hey I want to applaud your work in research! My first thought when it came to "marks" was either a water clock or a candle with notches next to it. Thanks for clearing that up! (also I've never played FE10 but i was so curious to see)

Thanks!The word for "mark (time)", 刻, also means "a scratch" so its etymology probably does have to do with ancient timekeeping methods with water or candles or something. For whatever reason, the etymology of similar English time words doesn't seem to have such origins.

For reference, here's the original line in Leo/Elise B:

It unambiguously says that there have been instances where the children of concubines on bad terms killed each other.

So from what i've seen its known that xander and camilla killed other half siblings when they were younger? But i couldn't see that very clearly from the supports so I was wondering if you could explain it?

Leon and Elise talk about it…huh, I didn’t notice before, but it seems they made that more ambiguous in the localization.

Japanese:

Leon: He was the country’s king, so it was natural. Because he had such a charming disposition. But because of that, the women Father favoured had violent quarrels. I heard stories about the children of concubines on bad terms killing each other.Elise: That's….! Even though they were siblings?!Leon: Well, it can’t be helped. To raise their own status, there were a lot of concubines who used their own children.

Translation’s a little clunky, but it’s serviceable. 子ども同士 is unambiguously referring to the children of the concubines, at any rate. 子ども is not arguable.

The localization makes this more ambiguous by simply saying “family”, which could be the siblings or parents of the concubines themselves. However, that makes the A-rank not make sense–Elise is fearful that she’ll have to fight her siblings because they have different mothers, not because of lust for Garon. Look at how this flows:

[Speaking:]エリーゼ[Portrait:]怒2,I was just thinking about your story theother day.▾You said Father’s suitors fought with theirown family members…▾

Okay, so, the culprits were explicitly the women fighting with their own families over Garon’s dick–

Couldn’t the same thing happen to us?We have different mothers, after all…▾

If the problem in the first half of the line is ultimately Garon’s dick, why is she worried?

In the Japanese, she worries about being pitted against one another as the half-siblings were before.

Elise: I thought about it before, when I heard that story from Leon-oniichan. If we would always remain like this. Because me and Leon-oniichan were born to different mothers…

So…I suppose that’s why you were confused. The localization rewrote the concubine wars, but the plot of the Japanese version of the game is still widely known because of the fan translation and its influences persist.

One could still make the inference that because Marx and Camilla are still alive, they had to remain so by defending themselves against other half-sibs making a bid for power, but–

Actually, hold on a moment. There are no long any references to other children of Garon in Leo/Elise at all. Were the half-siblings cut from the localization entirely…?

In Harold/Arthur x Aqua/Azura c-supports does he actually say around 10 years? Or does he have a much broader time frame? If he does say around 10 years ago, wouldn't that make Elise younger than (around) 10?

Thoughts on Nyx's supports with the Avatar

I’ve been sitting on this ask for a while and I’m not quite sure what you’re looking for…? The original never really struck me as anything special–it’s not a bad support, but Nyx has better ones. It doesn’t deal with her guilt much.

Huh, looking at the localized support, there’s actually a few interesting tweaks. (of course, there’s a line added to Kamui assessment of her stressing that she looks like she’s in her adolescence, hahaha) There’s a bit of weird phrasing in “crow’s feet beneath her eyes”–I’ve only ever heard crow’s feet as referring to the corners of someone’s eyes. I wonder if that’s a regional thing?

But this bit…

I showed a gift for magic at a young age. I was known by many as a prodigy. Such was my downfall. I became carried away in my inexperience and lost control of my magic. It backfired, and I have been stuck in this form since.

This is…a bizarre description of what happened…she’s quite clear that she killed a lot of people in the Japanese.

I displayed incredible magical potential from a young age, and I was considered a genius by those around me. … However, that could not last. I got carried away and went on a rampage.

Wait, this too…

Because I respect you, Orochi, I’ll confide a bit of my history. When I was younger, I came into my powers of sorcery. But I was too powerful. Too young. Too immature. One day, I attempted a spell that a sorceress should attempt only late in life. I won’t say whether it went right or wrong. Only that it froze my age.

This localized dialog puts the entirety of the blame on Nyx overestimating her abilities and casting a spell that was too powerful for her. While the original dialog didn’t explicitly bring up her murders, it was phrased in such a way as to imply it.

When I was younger, my talents for incantations surpassed all….Back then, I overestimated that power of mine. And I used too much of such magics in sport. To compensate for such a strong curse, my body stopped growing…

This is a little awkwardly worded, but 遊び半分 is like “halfway playing around” or “screwing around”, something like that. Its usage is contrasted against duty/responsibility–Nyx was not taking her power seriously and using it for her own entertainment instead. She does say that she had overestimated her power, but it’s not the focus of the reason why she’s cursed–it’s just the reason why she treated her power like a game.

Basically, the original line didn’t specify that she was a murderer, but was worded in such a way that her killings fitted neatly into the explanation she gave. The explanation localized Nyx gives localized Orochi puts the reason why she was cursed as something totally different and doesn’t really allow for her killings–it puts the blame as simply casting something too powerful.

The bizarre thing is, the references to her killings are accurately kept in OTHER supports.

(Jacob) When I was younger, I did many evil, vile things. I earned the title of monster. As punishment for my horrible actions, I was cursed with this form for all my life.

