Haunted churches, no shadows from the congregation cast. You stand alone in the light of the tall windows, yet the warmth of the sunlight is the warmth of a family.

Haunted churches, wooden benches crisp and dry from years of exposure to the sun. Dust flies as you sit down in the middle row, amidst nothing and yet you can feel the air moving as they breathe. They breathe; the voices breathe.

Haunted churches, the organ plays along with the hymns. Faintly you may see a translucent sleeve fluttering or a hand clasped in prayer as the echoes of song fill the spacious dusty room. Although they are long gone, their voices still remain. Abandoned may the chapel be, yet it is never left.

And you dare not sing, not even in a whisper, lest your own voice disturb the echoes like ripples in water and cause them to disappear, perhaps forever.

For some hymns are meaningless to sing alone...
