I love how, during the Rink o’ Mania fight, when the fight is centered around El (with the underlying issue being subtext) the camera stays at a mid shot.

At first, when the argument starts and is, on its surface level, the most about El the argument will be, there are a bunch of people between them and the camera.

It's like a visual representation of the disconnect in their conversation, as well as a visual representation of how Mike is veiling his discontent behind El. On the surface, his words are about El, but once we dig deeper (once we get past the dozens of people cluttering the frame) we see that, at the core of it, the issue is this: Will not talking to him.

"You should have told me." / "...for like a year and you didn't tell me."

And once those layers start to peel back and Mike's true frustrations become more apparent, the angle shifts and people stop covering the frame (except a couple times, notably when Will brings up El again).

Mike betrays how closely he's been watching Will all day, but because both of them are still trying to frame the issue around El, the scene stays a wide shot, keeping distance between them and the audience, as well as keeping their facial expressions a bit more obscure. They're getting closer to the core issue (their own relationship and miscommunication) but they're both still keeping their distance.

Until Will stops hiding behind the veil and directly calls it out, prompting the first close-up shot of the scene.

Once they start talking about their relationship, the scene immediately becomes more intimate. We see their expressions clearly, we see their eyes clearly (eyes are the window to the soul, after all, and one of an actor's best weapons), and we also get to appreciate that stunning blue/yellow lighting on their faces.

And it stays like this for the rest of their argument. They don't cut to a mid or wide shot until Mike walks away.

Visually, this proves that the most important part of this fight is their relationship—not just to them, but it’s intended to be seen as the most important by the viewer as well. The camera getting so close and intimate shows that this is how Mike and Will are feeling once the veil is lifted and they’re openly talking about their relationship: they’re feeling exposed, more personal, more intently focused on each other. And these close-ups are essentially flags being waved at the viewer, telling them,

��Look! This is important! Pay attention! We want you to care about this!”
