Appreciate
After a good consultation with lecturer outside the module, I decided to go back to my very first idea. Which is appreciating people act towards us. I do some face to face to face survey, with a very simple questions. Knowing asking what their nationality are and ask them about Singaporean. I asked some of my friends, whether they’re Singaporean, Indonesian or Malaysian they answer that Singaporean is kiasu (don’t want to lose), individualistic, and hard-worker. Some say that half of the Singaporean are either very nice person or a very mean. Some differentiate it by age range, said that the older people are more strict and meaner and the young Singaporean either they’re very diligent or very lazy.
I do some observation (field study) at school (almost every day) about them saying thank you if someone opens the door for them or hold the lift for them. I barely heard them saying thank you. The only time they saying thank you is when they with their close friends, but not with strangers. It’s either they shy or uncomfortable.
(visual anthropology) I remember I saw a few post on Sg gag, saying thank you to a person through social media. Appreciate people through social media mostly, like pictures below
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Through some of the picture above, I started to wonder if they get any reward o get anything said there ( winnig toto ticket / medal) after a word of thank you, where I believe they deserve it.

Be Happy (updated)
For graduation project, my aim is to make people who see my drawing feels happy. It can create a mutual happiness because I create it happily. Currently, I'm lost thinking about the reason/ the problem that can support why I create this. When i show my style of drawing, people find it makes them feels happy.
I do some discussion with a group of my friend who didn’t know about my project before. Their opinion let me think if I'm at the right direction and where am I now. I started by asking what makes them happy, and the answer they give me right away are joke and humor which it too much for what kind of happiness I aim for.
From talking about life in Junior College (about cheering up students) -> knowing why people feeling unhappy -> facing adulthood (running from adulthood to childhood or showing adulthood is fun) -> to people who enjoy drawing but think they don't have the skill and somehow discourage.
Reminder: - One of them (people who I discuss with) said to me that I need to have a message in my drawing/poster. - Wanie comments on use environment to support my drawing can be a very helpful way.

Survey
1st survey (online)
Questions asked: 1. Gender
2. Age
3. How do you feel today?
4. If someone sitting down and the person give you this (picture below) while you're standing up in public transportation. How would you feel?
5. If someone standing and the person give you this (picture below) while you're standing up in public transportation. How would you feel?
6. If you answer weird / will no accept in any of the question above, why?
7. What form you prefer it to be?
8. What makes your day brighter after a long day of work / school?
9. What kind of appreciation / encouragement would you like to receive? (ex: good luck in exam. ps: please give as many as you can)
With a total of 31 persons responded to the survey, The data i get following with the survey question is: 1. More female answering the survey i give.
2. With differences of 1 person, more people age 21- 30 join the survey.
3. Happy and okay are most answered for the feelings of the day with 22.6% following with stress and calm with 16.1%
4. Mostly answered they feel Weird, followed by Okay and Touched
5.  With the scenario where the person is standing, i get better reaction than previous questions. which is Okay followed with touched. More people feel Happy and Encouraged compared with previous scenario.
6. Mostly respond to the question number 4 with various answers like: “ Because the person give the picture. Not a seat “ “ Weird on the first question, because i could perceive it as a sarcasm, as the person who gave me that picture is sitting down, instead of giving me a seat” Mostly answered with similar reaction where they feeling weird and giving out a thing instead of a seat.
7. Question is for the come out which form they prefer see the encouragement/ appreciation. Most answered question is Stickers -> Poster -> Badge, some answered food and some doesn’t agree with any form because the he/she think it won’t affect him/her.
8. Mostly answered: hang out with friends, eat, alone time, sleep.
9. From this question i can get more ideas on what kind of appreciation/ encouragement they would like to receive. The answers are: Good luck, You can do it, Everything will be okay, You’re beautiful / i like your clothes, etc
Conclusion: I believe most people feeling weird receiving things from a stranger because it’s not normally done and people start to feel suspicious. Surely people still need encouragement and appreciation even though they feel happy or just okay. Still need to be cautious on how i give things to people, that would turn 180 degree from my good intention to be seen as insulting.

