billy doesn’t expect him to do anything , at this point . they’re so focused on the injury that they don’t really – think that he was going to help them , in fact . they’re seething , teeth stamping down on their teeth , trying not to make another sound of hurt . they don’t want to cause him any trouble , at this point . because they’re trying not to … bother , in that matter .

a sigh leaves their lips , wondering what to say . they’re completely unsure of his assistance to them , nonetheless , still attempting to be careful , not to get too close . or to play the victim , but god – it hurts , the wound absolutely stings .

their hand is pressing down on their wound , eyes watching as he’s taking things out from his backpack . billy’s taking a moment , whatever , to realize what’s going on , rather – what’s happening , because billy’s paranoid . they’re not paranoid , paranoid , but they’re not completely sold on what he’s going to do . with their fingers painting over with their own blood , knees brushed against their chest , huffing as their chest heaves up & down .

eyes watching as the shirt comes out of the backpack , billy’s inching close , somewhat – just to ensure that he gets the chance to pat it against their wound . how they got it , however , is different . billy’s taking a deep breath , once again , concentrating on how they’re going to get any kind of traction , with their wound . calming down at this point , to relax – humming softly .

“ got into a fight , ” they’re letting out , finally speaking to the other , eyeing that he’s close to their wounded arm , extending it so he can get more traction – noting that their arm is shaking , trembling to its’ extend , where they’re letting out winces , whimpers – just as he’s covering their wound with the shirt , hoping that he wasn’t pressing into it harshly .

an   eyebrow   shoots   up   in   disbelief   as   lee   tries   not   to   get   distracted   as   he   works   at   bandaging   their   wound.   this   town   doesn’t   feel   like   the   type   where   you’d   get   stabbed   or   worse   if   you’re   out   walking   alone   at   night   ,   something   feels   amiss   here.   but   then   ,   who   is   he   to   judge?   

so   he   doesn’t   ask.

instead   ,   he   ties   off   the   fabric   of   the   make-shift   bandage.   it’s   not   pretty   --   his   hands   are   smeared   with   their   blood   and   it   has   stained   the   bandage   where   his   fingers   worked   at   securing   it   around   billy’s   arm.   but   it   will   do   for   the   time   being   ,   at   least   until   they   are   able   to   seek   out   real   medical   attention.

‘   do   you   need   a   ride   to   the   hospital   or   anything?   ’   he   offers   ,   still   crouched   beside   them   as   he   reaches   for   the   rest   of   the   shirt   to   wipe   his   hands   off   before   silently   offering   it   to   them.   it’s   clear   that   billy   is   in   pain   and   he   wants   to   help.   but   something   tells   him   this   isn’t   going   to   be   as   simple   as   dropping   them   off   at   the   emergency   room   doors.

billy’s letting out a simple sigh , a glance over at the other before chuckling softly . ’ do you think i’m a good person ? ’ & what does that mean ? billy’s quiet , trying to figure it out , trying to say the best things that didn’t sound . . the worst . billy doesn’t want to lie , no . they want to be as honest as they can be – looking at him , chewing down on their lower lip , fully concentrating on lee . sure , he might’ve had some issues , but it was nothing that could push billy away from him , none of it could . hell , if what they did wasn’t enough to push him away from them – then , it was nothing to worry about , right ? fiddling with their fingers , billy’s contemplating on the best wording they can give him .

“ i think you’re an exceptional person . is that enough ? ” they’re asking , once letting their words out , billy’s grinning softly , knowing in their heart & mind that they meant a lot more , however , not wanting to say too much or too little – for the sake of them not getting rejected , for allowing to pour their heart out – somewhat . & it seems so unconventional , yes , but billy . . cherishes their ’ whatever it is ’ to risk anything . & they may seem conflicted , confused , nonetheless , what they do know is that he’s just like them . there’s no escaping what they are , right ? killers . predators .

it takes billy a second to think about saying more , of course , curious as to what he’s going to say . & there’s no way that they’re going to stumble on their words , hence the deep breath . billy’s in tune with their thoughts , although , gaining this feeling in their stomach , as if they were going to vomit . billy thinks he’s exceptional . not good , but exceptional . something they’ve never told anyone , in fact . & deep down , billy’s worried , with their head thinking that he might take it into stride , might use it against them when he wants something . of course , billy’s cautious , knowing that there’s consequences for wanting to get close to someone , to gain their trust .

