How Sensitive are You to Your Voice? Part 2 So, let's look at this question. Is Coffee Good for Singers or Not? There are certain foods and drinks you should avoid if you want to get the most out of your vocals. But what about coffee? Is good or bad for singers and vocal cords? Firstly, everyone reacts differently to stimulants and caffeine. So, if you know that drinking coffee doesn't affect your voice, then you are good. But if it does affect your voice, you might want to continue reading. Your vocal cords need water to stay hydrated. Water is also beneficial to improving the flexibility and efficiency of your vocal cords. Coffee works in the opposite way that water does and dehydrates your vocal cords. As the body needs water to lubricate the vocal cords, coffee decreases your body’s ability to absorb water, meaning your voice can sound hoarse. Coffee dehydrates the body – especially your vocal cords. With little moisture on the cords, this creates more tension between them which shortens your vocal range and limits your capabilities. The task of singing also becomes more difficult because your body has less moisture to lubricate the vocal cords. I know it might be hard for many of us to give up our coffee habits, so if you can’t quit, you should make sure to drink a lot of water with every cup to compensate for its dehydrating effect. Or better still, you might have to avoid it when you are preparing for your performance or rehearsals. I hope you find it helpful. Singers, how Sensitive are you to your Voice? I checked the Oxford Dictionary and it defines sensitivity as follows: The quality of being sensitive. The degree of response of an instrument to a change in an input signal. So, with these two definitions, we can clearly see that sensitivity is key to our VOCAL INSTRUMENT, the health of our voices and the success of our performances as Singers. As Singers, we need to be super sensitivity to the signal our voices give us. Sometimes, our diet- what we eat or drink can be detrimental to our voices and performance if care is not taken. I’m sure you’ve heard it said before that “you are what you eat,” but as a vocalist, you sing what you eat, too! There are certain foods to avoid before singing, ones that seem to have negative impact on singer’s voice more than others, including dairy, spicy, nuts, foods, fried foods, and anything particularly fatty. Not only can they increase phlegm in your throat, but they can also cause vocal cord inflammation. As I close, please, be sensitive to those uncomfortable signals in your voice whenever you eat or drink anything in particular that affects the quality of your voice or the way sound. Keeping your voice in shape isn't just about singing often—it's also about singing correctly. If you practice a song or a vocal exercise incorrectly, you will be repeating a bad habit that will soon become your second singing nature and takes longer to correct. So, make sure when you use your voice, you use it the right way. Follow these tips and you'll be right on track 1. Breathe the right way. Stop using your chest to inhale and start using your abdominal muscles, which is responsible for 70% of your breathing. Development a good breath control which will help you manage your breath well so you don't run out of air as you sing. 2. Always warm up your voice for 10 to 20 minutes before singing or practicing. 3. Avoid straining as you reach for higher notes. 4. Keep your neck and shoulders quiet and relaxed as you sing. 5. Listen to yourself. Record your practice sessions to make sure you are singing on key and to correct other vocal techniques such as diction and tone quality. 6. Check your diction as you sing, opening all vowel sounds, and completing consonants by slightly exaggerating the final consonant. Sing with expression and emotion. To convey the message of the song you must feel the emotion. 7. Use a smooth, gentle, tonal attack. Avoid scooping the tone or attacking the sound too harshly. 8. Concentrate on building your technique continually. This must be your primary focus. 9. Your choice of songs must be within your vocal range. Diaphragmatic Breathing Breathing is an essential building block for healthy vocal production. It may be a surprise, however, that breathing takes as much practice and fine-tuning as producing a nice, full sound. As a singer, you're more like an athlete. You need agility, dexterity, and above all, stamina. Breathing is the single most important element to sustain notes, colour, riffs, and get through a phrase without running out of breath. Instructions: You will need an area where you can lay out your mat. When you are lying down, you can really feel the breath moving through your body as it makes contact with the floor. 1. Lie down on your back with the eyes closed, relaxing your face and your body. You can keep the legs outstretched or bend your knees and bring the soles of your feet to your mat if that's more comfortable. If you bend your knees, let them rest against each other. 2. Begin to inhale and exhale deeply through the nose. 3. On each inhale, fill the belly up with your breath. Expand the belly with air like a balloon. 4. On each exhale, expel all the air out from the belly through your nose. 5. On the next inhale, fill the belly up with air. Then when the belly is full, draw in a little more breath and let that air expand into the rib cage causing the ribs to widen apart. 6. On the exhale, let the air go first from the rib cage, letting the ribs slide closer together, and then from the belly, drawing the navel back towards the spine. Physical exercise is not a substitute for technique or vocal practice. Don't consider vocalizing and singing a substitute for aerobic fitness exercises. Also, because singers appear on stage in dramatic productions, they need to be as physically fit and attractive as possible. A 5 Day Vocal Preparation for Singer 1. Drink eight to 10 glasses of water a day No kidding. Water moisturises the vocal folds and acts like a lubricant. It makes your voice flexible and resilient, and you’ll hit higher notes with more ease and clarity. 2. Gargle with warm saltwater For 30 seconds before every rehearsal, singing lesson, performance, and recording, gargle with warm saltwater. Even better, make a cup of Throat Coat tea and pour a bit into another cup, add some salt, and gargle with that! The salt moisturizes like no tomorrow and the Throat Coat diminishes any inflammation and gives an extra coating of moisture to the vocal cords. 3. Skip the dairy That means no milk, no cheese, and no yogurt! Dairy causes phlegm and interferes with singing. 4. Lay off the caffeine That means no coffee, black or green tea, Coca-Cola, chocolate, or hot chocolate. Caffeine in any form is dehydrating. 5. Stay away from foods that cause acid reflux, like sodas, alcohol, citrus fruits or juice, caffeine, chocolate, and peppermint tea or gum all cause acid reflux that burns the mucous membrane of the vocal cords. This may result in irritation and inflamed vocal cords, which translates into raspiness/hoarseness and a compromised vocal range. 6. Avoid spicy foods For some people, spicy foods can also cause acid reflux, which burns the vocal cords and leaves them dry. This will cause problems with high notes and shifting registers will be bumpy. Benefits of Water for Singers Of course, nothing beats water when it comes to dry vocal cords. Yet, you should also consider the type of water you would drink. You should not drink cold water. The most recommended water is that of room-temperature water. Warm water will not worsen the condition of your throat. Coldwater, on the other hand, may cause a sore throat. When you sing for a certain period, the veins of your vocal cords are over-extended, and you know what happens when veins are over-extended—they become hypersensitive. To soothe such hypersensitive throat, you should drink warm water. You can add a bit of lemon or mint onto your water to soothe your throat.
