there is a tart tobacco smoke on the tongue, smelling of menthol. It's disgusting, but you've long been used to the presence of cancer rods in your life. they, like those very friends, accept your pain and help you lose extra weight.
you hear the door creak behind you, and heavy footsteps announced the approach of someone who often made you forget about sleep, a quiet life, and in general about many things.
“you're back,” you say on an exhale and put out a half—rotted cigarette in a cup of unfinished coffee.
“as always,” Simon replies, twining his arms around your waist, and his lips barely touch your bare shoulder.
“one day you may not come back,” you throw out thoughtless words, as if your soul has taken over your body in an attempt to speak out.
you feel his tension and blame yourself for the callousness that appeared out of nowhere. Riley is silent, and this only makes it morally worse.
“I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that,” you wave it off and walk away from the man, for some reason afraid to look at him; it doesn't matter that it's been a few months since he went on another assignment.
after all, he is none other than Simon “Ghost” Riley.
“I'm at home, y/n. Isn't that enough? he asks, standing in the very place where you recently gave your lungs to a seemingly fragile nicotine stick. right now, only your heart was fragile, promised to a man who gave himself to the army.
finally you look at him and immediately feel goosebumps running along your spine.
his eyes are solid steel; his eyelids are darkened from sleepless nights, and there is a fresh scratch on his cheek. the skin on the hands is dirty and untidy. this has probably always been the case.
“I'm glad you're here,” you swallow the insult and smile wearily, and then you approach Riley. he is much taller than you, so you stand on tiptoe to reach his lips with your lips.
he knows what you're really thinking and what you're worried about all the time that you're together; he knows what doesn't make you happy, but he can't let you go anymore.
the life of a ghost is an empty existence, and only with you it has ceased to be empty.
“remember that you are the one for whom I continue to fight,” Simon admits already in bed, feeling your breath on his neck, and running his fingers through soft hair.
you snuggle closer to the man and kiss his chin, noticing the smile that so fleetingly touched his dry lips.
“just don't leave me,” you whisper in the darkness of the night, as if you're giving away the most intimate secret.
“never,” you can hear his determination and confidence clearly; you don't doubt him, you just don't dare. And you just hope again that Simon will always be there for you.