“ why do you ask , lee ? ” is what comes out , as they’re shifting into a different posture , so they can pay enough attention to him , if & when he says something , anything . truthfully , billy likes lee . a bit too much , however , it’s quite unspoken between the pair , seeing how billy’s concentrated on a million more other things than this – than their feelings , it seems .

lee   doesn’t   raise   his   gaze   ,   not   at   first.   he   doesn’t   want   to   look   billy   in   the   eyes   as   they   answer   him   because   he   thinks   he   knows   the   answer.   instead   ,   he   watches   his   hand   as   he   flips   the   plastic   lighter   between   his   long   fingers.   the   snake   tattoo   on   his   knuckles   looks   like   it’s   slithering   between   the   neon   yellow   of   the   lighter   and   his   hand.

but   the   dirt   under   his   nails   looks   too   much   like   dried   blood.   it   doesn’t   matter   how   many   times   he   scrubs   his   skin   until   it’s   an   angry   red   ,   because   moments   like   this   always   threaten   to   drag   him   under.   usually   he’s   alone   when   this   happens.   late   nights   can   be   the   hardest   when   he   can’t   sleep   due   to   the   guilt   digging   away   at   him.   except   there’s   something   about   billy   that   he   feels.   .   .safe   in   being   this   open   with   them.   is   it   because   they   understand   him?   because   they’re   like   him?

a   snort   escapes   him   at   billy’s   words   as   his   hand   stops   ,   fingers   gripping   the   lighter   against   his   palm.   there’s   a   ghost   of   a   smile   touching   his   lips   as   lee   quietly   repeats   the   word.   exceptional.   is   that   what   he   really   is?   eyes   finally   rise   to   meet   billy’s   gaze   ,   searching   the   other   for   any   sign   that   they   are   lying.   but   he   finds   nothing.

‘   it’s   just   a   feeling   i   get   sometimes.   ’   he   offers   ,   his   brow   knitting   together   thoughtfully.   ‘   i   can’t   help   what   i   am   ,   y’know?   ’   a   small   pause   as   he   gives   a   self-conscious   shrug   of   the   shoulder.   ‘   i   guess   i’ve   just   been   thinking   about   stuff   lately.   ’

he’s   not.   he   knows   he’s   not   wrong.   but   it’s   that   little   niggle   of   doubt   that   peter   has   planted   like   a   poisonous   seed   in   his   head   that   has   lee   almost   second   guessing   himself:   but   what   if.   .   .?

if   he   wasn’t   wrong   ,   then   what   about   his   ex   rachel?   (   she   was   in   a   nuthouse   because   of   him.   )   and   what   about   his   sister   kayla?   (   he   should   be   able   to   tell   her   what   he   was   ,   what   he   did   to   people.   .   .right?   )   maybe   he   wasn’t   as   good   as   he   pretended   to   be.   maybe.   .   .   --

lee’s   jaw   clenches   as   hazel   eyes   briefly   squeeze   shut.   he   can’t   spiral   now.   it’s   people   like   peter   that   the   boy   would   go   after.   people   who   deserve   it.

for a minute , billy’s vulnerable . they’re trying not to say anything , about how the blood is dripping down their arm – they’re quiet , nonetheless , still trying to wrap their head around the fact that he wants to help . their other hand is pressing right onto the wound , with soft sounds leaving their lips , heart racing out of their chest , eyes watching him .

“ you wanna help ? ” words etched out of their mouth , a sardonic chuckle slips out as they’re letting out a wince – slowly nodding their head . “ . . alright , do you have a bandage or anything ? ” question comes out , billy’s taking a glance at him , chewing down on their lower lip , contemplating their close words .

noticing his face – billy’s letting out this sigh , chest heaving up & down , wondering what he’s going to do , or what he’ll even do to help , in fact . they’re hesitant , though , they’re also in pain , needing something to cover their wound .

there’s   alarm   in   the   boy’s   eyes   as   his   brow   raises   in   concern.   hazel   eyes   search   the   other’s   face   for   an   answer   ,   but   all   he   finds   is   pain   and   what   he   assumes   is   annoyance.   a   voice   in   his   head   warns   that   he   should   just   walk   away;   this   isn’t   his   problem.   

but   he   can’t.

lee’s   gaze   immediately   drops   and   searches   the   other   before   seeing   what   billy   is   talking   about.   oh   shit.   he   pulls   the   strap   from   his   bag   over   his   head   and   drops   it   to   the   ground   ,   kneeling   beside   it.   the   bag   contains   everything   he   owns   as   well   as   a   few   useful   things   he’s   picked   up   along   the   way.   there’s   gotta   be   something   inside   he   can   use   ,   he   thinks.   fingers   fumble   for   the   zipper   as   he   yanks   it   open   and   digs   around   inside   ,   searching   for   anything   close   enough   to   a   bandage.   

lee   finds   an   old   shirt   crumbled   up   at   the   bottom   of   the   bag   and   yanks   it   free.   he’d   taken   it   from   the   last   house   he’d   squatted   in   and   it   looks   clean   enough.   it’s   gotta   be   better   than   nothing   ,   right?

‘   what   happened?   ’   he   asks   as   he   uses   his   teeth   to   tear   a   strip   of   cloth   from   the   shirt   and   kneels   close   to   their   bleeding   arm.   he’s   never   done   this   before   and   while   the   blood   doesn’t   bother   him   ,   he   still   tries   to   be   as   careful   as   possible   as   he   attempts   to   cover   their   wound.
