Taking your average shovel, bucket, and spoon, Lithuanian-based artist Severija Inčirauskaitė-Kriaunevičienė embroiders them with detailed cross stitch designs. She often adorns these items using conventional floral motifs, and combines the decorative art with the practical everyday object  (view some of her previous work). Most of the time, however, this renders its usefulness obsolete.
Severija’s work is cognizant of the history surrounding craft in her country. In an essay about her embroidery, Dr. Jurgita Ludavičienė writes:
Employing irony, Severija conceptually neutralizes the harmfulness of kitsch’s sweetness and sentimentality. Irony emerges in the process of drawing inspiration from the postwar Lithuanian village, with which artists have lost connection today, or from the destitute Soviet domestic environment, which women were trying to embellish with handicrafts, no matter what kind of absurd forms it would take. The intimacy of indoors freed from all tensions is the essence of coziness, that is crystallized in Severija’s works as cross stitch embroidery on various household utensils not intended for it.

Míralo: El Mejor Comercial en el Super Bowl 2014 Watch: The Best Commercial from the Super Bowl
Tumblr media

Best commercial from last night’s Super Bowl: GoldieBlox! GoldieBlox is a company I’ve been hearing from a while now. Debbie Sterling, a graduate from Stanford University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering/Product Design, decided that it was not acceptable how few women were in her program. She founded Goldie Blox, a toy company invested in creating toys for girls that go beyond the princesses, baby dolls, Barbie and, especially, all that nauseating pink gender code.

Ni Una Mujer a la Vista / Not a Woman in Sight
Tumblr media
————-
The only thing that makes this whole thing bearable (using ‘bearable’ in its loosest possible sense), is the mere fact that this is news to absolutely no one. We have all heard and referred to the term ‘glass ceiling’, but oftentimes, in doing so it becomes a remote concept that can be safely stored away in an uncategorized compartment, buried deep on a section of the brain that we like to call the ‘back burner’. So please, allow me to, perhaps, ruin your day and introduce you to: '100% Men', a tumblr dedicated to the cringe-inducing cause of reminding us that there are still many, many places of power where there is still not a woman in sight. Because when we can pin point to cold hard facts, it no longer feels remote; it becomes menacing.
Definitely worth a look on your own and, if possible, please contribute by submitting new ugly sad truths!
Here are some posts worthy of note:
Everyone who matters at some of the world’s biggest ad agencies
Twitter’s entire Board of Directors
All speakers at “The Startup Conference, all speakers at Techweek Chicago’s  Startup, Go International, and Future of Media summits.
Every journalist to whom President Obama grants off-the-record briefings, according to Politico
Everyone at “Team Netflix.” (The one woman in management is, as usual, head of human resources)

Very rarely do I like tattoos, but this is one of those times.

I had the fortune of having Andrea Deszo as a teacher at Parsons. A very particular woman. Such a pleasure to introduce her through Lionza, it's a small world!

--------------
"When I was 19, my girlfriend and I were going to study in Paris. Our boyfriends came to the docks to see us off. Right as we were getting on the ship, my friend’s boyfriend said to her: ‘If you go, I won’t wait for you.’ So she turned around and decided to stay. My fiance saw this and told me: ‘I won’t wait for you either.’I said: ‘Don’t!’”
