Byleth is a Demon Theory
So there is a theory running around that Byleth is in fact a demon.
And let me just say I LOVE IT.
So for those who haven’t heard: Byleth’s name is a variation of the demon Beleth, a demon who is said to be a fallen angel and King of Hell, leader of 85 legions of demons. He is pictured below on his pale white horse with his band of trumpet players that always follows him around. (No seriously, Beleth has a band that follows him playing music when he arrives. Wonderful.) Also in the lower right hand corner is his symbol.
So there is a theory running around that this naming isn’t a coincidence, and that Byleth is indeed a demon prince, or at least symbolic of Beleth.
Now this theory could actually have some merit. A fast point: he story of Beleth’s time period falls in line with Byleth’s getup. But for those who do not know the press kit from e3 hints that the main conflict of the story appears to actually be a body called the Church of Seiros. (This going against a power body of people, also reminds me of the Senate from PoR and RD (Ike’s game for those who don’t know)). Going against a church?Means to me that a demon protagonist seems more plausible.
To help this ‘church is main villian’ idea, I would also like to point out that the women from the trailer, pictured below, could very well be the true main villian of this game. She might look all holy and just, but watch her expressions as her people fall one by one before her, protecting her from harm.
Emotionless. As her people die and even with LITERAL DROPLETS OF BLOOD FLYING PAST HER FACE, she is displayed as emotionless and uncaring.
The only care she displays is for this sword:
Which can be seen also in the trailer, devastating an army: now why would you hug something like that?!
Yeah. Don’t be fooled by her beauty. She just might be a beautiful villian, who may have once pocessed a good heart, but no longer.
Anyway, back to Byleth. If a church, and thus a goddess and other holy figures, are the main antagonists, then I welcome you to entertain the idea that a fallen angel demon can be a protogonist.
Now some more evidence supporting him would simply be his protrayed personality. Byleth is NEVER SMILING through the entire trailer. He honestly just looks like a sour guy who takes no shit. Which aligns with typical closed off, I have a dark past, kinda of character archtype. I imagine a very confused demon trying to help humans rise against the church, while simultaneously trying to understand humans. He was possibly an fallen angel for who knows how long, leading hell’s army. He’s bound to be something of detached from human’s ideals and emotions.
God, just look at that glare! Would you honestly be surprised if he was some detached demon?
This wouldn’t be the first time we’ve had demons in Fire Emblem, thinking back to the Demon King in Fe8. (Hmm wait a second… Demon King? This game could have some Sacred Stones connections to boot!) It’s not outside fe’s realm to house demons.
A head cannon I’ve been playing around with could be that Byleth was indeed part of the Church of Seiros, but fell out of favor with the goddess and her followers when things started seeming less black and white to him. He was banished and by one way or another becomes an Instructor to our trio of Lords to help them rise against the corrupted Church, indirectly leading this new army to right the wrongs the church has been causing.
It’s could make for a very compelling and interesting story. To have a church was once a trully righteous party, but seeing it fall in values to become this emotionless, controling body. So bad that even a demon gives it everything he has to save the world he once surved as part of the church.
Whether or not my personal head cannon pans out, I welcome our first ever Demon Lord and would love to see an interesting take on demons being the protagonist and goddesses/angels/clergy being the antagonists!
It’s just a theory, but gods, it would be cool!
Also, bonus if Byleth gets a band of trumpets following him around!
