I'm so happy you're doing this. I liked Hamlet so much, but my school butchered it with schedules and almost no in depth relatable discussion. Half of it flew right over my head. Thank GOD you exist, I want to learn more about Hamlet before Its Too Late!!
got any advice for someone who is going to study hamlet? :)
oh BOY do iÂ
(sidenote: guess who may or may not have—literally just today—registered for a class that’s more or less “Analyzing The Hell Out of Hamlet For an Entire Semester”, if you guessed me you’re right and i’m a parody of myself etc etc)
honestly, if you haven’t yet, i’d recommend reading hamlet first—as in, before you even study it in class. granted, this is just a Me Thing that i try to do for literally every book we read in my english classes so far, but i find that reading things first (and then rereading them when we’re actually studying them) increases my comprehension and enjoyment x10000; on the first read, you’re able to read for enjoyment, while the second read can be entirely devoted to analysis and all those fun nitpicky english major-y things. 10/10 would recommend this method, especially for shakespeare. howEVER i understand that many people just physically cannot do that because of time constraints/slow reading speed/what have you, so if that’s the case then disregard everything i just said.
anon, i don’t know how familiar you are with shakespeare’s language, but if you’re not super comfortable with it yet then i’d definitely recommend reading a version with footnotes or something. personally, i’d advise against “no fear shakespeare” because it reduces the text a lot and cuts out a ton of sex jokes. actually, even if you ARE fairly familiar with shakespeare, i’d still recommend getting a footnoted version—hamlet as a play might seem ~fairly~ straightforward on the first read, and for the most part i guess it is, but there’s a LOT of little subtleties in the text. hell, i have large pieces of the play memorized at this point, and i’m still finding new stuff.
“but katie, it’s a play. i don’t wanna READ it, i wanna SEE it!” fair enough. there’s always movie versions, too, and watching shakespeare’s often just as (if not more) rewarding as reading it, albeit in a different way. the first full-length version i saw was the gregory doran one starring david tennant, and honestly i think that’s a really good hamlet for beginners—for the most part, it’s a pretty straightforward adaptation of the text, but it’s also honestly entertaining/a lot of fun to watch, which is integral when you’re just starting out with hamlet and might be a little overwhelmed by all those soliloquies and whatnot. another film version i’d recommend (my personal favorite) is a made-for-tv movie starring campbell scott as hamlet. as a movie, it’s fairly shitty (blame the hallmark channel’s low budget); as a hamlet, i think it’s absolutely wonderful. favorite film hamlet, favorite film gertrude, really interesting interpretations on ophelia and polonius, super cool blood motif recurring throughout. another version that a lot of people on here tend to stan is hamlet at elsinore, starring pre-the sound of music christopher plummer. it’s black and white, so for some people that’s a turnoff, but it’s got an incredibly solid hamlet/horatio relationship (young michael caine is horatio!), my favorite claudius, and their osric is my fave osric by a mile (though he’s a minor character so that doesn’t matter much). in all honesty though, i do think the david tennant one is probably the most ~accessible~ for newcomers. there’s lotsa other hamlets i didn’t mention here, but i personally wouldn’t look into any of those for your first ever hamlet viewing.Â
in terms of characters: um, i guess—just keep in mind the humanity of it all, y’know? like, hamlet gets stereotyped as this emo long-winded guy so often, but there’s real depth and pain and surprising relatability there, so i guess just keep that in mind as you’re reading.
also: horatio. please notice horatio. my teacher senior year barely touched on horatio, and it made me very sad because i really do think he’s integral to the play—in a subtle way, yes, but hamlet would not be hamlet without horatio to keep the play grounded. lots of people ship hamlet/horatio—i’ll leave you to come up with your own opinion on that one, anon, but just—please take horatio into account, thank you friend.
(and i hope whoever’s teaching your class is good—because like it or not, that’s often another super integral factor in your enjoyment of a work. if not, then come to my askbox and i will write hamlet rants for you in lieu of actually coming to your school/university and shouting at the instructor)
finally—and this is also just a Me Thing as well, but as dumb as it sounds, it’s often integral to my enjoyment of a work—have fun with it! go through the hamlet tag on tumblr, read some hamlet/horatio fic, make your own dreamcast, whatever—in other words, treat hamlet like it’s something you’d read for fun. doing stuff like that often helps me to enjoy the books i’m reading in class because it makes them feel more like something i genuinely can get into as opposed to just another piece of homework.
yayyy for hamlet, i hope you like it!! :)

GUYS
I was looking at the ANTI Merch and it has a time limit.
What if that is how much time we have left to save Jack? 14 days?
What if on August 17 or 18 Anti fully takes over, and we have to stop him before then?

I just had a family photo moment.
Lemme tell ya.
In the play Im in, our last scene has us all gathered around this girl (cuz were all a family) and we have to have kinda a group hug type thing, except some people were really uncomfortable hugging people they barely knew. So the director had me hug the main girl we're all around (cuz Im her “mother) my "husband” putting his hand on my back, and everyone else sitting around her.
My thoughts:
50% “Awww, this is cute, were like a cute little family!”
And 50% “Wait, why did I think that?”
