I still hold that her semblance is fueled by intense emotions, not just anger. Though, early in the series, it seems to be anger which is why it's compared to being a temper tantrum.
That's something I've been thinking about as well. It would explain orange being kind of a intermediate color - when she's having fun fighting or is intensely focused.
