Sometimes I think about when Mel was first born. Did Ambessa hold her tenderly? Did she kiss her forehead and cup her small face in her hand, dwarfed by her own callouses as she saw her daughter for the first time? Small eyes, the exact same as her own. Did she let Kino hold Mel at her instruction, rearranging his hands to support her head.

Did Ambessa strap Mel to her chest as she walked around, walking slow so she wouldn't disturb her sleeping baby? Did she hold Mel at night, small fingers curved around her own, and smile? Did she smile back when Mel grinned at her for the first time? Did she encourage Mel as she walked for the first time, on her knees as Mel toddled towards her, hands out to catch her baby?
