I hate how people will look at popular indie artists who had one or two songs go viral on TikTok and start making fun of anybody who listens to them. "Oh you listen to Lemon Demon, Will Wood, Jack Stauber, Glass Animals, and Mother Mother? Tsk, don't you know that is stupid TikTok neurodivergent white transmasc preteen music? It's so mid and bad you should listen to real music–" you are a pit of misery

AJR is a punching bag for many of the online music critics. Mainly because AJR make very earnest music. They write about struggles: mental health, trying to balance having a life with friends while gaining popularity, and just the struggles of being in your 20s and early 30s.
But they always end their albums and many of their songs on an optimistic, earnest note. (One song is literally called Touchy Feely Fool!)
Their newest album The Maybe Man is tied together from beginning to end. Starting with someone struggling to find out who they are to realizing that who they are at the moment is important.
And if their music/lyrics aren't your thing, no skin off my back. But the amount of hate for people writing sincere songs really is pervasive with just the culture of making fun of people who are earnest and unapologetically themselves.
Their songs also hit my ADHD just right. There's always something there to latch onto and hold my attention.
Anyway. Be you! Have fun! Don't others stop you or make you feel ashamed of something you love.
(Also, I highly suggest going to see them in concert: they put on a show, including wirework, puppets, lots of using multimedia that makes it more Broadway, trap doors, and flailing dancing.

Lyrics of the last song 2085 on their last album. It balances the "more stupid" parts of their songs with the over-the-top sentimental.

“AJR is my favorite band, and part of what drew me to their music is how they narrow down on a hyper-specific scenario or emotion that in a world of millions of songs about love, gets lost in the music industry. Their albums also tend to be tied together by a specific theme. The Click is about how other people form who you are, Neotheater is about apprehension for the future, OK Orchestra is about being eternally stuck feeling “okay,” and The Maybe Man is about the instability of life and uncertainty of yourself. The album opens with the track “Maybe Man,” where the singer laments on different things he would rather be, but after contemplating the downsides of each, changes his mind. He goes through several things, even deciding he wants to be God, before realizing that he simply wishes to be himself; he just doesn’t know who that is. The rest of the album has songs about the struggles of personal relationships, how others perceive you, and dissatisfaction with yourself, all of which (especially the latter) tackle the issue presented in the opening number: how can you be yourself if you don’t know who you are? For most of the album, the singer is letting others decide who he is, but in the final number “2085,” taking place in the same year, the singer looks back on his life. Even in his old age, he hasn’t found who he is. Then he has a realization: at this point, it’s too late to truly figure out who he is, but he did have an identity. He was a person who adapted to others and tended to mold his personality differently for different people. He was the Maybe Man, someone who was everything and anything he needed to be. And with that, the album comes to an end, but there are several clues (that I won’t get into right now) that imply the album is meant to be looped, and that the story of The Maybe Man (both the character and the album itself) is a cyclical one.”

My favorite line on the whole album:
Tumblr media
The whole album is so relatable, but the delivery of this line resonates with me so much. I'd rather do ANYTHING than ask for help. Then just be like "dang, why did I just ask for help?"

Happy thirsty thirsty thursday to you
Finally adding Living Room to my AJR playlist is probably the best decision I’ve ever made bc i was listening to it on shuffle and I heard:
“These things take time. Mom and Dad, they have a good life. But what the hell am I gonna do with mine…?”
…
