I read the post and I think this person said it amazingly. The point about the fans stepping into the place of Simon Cowell shook me to the core. Whether you're just a louie or a oned fan, you definitely know how Simon's actions affected not just Louis but all of them. And I just want to say that, please dont repeat the history. Dont impose your idea of life on him. There is a very thin line between good fans and toxic fans and rn we're severely leaning towards the later. A friend recently mentioned that the fans nowadays are acting like "megafans" From aaod, you'll know if you're a 1d fan, and it's sad that that's what has happened to us. We still have time to redeem ourselves. Please remember that he's also a human being. Let's love Louis for what he is and let's love him for his art and whatever subfandom you belong to is fine as long as you all are civil. We are here for Louis and that should be our primary objective. And if you don't agree with what he is doing, you can feel free to unstan, it's fine. As for the people who are confused as to why Louis would do something, I would suggest patience. He never does something without a reason and let's have some faith in him.

If at all you feel overwhelmed with the state of the fandom rn, just remember that it's ok to take a break. It's not a wrong thing, first and foremost prioritize your mental health. This is supposed to be a happy fun thing and it's ok to take a break if it's not giving you happiness. You're no less of a fan for prioritizing yourself ❤❤❤

the things we do for love.

“i only criticize because i care.”

thats something a part and parcel of Louis' fandom from every side these days. every scathing critique and judgement is prefaced with this flowery faux emotional appeal.

“but I love him enough to care”

you probably believe that. and maybe some of it’s true. but it’s worth asking what exactly are you caring for? his wellbeing? his artistic autonomy? or his public image? his happiness? his success? or your idea of his success?

“i only want the best for him.”

but whose definition of “best” are we working with? his, or yours? what does it mean to want "best" for someone whose life you don’t live, whose inner world you don’t inhabit?

is it still "love" and “care” when it morphs into constant blame of "he should've released a single now." “he’s sabotaging himself.” “he should promote more.” “he’s making the wrong choices.” "he picked the wrong single." "he's picked the wrong setlist." "he picks the wrong venues" "he's complacent." "he should do other genres."

what happens when “the best” doesn’t come in the form of a scoreboard that capitalism handed you to measure worth i.e. awards, streams, charts, virality, clout, pr friendships, interviews, nominations? do you lash out? not at the industry, but at him. to find the fault in his work ethic. his habits. his decisions. his audacity to not perform ambition the way you want it?

maybe the blame shifts inward, not because it’s rational, but because the alternative is too painful or incomprehensible: that he might be doing everything right and still losing ground because the game is rigged. or maybe its that he did not meet the expectations you set for him so you could bask in reflected glory?

but i think when your expectations override his agency, you stop treating him like a person. you start treating him like a product. a character in a story you want to control. how is this any different from the the industry that wanted to push him into a mold that felt useful to them? to sing in genres and accents that they wanted?

if at some point you admired Louis for his resilience, his steadfast belief in what he wants, his drive, his bravery to stand up for what's right even at great personal cost, his refusal to play by someone else’s script, then how did you turn that into holding the same things against him? into not letting him do what he wants without relentless abuse? into wanting him to play by the script you wrote? when did you decide to get into the puppetmaster seats vacated by the likes of Simon Cowell?

none of this is about 'caring' about him. because in my opinion, real care isn’t coercive. it doesn’t punish. and for what? because you don't like some other fans in online spaces? so you want control over his art, that he created, that means something to him, that was his way of reclaiming his power in extremely difficult times. and you want to take away the choice from him to finally sing his own words. for what? to spite the fans?? or maybe its some other fandom or politics related thing that you want validated through louis' choices? what is this support that shouts over his autonomy with “i know better.” how is this not entitlement in disguise?

it’s not just that you feel hurt or disappointed; it’s that you believe your hurt matters more than Louis' autonomy. you think your wants should be the Louis’ compass. “i stood by you, so why aren’t you thriving the way I imagined?” becomes the (un)spoken question. you've internalized the illusion that "loving" someone means you get a say in their choices. that your time, your defense, your stanning should be repaid with external success you can point to and say, "see, he did what i wanted, i bet on the right horse."

the worst part is he’s not failing. he's grown. he's growing as an artist, on his own pace, in his own time. he’s navigating a blacklisted, hostile industry, doing what he can with as much freedom and artistic integrity as he can. and he’s choosing paths you might not understand immediately. that doesn’t make him ungrateful. or lazy. or wrong. it just makes him a human being making his own calls.

if you really care, step back. examine what you’re projecting. ask if your frustration is about him, or about what you need from him. because from where im standing, what you’re calling care is conditional, controlling, and cruel.

you don’t get to annotate someone else's becoming. he’s not a strategy. he’s not a character arc. his art, his choices, his pace, his joy aren’t negotiable. real care means accepting that success looks different when it’s his definition, not yours. support isn’t shouting the loudest about what he should do. it’s standing by while he figures it out. by giving him space to be human.

support is presence, without possession, without pressure.

if you love him, love him enough to let him lead. love him enough to let go of the version of him that only exists to validate you.

because love, actual love isn’t about winning. it’s about witnessing. letting someone live, even when the story doesn’t follow your script.

my thoughts on this subject came from a whirlwind of many, many ideas and things I've read recently. But these are the ones I felt worth sharing.

I’ve heard a lot of disparaging commentary on Louis' character and professionalism, but Louis is Brave.

I was thinking of Van Gogh, and Emily Dickinson, and Franz Kafka, and Vermeer, and Alan Turing, and Ludwig Boltzmann and Gregor Mendel. of how one's art and work is worthy, and true, and meaningful, and impactful, even if validation comes later. or never.

the righteous mind by jonahtan haidt “Morality binds and blinds.” In my interpretation of this in current context, "fans" feel like they're moral tribes with grand ideas about what Louis deserves, what loyalty means, how success should look.… but that morality also blinds you to nuance, context, and the actual humanity of the person you claim to support.

 coercive control by  evan stark this one's a direct quote. “the illusion of care is a central mechanism in coercive control, enabling abusers to exert power under the guise of love or protection. this rhetorical strategy complicates victims’ recognition of abuse because the controlling actions are framed as concern rather than domination.”

Iris Murdoch "Art and morals are… one. Their essence is the same. The essence of both of them is love. Love is the perception of individuals. Love is the extremely difficult realisation that something other than oneself is real. 

The enemies of art and of morals, the enemies that is of love, are the same: social convention and neurosis. One may fail.. to see the individual because we are completely enclosed in a fantasy world of our own into which we try to draw things from outside, not grasping their reality and independence, making them into dream objects of our own. "

this last one's a bit more philosophical, but not any less meaningful, i dont think. it might be the most poignant thing in the world actually.

Ok if you are a Louis Tomlinson fan listen to this. It doesn't matter whether you are a larrie or an anti Or an ot5, Our common ground is that we like Louis and his music. Why has it been so long since anyone remembered that? I've seen so many people hate on Louis for his decisions in his private life, and they call themselves a fan. This is not directed towards larries alone because I've seen the antis behave like this when he liked a Larry reel. Our fandom used to do stuff like promoting his album when his team doesn't, we used to do stuff TOGETHER to show that we love him. Now we are hating him? The fandom is losing its plot and I remember very well what happened the last time "fans" Hated on one of the boys. I'm not asking any of you to convert or abandon whatever you believe, I'm just asking you to remember that we love him for his music. The other matters are just add-ons. That man literally wrote "The greatest" For us and lately we are not working like a team. Please, if you really love Louis, drop this fight and go stream his music.
