There is exactly seven thousand steps from my house to the old oak.

If I walk the right pace, at least.

Ellis rarely says anything when it comes to my pace, but she thinks loud enough. And because she thinks, the trees hear her. And because I hear the trees, I hear what Ellis is thinking.

There is a run down and overgrown temple of Menphina on the way. I used to hide there when I was younger. They say it is an old altar of Nophica, but I know the truth. The lilies whispered it to me.

When the world was still new and before Gelmorra came to be, the people there worshipped a woman akin to a spirit, the moon, and most of the aspects that came with it: innate femininity, water, sexuality, as well as darkness and the security it brings.

When Gridania was founded, the old altar was found again, and in a patriotic effort (as well as a feat of idle carelessness) the feminine figure distinguished amidst the rubble was attributed to Nophica. Menphina was not as popular then, attributed to poachers the city wanted nothing to do with.

I thought we had much in common, that figure and I.

I thought that very thought to be arrogant, too, blasphemy, even. And then I remembered our gods did not live in idols, and I felt a little better.

Considered a guardian of earth thriving on sunlight as most flowers do, when in reality growth was found in the dank and the damp;

Remembered when convenient, forgotten when convenient, never aptly named nor understood;

Worshipped as herald and receptacle of care in generosity, rejected as instrument of jealousy even in defense.

I talked to the defaced idol as I would a friendly elder.

No, that's a lie. I pretended to address it as I would a friendly elder, when in truth I was talking to myself without admitting it. I tended to the plants surrounding the old steps because I was too cowardly to tend to the self, in turn. I thought that in gratitude, she would make me feel better, or impart life-changing wisdom.

I would later realize that it was the first time I did something selfishly without harming the people around me. Without harming the self.

I did not like it.

It made me feel different in a way I did not like. Ellis doesn't say I have a problem with change, but she thinks it without knowing. I know because I hear the trees and they hear Ellis. She knows how I am without roots.

And I feel most uprooted when I feel release without violence.

Without violence, I feel like I am closer to perfection, in a way that only man can achieve; by way of culture. Closer to perfection, through Gridania's idea of servitude.

To tend to nature and the self in glee. Forgetting that we first tended to it in fear and reverence.

I do not like glee. Glee is a numb, unintelligent feeling. It makes me numb. It makes me unintelligent.

It is not good to be numb, when you're me. I still feel what is happening, I do. I simply can't respond to it.

I become a plaything, that way. For other men. I'd much rather be a tool of the Gods. I can not experience Glee. It makes me numb.

I don't go to the old altar anymore.

Just wanted to say I had a ton of fun (and Rev a ton of character development) at the Oschon's Sands event last night, and wanted to thank you guys for running it! Will definitely be keeping an eye out for more events from you guys in the future.

It was a ton of fun, really well planned to avoid chat scroll, and all of your staff did a really great job personalizing things despite the amount of people.
