At Fable Candles we are genuine candle lovers and have dedicated all of our time to find the most suitable recipe, ensuring that the quality of soy wax matches the quality of the scent and comes in the perfect amount and package. It took us a while to get the courage to upload the first version of our product, but the constant positive feedback has made it so much easier for us along the way. Each candle is crafted with a lot of passion poured right here in the United Kingdom we even design and print the labels ourselves. Without bragging too much, you get the idea, but we want you to know that you matter to us and we do it all for you.

Soy wax burns nice and clean, thus it is eco-friendly and you can even wash and reuse the jar afterwards. Fable Candles burn for up to 40 hours and to make sure that you enjoy as much time as possible with your candle we have put together a brief guideline on how to care for your tiny new friend.

1. First date with your candle

When you first light your candle it is important to allow it to burn for 2-4 hours to ensure that the wax melts across the entire surface of the jar. This creates an even burn while preventing ‘tunnelling’ and prolonging the ‘life’ of the candle so you can enjoy more time together.

2. Trim, trim, trim

Before each burn, the wick should be trimmed ever so slightly (5mm) for a steady flame and to further promote the even burn previously mentioned. Have you ever seen the ‘mushroom’ shape that forms at the end of the candle wick after burning? Well, this comes as a result of carbon build-up which makes the flame consume more wax then it can burn. If the wick is too large for the candle you’ll get the not so pleasant effect of ‘mushrooming’ and that will consequently reduce the life expectancy of your candle. Trim, trim, trim the wick to prevent this.

3. Not all at once

Candles should never burn more than four hours at a time but this depends on the size of the jar as well. For example, while Fable Candles burn up to 40 hours we strongly recommend that you do not exceed the time previously mentioned. Candles should burn one hour for every 1 inch in diameter of the actual size. But to make it easier here’s a candle burning time calculator. 

4. Do not blow out

Repeat after us: ‘thou shall not blow out’

We know it sounds tempting and it is probably the most convenient way to extinguish a candle, but please, have mercy and save yourself for inhaling the smoke after you’ve enjoyed such a lovely scent. The hot wax can immediately put out the flame without emitting any smoke so you could dip the wick into the melted wax and strengthen the wick afterwards. Alternatively, there is always the ‘fancy-pants’ option to use a snuffer, but if that’s not accessible the Fable Candles jars come with a lid which you can easily place on top and, voila.

5. Let it chill

After extinguishing the candle, please allow it to cool for at least 5 hours before trimming the wick and burn it again. And for the safety sake, always remember that you are ‘playing with fire’ so be mindful of the surroundings, burn the candle away from fans, air conditioners open windows or heavily trafficked areas where people are walking.

What’s all the fuss about Soy Candles?

We absolutely love candles, especially homemade ones and spend so much time in finding the right formula for your health, mood and environment. Before we started, however, we did not know too much about eco candles in general or different types of wax, we only knew that the candles we’re having around the house would feel rather toxic if burned for a long time. Since we were burning candles on a daily basis, it no longer felt right to inhale so many chemicals so we decided to look into it. In case you were wondering, most of the retail candles are made from paraffin wax which is a petroleum by-product made of crude oil that is refined into gasoline. Already sounds scary? Keep reading. Paraffin wax is extremely cost-effective, creating the perfect medium for-profit development and massive production. This is also attractive to customers since the finite product (candle) costs so much less than healthier types. However, the side effects of it should make you think twice before compromising your health for a better deal. Here are 4 reasons that made us give up toxic products in favour of handmade, eco-friendly alternatives:

1. No toxins, carcinogens or other products you cannot pronounce!

Soy candles are less likely to trigger allergies because of their clean burning without toxins such as benzene, toluene or other petroleum products. Basically, the toxins released from paraffin candles are same as those found in diesel fuel, so we doubt you'd like to inhale any of that.

2. Soy candles last so much longer!

Believe it or not, soy candles last 30%-40% longer than the regular candles because soy wax has a lower melting point which means that you can enjoy your favourite scent for longer.