(Niles) I heard rumors about you long ago, when I was a kid. The girl who grew up as a prodigy in the dark arts… She wove wicked spells without a thought and brought suffering to all she met. But one day she went too far and paid a terrible price.

(Keaton) I ended the lives of many innocents. Until one day, I cast a certain spell that took its toll on me…I found myself frozen in this state, never to age another day.

These lines are very consistent with Japanese Nyx. But in general, it looks like localized Nyx’s past has been downplayed as a total accident in several other places.

(Silas) My failure to control the magics I wielded resulted in many innocent deaths.

(Hayato) A long time ago, I cast a very strange spell. Because of that mistake, my body stopped growing. That’s why I appear so young.

(Arthur) Many years ago, a magical experiment went wrong, preventing me from aging further.

(Kamui) I became carried away in my inexperience and lost control of my magic. It backfired, and I have been stuck in this form since.

When she talks about why she’s cursed in the Japanese, she often says her curse is because of 代償. Reparation/compensation/etc–it keeps her guilt at the forefront of her speaking of it. Even others speak of her like this (Odin: “As compensation for her curse, she is one with a young body that will not grow…”). In several places, the English attempts to explain the circumstances of her curse in a more literal manner instead–the Orochi support specifies it was a because the spell was for more advanced casters, the Odin support says that the spell stole the lives of a village’s worth of people and gave them to her. 

It’s technically a more sensible explanation, but it removes Nyx’s own feelings of guilt and her own knowledge that she committed terrible wrongs from the explanation.

The more I look at it, the more it looks like to me that the localized translations were done piecemeal. There are times Nyx is fairly mild about it when she talks to some people, like Harold–she only tells him that she was screwing around/being irresponsible. It’s a mild explanation, but it still focuses on her own guilt for what she did, not “an experiment that went wrong”, which could be absolutely anyone’s fault.

It looks like the localizer saw 遊びすぎて, didn’t have any context for it, and outright guessed that “playing around” meant “some kind of experiment” rather than Nyx bitterly referring to her crimes with a childish word. Japanese Nyx says that she rampaged and slaughtered without guilt in other supports–in that context, it’s blindingly obvious that “playing around” is her being scornful of her childish self. The localizer does not appear to have read or referenced any other supports.

In conclusion, it looks like Nyx’s past was translated faithfully only when she was completely unambiguous in Japanese; when she was even a little indirect about it, the localizers made up implications or explanations that ranged from “technically true but focused on the wrong thing” (ie, she does mention her own arrogance several times in the Japanese, but it was the arrogance that led to the crime, not the arrogance, period, being at fault) to “complete fanfiction”.

It also has the side effect of making localized Nyx seem quite selfish–she complains first and foremost of her own body, not her guilt at being a murderer.

So what’s with the pickles? Hisame in the original Japanese vs the localization

Treehouse/localization Hisame quickly became famous for his quirky love of pickles. It made him popular with some, but also gave many others yet another reason to criticize the localization for making changes to the original. It’s pretty obvious he was changed from the Japanese, even to those who don’t know much about the Japanese version.

Note that the word rendered here as "udders" is literally "breast" in contexts of milk production and can be used for human breasts (in fact, google image search results are filled with breastfeeding for the word), so I think this is even more suggestive, like:

Look, it's milk. When you squeeze her nipples, the cow cries "moo moo" in pleasure...

honestly some of the characters quotes for giving you milk are hilarious, but i was so disappointed by niles. you’d think mr. innuendo himself would have something great to say about milk, but no it’s just:

Localisation Change & Oversight (?) Lazlow(Inigo)/Selena(Severa) Support Convo

In Fire Emblem Awakening, we were introduced to Inigo and Severa, a young man and young woman who are among the child-generation characters.

To start off, the Japanese words for “bracelet” and “ring” do look very similar. “Bracelet” is 腕輪 (udewa) and “ring” is 指輪 (yubiwa). They both end with 輪, which just adds to confusion!

Anyway, in the English version of the game, Inigo buys a ring for Severa, as an accessory to help add to her cuteness.

Severa rejects the ring, but asks for it in their S support convo, where it becomes a symbol of their feelings for each other.

But in the Japanese version of the game, it isn’t a ring that he tried to give her, but a bracelet! 

Inigo: “Yeah, for now, take this. It’s a bracelet (腕輪) that I think would suit you well.”

So, for whatever reason, the bracelet was changed to a ring in the English version. No biggie. 

Fast forward a few years, to the setting of Fates. Inigo and Severa are now living in Nohr, under the names Laslow and Selena. The timelime assumes that Inigo and Severa never reached S support, so Inigo has held on to the item of jewellery. And…that’s where the problem lies. 

The Japanese version makes it pretty clear that the bracelet Laslow gives to Selena in their S event is the same one that he tried to give her in their Awakening A support. 

Laslow: “I’ve got this bracelet, but… Won’t you accept it?”

Selena: “!! B-bracelet… That’s…”

Laslow: “I ended up taking good care of it all this time, so that I could give it to you someday.”

It’s definitely the same bracelet! Since they changed it to a ring in the English version of Awakening, you’d expect that it would be a ring in the English version of Fates, but the localisation team for Fates must have forgotten about the change, wasn’t aware of it, or didn’t realise it was supposed to be the same item of jewellery…

Uhm…oops? The ring has morphed into a bracelet, yet it’s obvious that Selena recognises it. It’s not a major, game-breaking oversight, just one that tickled me when I first saw their English S support event!