Step 3: Testing
Due to idea changes from parenting on millennials to act of kindness because i find that happiness fits me more. My graduation project it’s about kindness for happiness. Act of kindness can make someone’s day, and mutual happiness can be achieved. it’s a campaign with Singapore Kindness Movement that targeted to young people approximately age 16 to 35 years old. The campaign will be accompanied by items to give out, which says the complimentary.
Explain the kind of research that can be used
An interview method will be used to know on how people will react towards the complimentary given and how people see the act of kindness itself as positive or negative.
So far i don’t think focus group discussion can be use for this project. From my experience having a focus group discussion, the information gathered will be more richer. If focus group discussion can be held i think it would be very useful.
Iterative Design is useful for this project because i’m giving out products that accompany the campaign.the products mainly about looking at the details of people around me act and see it in a positive light. Some of the complimentary might seems sarcastic, and there a few ways people see it which is positive or negative.
Describe the importance of this method with regards to the project
Interview: get to know the reaction from people who is tired and how they will feel if they get such thing as a part of a campaign. interview more useful because it’s direct and people really is feeling tired so i can get to know what their reaction will be if they receive the item.
Iterative design: how design affects people feelings in some way, and i need to get the general/ majority of people reaction through certain type of illustration i can do and which one they like more and makes them feels happy.
Detail the type of information that can be gathered with this kind of research
The interview will be held on mrt and buses because the campaign mostly targeted to busy people who need a reminder to feel delighted. approximately age 16 to 35 years old gather and easily found in public transportation. Knowing how people will feel when they do and receive the campaign act itself.
From iterative design i can get to know if people will take it happily and how the items make them feels because design can affect people's feeling. Some don’t like monster type of illustration and that might make them not feeling happy but some will still feel happy because of the act itself. How the giver act also affecting on how people see the act of kindness of the giver is. For example: “Hang in there” is an encouragement for people who don’t have seat especially on peak hours. if the giver give the item while sitting down it might offend the receiver.

Step 2 : Observe
Explain the kind of research that can be used For further step, it’s better to observe on how kids behaving when they’re with digital devices and not. To do this, the type of group interviewing first then doing field work that can be done in a week. Observing kids may involve with emotion, so it’s better to not observing them for too long. Anthropology will be used to get other information, of kids as i can’t observer stranger kids as my research material where the parents might felt disturbed by me following the children.
Describe the importance of this method with regards to the project By doing field study, having the first-hand experience would be better as because the information i get will be more detail. Even though it can be time-consuming, but by managing time and set a time period it’ll be helpful not too time-consuming but still get enough data. Getting and knowing the real information as it may be different from other people/ parents perspective because either it involve emotion not having other ideas that not match with the topic i’m researching for.
Detail the type of information that can be gathered with this kind of research The information that can be gathered by doing a field work is knowing how it really works. Understanding how the kids react to the device, knowing if the kids really are distracted with the device and still choose not to play games that more interactive in real person. Through group interviewing, i can get the data of average kids and parents with devices. With or without device, parents who oppose and accept the device around their children.
Movie
The movie Avatar use as the case study to understand what and where the type of research is used. In the movie Neytiri as informant giving out information about the native of Pandora on how culture and habit work to the outsider Jake sully which known as sky people. In the other hand, Jake sully is considered as participants observer, because he goes to the field and learned it directly from Neytiri the native. The way of Jake sully collecting data as the participant observer who is covert, he would record it in a video form known as vlog today. The information is recorded in video right away after the day end, as the information in detail is still fresh. Meanwhile, the other researcher Grace is an overt non-participant observer. Grace not getting the information on how the culture is like and experience it, but she just observing. The way she collecting data is by taking notes right away in the field. The information in detail on how the custom and activity, only able to get from Jake sully, which make Grace is a non-participant observer in this state. From this movie, Emic and Etic type of research can be found too. Emic is totally used by the researchers because they understand it better. Etic in the other hand is used by the military group, where they understand the information they get from a group of researchers in their own way. which might cause a misunderstanding.

Step 1 : research
• Explain the kind of research that can be used
formative and summative can be used.
• Detail the type of information that can be gathered with this kind of research
By using formative research i’ll be looking to the demographic of my target audience and some psychographics. I’m aiming to the parents more than the youth. However, youth opinion can be useful for this research too. I want people start to think about the problem on parenting especially towards millennial kids. From formative method the information that can be gathered are: - Knowing if the problem is noticed by people - Types of parents - Parents who willing to change their style of parenting - How parents facing a problem of their kids - Parents with certain age range - Income level - Race - How parents who born in different generations (according to age range) teach their kids - How parents teaching would affect their children's behaviour in the future - Which method is better? teach kids with digital device or let kids go outside and explore? - What is youth parenting style preference
• Describe the importance of this method with regards to the project
The data collected can let me create a few persona, and see which way would be useful to change their way of teaching if it’s considered as wrong (according to norm and moral). Which parents is willing to change, and which are not. Meanwhile, the data from youth is useful on how they would think when it comes to parenting, how their parents teach them, and if they regret not taught another way. Knowing if we as a kid being taught correctly by our parents about how we should behave and how their teaching affect our behavior today. Seeing on how youth look at the little kids (millennials) taught today with electronics device most of us would think kids these days are spoiled and shouldn’t be treated like so. Knowing how parents have a big role in children’s growth i think this is the time to change people's mental from the young age, since most of the youth today called as impatient, lazy and so on. This is used to get to know if we as a kid being taught correctly by our parents about how we should behave and how their teaching affect our behavior today. how parents these days teach their kids, and how they teach their kid would affect their personality when they grow up later considering the digital devices and internet keep improving day by day.
