This brings back fond memories of taking neighborhood walks and passing by an area where there was random asparagus growing in a neighbor's yard. It was so delicious and tender @bishkebab and I would eat it raw. I was bitterly disappointed years later when someone served me cooked asparagus at a wedding and it was like trying to eat wood.
I don't know what it is about fresh sugar snap peas but i see them and go into a fugue state where i must have them i must i will hunter-gather them from the side of the road and start wolfing them down like a starving feral dog happening upon a carstruck moose and then it's ten minutes later and I've eaten half a pound of them (or loaded 2lbs of them and two packages of growing seeds into my cart somehow???). last summer we went strawberry picking so I could make jam and stuff, and on the way back in to pay, I saw sugarsnap plants and had to restrain myself from swerving to a stop, but I still parked and just started grabbing handfuls of them as soon as I was out of the car and my partner didn't have to drag me off of the plants but only because i only have so much space in my hands, and we then had to admit to my crimes at the pay window because we didn't get a container at the start to harvest them but the guys just waved us off and I ate them like candy on the way home and I would do it again in a heartbeat with zero forethought what is in them that my body is lacking because it's gotta be something

Lines for Atlantis
i.
Atlantis is fine. Just ignore the wave, poised to fall. Don’t think about it crushing citizens and their careful gardens or running loose among porticos. Besides, the wave has been there for so long - you know the gods keep it suspended, holding it frozen for Atlantis, the city they love best.
ii.
Atlantis! who would have thought that this was how it would end: the wave, falling like splintering glass, foam dancing in public squares, salt crusting on windows, the sea we have so long loved and lived with betraying us. Did we anger a god? What offense could merit this destruction?
iii.
Atlantis is dead. The fish enjoy the meticulous care with which we raked our gardens, and where citizens talked politics sharks now swim. We do not exist. The waves have claimed even our ghosts. Was it our folly, to build beneath the wave? We should have known, should have seen, should have moved. We did not. If there are gods, they did not warn us. We deserved at least a warning. How could we have known that the wave, which had hung there, frozen, for so long would finally break?

Allergies can develop at any age. I regularly ate kiwis growing up with no issue, but when I had one a few years ago I was very surprised that they tasted a) not nearly as good as I remembered, and b) spicy. 🥲
man I’d never seen a guava fruit in person before so I took a bite of one @starfoozle had and I guess it was really underripe because my mouth instantly exploded in sharp pain and I STILL have painful mouth ulcers from it
doesn’t feel allergy-like but oh my god el was just munching on them like some kind of terminator

"An endangered bird famous for its elaborate leaping courtship displays is being reared in a special facility where the animals are able to develop their wild instincts.
With less than 600 individuals left in the wilds of Cambodia, conservationists have shown that the Bengal florican can successfully grow up in semi-captivity, raising hope that a safe and stable population can be reintroduced to prevent further declines.
A large facility inside the 144 square miles of forest comprising Phnom Kulen National Park is the world’s first assurance colony of this florican’s Indo-Chinese subspecies. As the name implies, it’s native to Bangladesh and India, where it is also endangered.
Amid waist-high grass, soft mesh netting divides areas for these members of the bustard family to grow up in seclusion. Minimal visual contact with their keepers ensures that these birds have room to practice all the important skills they’ll need for wild living—like foraging, keeping a lookout for predators, but most importantly for a florican, how to find a mate.
Tumblr media
All species of floricans look to dazzle prospective mates with a remarkable courtship display. Standing in high grass, they will leap between 6 and 9 feet off the ground whilst striking a heroic pose that involves tucking their legs up and leaning back.
Hardly flightless, their goal isn’t to take to the wing, but to stay airborne enough to attract the attention of a female, before falling back to the ground and disappearing among the grasses.
Unfortunately, these birds need grasslands to live in, but grasslands in their native range are rapidly being turned into agricultural land by a developing South Asian population.
Leaping into action
The Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity (ACCB) established the captive colony in 2019. Cambodia has a high degree of threatened biodiversity, with over 400 species listed as Endangered or Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, and 56 considered Critically Endangered.
The Bengal florican is just one of 30 such species held at the ACCB for future protection. The florican has just one remaining wild population of fewer than 600 individuals among the Tonle Sap Floodplains.
Conservationists from the ACCB work mainly to educate community members, especially Buddhist communities and students, about the plight of these ground-nesting birds.
Tumblr media
“By engaging with diverse groups, we hope to bridge the conservation gap across generations,” Christel Griffioen, ACCB’s Country Director, told the IUCN.
These connections with the community have proved vital to the ACCB’s work. During the florican breeding season, the ACCB is notified where and when a wild florican nest is located. Depending on the timing in the season and the placement of the nest, ACCB biologists may choose to leave the eggs alone, but if the conditions aren’t optimal for chick mortality, they will safeguard the eggs, hatch them in their facility, and rear the birds in captivity for eventual reintroduction into the wild.
So far, the 11 surviving birds hatched at ACCB from eggs laid in the wild, along with four wild-hatched birds that have been taken in for one reason or another, are living and developing well.
“A full-time team at ACCB is dedicated to hand-rearing newly hatched chicks until they’re old enough to feed alone. They’re then moved into a facility that mimics their habitat where they remain, with limited to no human contact, safely cocooned in taller grass and soft ceilings that allow the males to practice their mating display,” writes the IUCN, noting that Christel and her team are always trying to transfer what they know about these birds in the wild to their conditions at the facility.
The conservationists hope to form a captive breeding program to further stabilize the animal’s numbers."

My first car was named Christine, after the Stephen King book, because sometimes when you were turning the car would randomly lock itself.
My second car is named Hermia, because "though she be but little she be fierce." Only, I just realized she also has issues with randomly locking, and in fact is much more problematic about it than Christine ever was. Coincidence...?
ok no actually I do want to know your car's name if it has a name, and why. bikes and other vehicles also welcome! I had a bike named Mel after Mel Bush from Doctor Who, because it was red. I fell off and regenerated broke my arm

Honestly it was so heartwarming when having to tell my coworkers that my husband left me (not even a month after our fourth anniversary HAHA) was their immediate and unanimous reactions of a gently whispered "Fuck him" and an indignant shout of "What is wrong with him??"
the purpose of friends is to have people who unconditionally hate your shitty exes & relatives. like maybe YOU have a complex relationship with your father but i sure don't. i'm outside his house with a gun. he's not the unforgivable asshole who raised me he's just an unforgivable asshole

I am once again thinking about making a tiny ceramic Redwall for pet mice. (Do I have pet mice? No, not for over a decade now. Am I going to get pet mice? Not unless Vice gets real cool about a lot of stuff real fast. ) I just think it would be really cute and fun to do...
So here's the proposal: two story structure, with the bottom layer intended to be buried in deep litter, and the upper floor at 'ground' level. Maybe a bell tower? Definitely a rose window. Possibly a removable roof; certainly an open back like a dollhouse. All of it would be glazed and sealed (basically, like any food-safe dish) so it could be sanitized and kept clean.
IF I was going to be doing this, I would need to first build a slab storage rack, so that I could make and keep all my slabs at the right moisture level while working. That would require a run to the hardware store, which is dangerous for my wallet.
Is there any reason for me to be doing this? No. But it would be VERY cute.
