Oh, and I have some tamarindo sweets if you want to try them.” 

“Sounds delicious, especially the sandwiches. You really hit all the main food groups.” Jane ruffled through his bag, pulling one of the candies out. “Oh, I’ve had these before!” She pulled open the wrapper. “They’re sort of spicy.”

“Is that a trick question?” Dante asked, looking down at the huge backpack he’d packed. “Of course I am! I packed way too many snacks.” He replied happily.

“Oh, can you drive? I’m still getting used to your side of the road,” Jane laughed as she unbuckled her seatbelt.”What’d you bring me?”

“Oh, I–” It took the girl a couple of seconds to get her thoughts in order after Jane had popped out of the car; she did have a free day, after all. “Sure. Consider me officially tempted.” Nellie’s smile tugged at the corner of her lips as she made her way over to the passenger’s seat.

She unlocked the car, practically bouncing in her seat. “Grand! I hope I’m not interrupting your day. I just thought we may as well get out for a bit of fun.”

“Okay sure! I’m sure it won’t be too bad,” she hopped into the passenger seat of the car. “Is there anything cool on the path? I’ve heard people who have gone hiking and saw a waterfall or caves or stuff like that.”

Jane nodded, even if she was planning on taking the original hike, whether Kiara was ready or not. “Oh!” she perked up, “There’s so many wonderful things. This island is a wonderland of ‘cool things.’ I bet we’ll see some gorgeous birds, and there are falls, beautiful ones. You’ll love it.”

“Yes!!!” Maybe she sounded a little too excited, but she was eager to get out of town for a bit. “I have a lot of herbs I want to look for.” She said as she happily climbed into the car. 

Jane chuckled, slapping the door with excitement. “Ooh, what kind of herbs? I could help! I know loads about all sorts of plants.”

Elena looked around her. “Are you talking to me? I’m never one to turn down an adventure, but I just want to make sure I’m the one your inviting.”

Jane’s brow furrowed. “I hate to alarm you, but if you’re seeing anyone else round, you’re hallucinating.” She motioned towards her. “Get in, love.”

Kiara jumped up, heading over to the car. She didn’t know Jane very well, but she was always down to make new friends. “Sure! But you have to promise that it won’t be too difficult of a hike?” She looked sheepish. “I’m kinda a beginner.”

Jane grinned, excited to have someone along for the ride. “We’ll start out easy, and if you’re feeling confident, we can kick it up a bit.” She started the car. “It’ll be  blast.”

Jane leaned out of the window, “I thought we could head inland, take a bit of a hike. What’d’ya say, are you coming?”

“I’m not hiding, I’m--” Jane motioned for Elyon to come towards her, then brought a finger to her lips. “Don’t make any noise, though. See those?” A flock of colorful birds were the object of her attention, and she was trying her best to study them before they got away. “They’re beautiful, but flighty.” A soft chuckle bubbled up from her chest at her own joke, which caused the birds to scurry away. She brought her palm to her forehead. “Bollocks.”

“Well, I--em,” Jane cleared her throat before tucking a piece of her hair behind her ear. “I was just walking through the city and thought I’d pop in. I don’t know why, as I don’t own a vehicle...” she trailed off, “Do you work here?”

“Either you’re an angel sent from Heaven or I fell asleep while working and I’m dreaming. Either way, you’re gorgeous. What’s someone like you doing at a shop like this?”

“I don’t believe we have,” Jane answered with a quick shake of her head. “I would love to! What do you need?”

“Hi! I’m Adella, I don’t remember if we’ve met before?” The young woman asked as she approached the other. “Sorry, my memory isn’t the best. But anyways, I’m asking people around if they want to help me make the Halloween decorations for the city center and Jack’s party. Would you like to help.”

“Your whole month, eh?” Jane blushed, her lashes fluttering as she looked to the floor. “Well, you brighten my whole year.” She nodded, “Things are always evolving.”

Jane grinned wholeheartedly, clasping her hands in his. “Oh darling, I’ve missed you too!” She sent out an air kiss near his cheek. “Oh, just lovely. I adore autumn, don’t you?”

Dante’s smile widened, the warmth in his eyes spreading through his chest too. “I feel like every time I see you my whole day brightens. More than a day. My month.” He chuckled, looking around at the orange trees and the crisp wind making them rustle. “Yes, a time for things to let go and evolve. And it’s so beautiful, isn’t it?”

Jane flashed a tiny smile as she tore her eyes away from her search for a moment. She immediately continued flipping through the records. “I’m searching for something a bit strange,” she sheepishly admitted, “I had hoped you’d have a copy of ‘Native Bird Calls of Costa Serena,’ but I’m not having much luck.”

“Hi, welcome to Top Ten records, may I help you with anything?” Anya asked politely as the person entered the establishment. She had to force herself not to wring her hands and keep a small smile on her face. She hadn’t gotten to do a lot of shifts alone in her part-time job and she was scared she’d screw up.

The warm smile on his face helped make his eyes twinkle as he looked at one of his closest friends. “How have you been, corazón?” He asked happily. “I’ve missed you.”

“Corazón, yo sé que están hermosos todos los pajaritos aquí...” Dante said. “But trust me, there’s even more over here and the view is awesome. I found this spot the other day while jogging!” He said excitedly, giving a little jump as he turned to Jane.

Jane, still not an expert in Spanish, worked hard to translate what he’d said. “More birds, yes?” she said finally, a brow raising. “Show me.”
