got any tips for writing an enjoyable toxic relationship? ps. love your work, can't wait for it to come out in full.

hmm i think to me what makes any relationship compelling--whether its unhealthy or not--is that the 2 characters' interactions w each other reveal or accentuate key pts of their personalities... so like, they kind of act as a foil for one another.

in a toxic or unhealthy relationship, it usually highlights both characters' fatal flaws... and i think its why i like exploring this kind of dynamic, bc i like flawed characters and exploring How each character reacts differently to the same situation bc of their opposing motivations. theres also the push and pull tension btween the characters, the constant shifting in power dynamics, and how even despite their differences they are still drawn back to each other. There, you can explore parallels btween the two chars, the similarities in their wants vs. needs and the ways in which they complement each other in unexpected ways. Maybe they have the same needs, but the way they go about obtaining it is completely different.

Relatedly, i think stuff like this usually falls flat whenever you spell out these characters' personalities/flaws to the audience instead of showing it thru a specific series of actions and decisions that align with their motivations. these actions don't even have to be extravagant, it can be shown through how they handle every day mundane situations and interactions. it is not realistic for characters to have deep insight into themselves and have "therapy terms" for why they are doing certain things. for eg, clare going: "i just have a complicated relationship with my sexuality and i feel insecure about it!" to ena is less fun, compared to maybe showing her trying to date men and failing, while always seeming to have a consistent sexual relationship w women (and being completely oblivious to this fact).

hopefully any of this is useful lol these are just my disjointed thoughts abt writing complicated relationships in general!! 💀

its set in the early 2000s so everyone was a little homophobic by default compared to todays standards. she doesnt rly need to hide it

I've only heard tenderqueer used in a deragatory way towards nonbinary ppl from like, terf types and transmeds, so I assumed it was just another way of calling trans people snowflakes. seeing that anon and you not mention it scared the hell outta me bc of that lmao.

ive seen it used in that way also which is why i dont use it.... its a very arbitrary term w varying connotations like many other online terms that ppl just use for ppl they dont like

it was originally a pejorative term for white queers who put emphasis on their queerness to deflect from any other criticism (racism) but i think ppl use it now to describe queer ppl who are too sensitive abt certain "problematic" elements .... like for eg 'tenderqueers' wouldnt like my ocs bc maybe clare is internally homophobic. its not a term i personally like to use but this is how i understand it
