On the contrary, Haibara found herself bemused by Hibiki’s little breakdown. She merely lifted a single eyebrow, watching him with a tilted head and crossed arms. It was safe to say Hibiki finally had the rite of passage called “the Haibara experience.”

Though, he was starting to turn a bit purple, so Haibara filed the memory away and walk closer to Hibiki to pat his head condescendingly. Damn, it was going to be hard getting eye level with this guy’s booty. Ah well, she still had fluffy for her viewing pleasure.

“Kuze-kun, if you suffocate to death Kudou-kun won’t be happy with me. Take deep breaths now.” Part of her wanted to make him go ‘he he huu’ like a pregnant woman but she was in a good mood now. So she made do with rubbing his back with mock-sagely wisdom. “There, there. It’s okay now.”

Once Hibiki calmed down enough to sit up straight, she took his hand and placed a tube of concealer(mysteriously matching his skin tone and not Haibara’s) along with her pocket mirror (with carved kittens on its cover for some reason) in his palm.

“Now, usually I’d take the opportunity to turn this into a lesson to not take mysterious cosmetics from strangers that can contain anything from radioactive metals to itching powder but since you put me in a good mood, I’ll let you off the hook this once.” So generous. Of course she could be lying but Hibiki will have to take this risk.

Anyway, to begin with, she physically can’t carry entire palettes of prank cosmetics on her in case she needs to make fun of some poor saps. Being eight reduces your weight capacity quite drastically. It’s unlikely anyone who’s not Kaitou Kid or something would bother pulling such shit to begin with.

“Reapply it every three hours and be careful around liquids. It’s not water resistant. And wash it off to let your skin breath at night or you might get rashes.” She patted Hibiki’s face like one would with a child and stood up.

“Oh and, Kuze-kun, I want my mirror back later.”

Haibara hung her head to hide her face, the very picture of a little girl hiding her tears. Well...shucks. She ends up feeling guilty herself when they’re this nice. Ah well, she’ll give this one an A+ on attitude and hope he improves his situational awareness. With a little push maybe. He was well mannered enough to get to her level after all.

“I could’ve killed or incapacitated you so many times in the last few minutes.” A low whisper.

Without giving Hibiki time to collect himself, she trapped his nose between two fingers. Not tight enough to hurt but not so easy to get away from either. When she lifted his face, it was the neutral gaze of the usual Haibara Ai, gleaming with piercing intellect

“I carry scalpels I could’ve used to sever your femoral artery while you were standing there. I have access to most of your unguarded vitals, even as I speak.” Word flew unhurriedly, not a speck of mocking or disapproval to be heard. Contents themselves were clear enough for a clever ear. Her other hand was pointing at Hibiki’s weak spots one by one as she spoke, occasionally emphasizing her point with light pokes from soft, tiny fingers.

“I have, on my person, several chemicals that can kill or neutralize an elephant. And bare hands, even those of a child, can inflict fatal damage if used in right ways.” She made no mention of the nifty tools she already had equipped. From this distance, she could dart him point blank in the blink of an eye.

Well, no reason to bully the poor guy any longer. She released her hold, leaving the tip of Hibiki’s nose painted indigo.

“I know Kudou-kun has a lot going on-” The icy expression disappeared in favor of a more natural -albeit, far smaller- smile. ”But he should take better care to keep his subordinates on their toes. In your line of work, you never know which mistake will be the last.” 

“Well, at least you seem to already have to most important quality for this kind of work.” She wasn’t one for flowery words. Instead her hand rose to point at the taller boy’s heart as she let the short silence hang. “You are a good person, Kuze Hibiki-kun. But remember kindness and caution don’t have to be mutually exclusive next time.”

To drive the point home, she whipped out a hand mirror and held it against Hibiki’s face so he could check out his new nose.

“Don’t bother rubbing your skin raw. It’ll fade on it’s own in three days, but not before.” Her smile had a smug tint now. “A little reminder to remember this lesson by.”

Of course she had no business calling random employees of Shinichi, ‘onii-san’. But a girl will do what a girl has to do to optimize her trolling. So Hibiki will have to deal with it for now. Incidentally that’s also why he’s not having his intensines ripped out for calling her ‘Ai-chan‘ now.

“Eeeh? Onii-chan doesn’t know papa? He’s the super famous high school detective, you know? If onii-san works here, he should also be onii-san’s boss.” Haibara acted out the part of the shocked little girl. Then she gasped as if she just realized something and turned her gaze to her boots.

“Papa... Papa’s still embarrassed about Ai-chan, isn’t he? That’s why he doesn’t tell anyone about her.” Actual tears welled up in her eyes. Oh yes, she can fake appendicitis good enough to force a murderer into showing his hand. Fake tears are child’s play to this heartless little monster.

