An Introduction to Feirings
Feirings are a species of intelligent magical creatures that incorporate reptile, mammalian and insect-like features in their design. The name Feiring is composed of an alternate spelling of the word fae or fey, as in fairy, and the suffix -ling, meaning small or "little ones." In-universe, however, Feiring means "Our Kind,'' and this is the name the species uses to refer to themselves. The Feiring language (or feimiir) doesn't actually have plural forms for nouns, but the -s suffix is allowed as an anglicization of the name. Besides spoken language, they also use pheromones to communicate.
Feirings live in colonies, similar to those formed by ants or bees. They are therefore highly social beings, quick to solve quarrels and forgive those who wrong them, though the specific makeup of their characters varies from individual to individual. They are short, typically no taller than 1.3 meters, and have a diverse phenotype (within a set of guidelines) that allows them to better perform their function as members of the colony.
They are a primarily agricultural society, their main source of nourishment being a species of mushroom they farm deep in their burrows, but they will also forage for plant and animal matter. They are also great crafters, and some may even wear clothes, depending on the climate and their affinity for such objects.
There are three types of Feiring: The Feilaan, the Feikoo, and the Feilhei.
Feilaan are the most numerous, and this is of course reflected in their name, which means “Our Many.” They are more or less equivalent to worker ants, but it would be a mistake to think of them as subservient. Feiring society is mostly horizontally structured, with hierarchies, as humans think of them, playing a very minor role in their lives, if any.
The Feilaan are sexless, and lack the ability to reproduce. They are also genderless, but when interacting with humans and utilizing human languages, they might pick a set of nouns and pronouns to describe themselves in a way they are most comfortable with.
The Feikoo are slightly taller than the average Feilaan, usually topping at 1.40 meters tall. Feikoo can be very roughly translated as “Our Lords,” but this does not mean they are any more important than the Feilaan, or all male, in the way humans understand it. Indeed, just as the Feilaan, the Feikoo may use all sorts of gendered terms they fancy when interacting with humans.
It is the primary role of the Feikoo to fertilize eggs for the colony. This does not occur through sexual intercourse, but through an entirely different process that involves magic. The reproduction of this species results very alien to humans, and it is not yet fully understood by them.
Finally, the Feilhei, “Our Progenitors,” are the rarest type of Feiring. They are, as their name suggests, the progenitor of all members of the colony. The magical abilities of the Feilhei are truly beyond the understanding of even the Feiling themselves, and how exactly eggs come to be is a mystery to them still. The Feilhei do not speak, and they communicate uniquely by scent. They are also the tallest, growing up to 1.60 meters tall. Calling them Queens would be inaccurate, despite the similarities they have in role with queen ants. They are more akin to a personified protector spirit or a force of nature, something to be respected and cared for.
Many things can (and will) be said about Feirings, but these are, I think, the most important, and the ones that better work as an introduction to the species as a whole.
