Book Worm: Build Your Own Overland Camper Chris Cordes / March 13th, 2017 (@4x4_touring) . There are probably more than a few of us who have dreamed of owning an overland camper. Even the most die-hard tent lovers have probably longed for a heated interior during a rain-soaked, frost-bitten night. But for those who make it past the dreaming stage and decide to pursue one of these four-wheel drive behemoths, the path can be challenging. For starters, large campers are really expensive. Pre-made units from Earthroamer, GXV, and other manufacturers range from the $200,000’s to more than a million dollars, and used options are often heavily worn or equally high priced." . Check out The Top 10 Stories compilation of 2016 on @expeditionportal . . "If you’ve been paying attention to social media or the news, it seems like 2016 has been the worst year ever. It’s true, the past 12 months have had more than their fair share of disappointments and tragedies, but there was also plenty of good news buried in those massive, steaming, piles of bad. For example, the populations of several endangered species including tigers and pandas began to rise, India planted a record breaking 50 million trees in one day, a peace deal was finally reached in Colombia helping to stabilize the region, new strides were made against cancer, and China banned its ivory trade helping to save the elephants. Yes even among all the crap there is still a bright side to 2016, and so in the spirit of looking at the positives, we’ve gone back to the archives and pulled out the ten articles you all liked most. While they don’t compare to any of the news above, we hope they’ll at least put a smile on your face and contribute to a positive start in 2017." -by Chris Cordes (@wayward_wanderings) . Off Road Review: Chevy Colorado Diesel . "It’s no secret that General Motors made some serious waves with the introduction of their new Colorado and Canyon lines. With only minimal signs of life from their four-wheel drive department since the death of Hummer, I’d say it surprised more than a few of us when they not only set their sights on the Frontier and Tacoma, but then trumped them with the only thing their competitors didn’t offer, a diesel. Car magazines of every nature clamored to get their hands on a test truck, but with each review touting the truck’s off-road prowess came a series of pictures on graded dirt roads, pull offs next to the highway, and even a few shots on a grass covered shoulder. Really? Clearly GM wasn’t letting these vehicles wander far, so we thought we’d shake things up a bit with a test proposal so ridiculous that they just might say yes." - by Chris Cordes (@wayward_wanderings) and Jack Quinones (@newmexicobackroads) . Riding Full Circle: The U-Turn - by Heather Lea and Dave Sears. . "The first thing I did after crashing my motorcycle into the ditch was get out the camera. What had happened and how it was about to effect our plans hadn’t set in yet. The G650GS lay cratered on its side in the dirt and rocks. I’d tagged a boulder on the trail with my hardcase pannier and lost control of the bike. It was a fantastic scene especially with the offending pannier at rest up the road after its tomahawking dismount off the frame. Nothing hurt until I zipped my camera back into my tank bag. My wrist was broken. The throttle hand. To top the day off it was my birthday."... . Abentueur & Allrad 2016 : The world's biggest offroad show - by Michael Brailey . "This year the Abenteuer & Allrad show in Bad Kissingen held a lot in store for visitors and exhibitors alike. The weather had been threatening some horrific storms and, on Saturday evening, made an impressive visit with downpours, gales and thunder. Thankfully the remainder of the show was fair to hot other than a few occasional showers, which were unable to deter a record number of visitors during the four days. 55000 enthusiasts from all walks of life and every corner of the globe came to see the latest equipment and the newest vehicles, and to talk about their own experiences past and journeys future." . Desk to Glory: The Lagunas Road by @desktoglory . "The infamous Lagunas Route (otherwise known as the Southwest Circuit) is a 400 plus kilometer off-road track from Uyuni, Bolivia to San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. Meandering through Bolivia’s altiplano, or high plain, the route winds through soft sand, over bumpy washboards and through short sections of rocky outcrops. The scenery is otherworldly, desolate and beautiful. Glacial salt lakes appear in strange, vivid colors such as rusty reds and alien greens. Latte toned volcanic peaks appear on the horizon as though painted in watercolor. Pink flamingos huddle together in the middle of semi-frozen lakes attempting to conserve body heat in the sub-zero temperatures. As the Talking Heads once said, “And you may ask yourself, well… how did I get here?”" . #bolivia #overland #expeditionportal #adventuremobile #homeoswhereyouparkit . Overland Expo 2016: The Mobile Abodes - by Christopher Noel (@christophe_l_noel) . "Overlanding in its many forms is in a constant state of flux. A few years ago the all-terrain trailer was at its peak popularity. This year’s Overland Expo proved that the live-aboard platform is gaining momentum with an increasing number of manufactures and travelers choosing to package their home and wheels into one mobile abode. Although the Unimog, Unicat and Earthroamer are lust worthy things, they are massive in size, get single-digit fuel efficiency and fetch eye watering prices. The introduction of the 4WD Mercedes-Benz Sprinter platform last year has opened many doors for the live-in traveler as has the slide-in camper." . http://expeditionportal.com/overland-expo-2016-the-mobile-abodes/

Let the wave hit your feet and the sand be your seat. - by Lisa Morris and Jason Spafford (@twowheelednomad ) . "Night had fallen with a crystalline clarity that made the chill intense. The stars seemed to press down in a way that I hadn’t seen before. The God of Winter was not about to relinquish its hard-won dominion without a tussle. Through the night, the rain froze on impact leaving the ground frigid outside the tent. Pulling the warm sleeping bag around my shoulders, I attempted to fend off the night’s chill breath. I’d slept without changing for the last few nights, my clothes seemed part of me, like thick folds of aged skin. With traces of the moon bringing some illumination, trickling light into the world, I peeled myself unwillingly from my cocoon. The damp night air raining with snow felt sharp in my lungs: today was the day." ... Read the whole story on @expeditionportal (click link in profile)