“Even though Ai-chan is doing her best...” She lifted his arm to muffle the tears with her sleeve...and hide her smirk as she continued with a shaky voice. “Papa likes the coffee that fluffy nii-chan makes better than Ai-chan’s lunches.” A sniff for emphasis  

“Ai-chan doesn’t want the fluffy nii-chan as her new mama! Papa will completely forget about Ai-chan! What will Ai-chan do then?” She turned to Hibiki with teary eyes. “Onii-san... What should Ai-chan do to make papa like her again?”

It had been a while since Haibara last gave her primary guinea pig a thorough examination. So she’d been hoping to find him quick. And check up on her favorite errand boy. But she was approached by a stranger instead.

Well, she did glimpse the boy around TCDF from time to time while keeping a low profile. He seemed very...friendly. Maybe too friendly? Unsuspecting? She sized him up mutely for a moment. He seemed to be of the same cloth as the previous superintendent. Underestimated her and got darted down and examined for his trouble.

Wait actually. This might be a good chance to keep Kudo-kun and his subordinates on his toes. Plus, she looked just young enough for the part. Time to put those action lessons from Yukiko-san to test with her cutest, purest smile. She looked even younger than she usually now.

“Unn~ Hibiki onii-san, then. I’m Ai. I came to bring Papa his lunch.” She smiled adorably while pointing at her box shaped backpack. Luckily, she wasn’t carrying one of her designer bags today, since none of them fit all her medical equipment in.

“You know, you know? Ai-chan’s papa is boss of the police and bestest detective ever! Greater than Holmes” She borrowed Ayumi’s third person habit for maximum efffect and widened her arms excitedly, in perfect imitation of a boastful child. Then she skillfully deflated with a pout. “But papa always forgets his lunch now. So Ai-chan brought it to him this time.”

It’s nothing unusual to see a short female first grader leaving the ladies’ room.

Although, it might get a bit weird if that room is inside the police headquarters where access is (supposedly) strictly monitored.

Some people might scratch their head in confusion if the said child in a lab coat was never seen entering the building, or the ladies’ room itself, to begin with.

Selected few will know said room also holds one of the secret entrances to Japan Meteorological Agency, Geomagnetism Research Department. Also known as JP’s.

Even less people would be aware of such a child’s identity, her relation to the police chef and the fact that she is on the aforementioned secret organization’s payroll. And for those people alone, such a sight would make sense.

Name of that child? Well... You may call her Haibara Ai. And she is currently leaving TCDF first floor ladies’ room at a leisure gait like she owns the place.

Of course there is always the possibility Kudo-kun lost his antidote which I shouldn’t have given him in the first place. And some idiot found and consumed it, mistaking it for regular painkillers. And then as a result, instead of dying horribly, their biological clock went on a wild ride.

But the chances that a perfectly healthy person taking an antidote they don’t need, one which carries considerable risk of death for its intended targets, would survive is abysmally close to zero.

Therefore, whatever this talk of people growing and shrinking in the city is about, I had honestly nothing to do with it this time.

The much intriguing case of a select number of Toshi citizens developing dormant and catalyzed superpowers, sporadically accompanied by physical deformations(Or reformations. It was an ongoing research), was unfortunately over. Or perhaps not. There are limits to how much one can learn through observation alone, even if you are a certified evil genius of scientific method.

Let's face it, Haibara isn't the most restrained person in these parts. Plus, she wasn't conditioned to be too concerned with pesky little things like laws or human rights. A flaw in her education her closest human contact certainly wasn't helping fix. Sigh, detectives. Still, she managed to catch a nice little vacation from Kudou Shinichi's gay old criminal adventures. And without strapping any innocents on an operation table against their will.

Wrapping up experiments. Starting new ones. Proving some theories. Working towards the completion of a certain antidote. Dissecting some random crows unfortunate enough to get within the range of her spare wristwatch in her free time. All the while refusing to let that one troublesome death magnet of a detective drag her into yet another one of his typical messes.

Ah, yes. Life has been good for Haibara.

And with any hope, it would stay that way. Else she was blocking Shinichi's number for good.

Nah. Who are we kidding. She's just going to enjoy the peace and quiet while she can.

"Of course. I'm sure you know what to do." Hopefully. She sure as hell didn't when she upped and left. There would be no encore from Haibara if they tried that shit again. Then again, it should be pretty rare for every single boss to abandon their post at the same time.

"If that is all, I've been neglecting my research lately. I have quite a lot of catching up to do." She moved to grab her bag. Not gonna be back in this room for a while, nope. Maybe she should say some goodbyes on the way out... Nah. Not her style.
