DISCLAIMER: In an effort to make interactions easier, and so I don’t have to come up with a completely separate verse, this is my attempt at melding Twilight and The Vampire Diaries canon together into a somewhat comprehensible and cohesive narrative. Mind you, I have not watched The Vampire Diaries all the way through, nor have I seen The Originals, so I may have gotten some information wrong here ( in which case, let me know and I’ll fix it! ). It’s still messy and it probably doesn’t make a whole lot of sense because it’s late here, but this is basically what I’ll be assuming when I interact with TVD characters. You are by no means obligated to follow this! And if you would like to discuss other options, please don’t hesitate to let me know. *   do  not  reblog.
There are two main vampire lines. The first line—and the line that Jane and others like her descend from—begins with the First Vampire, Lilith; the blood-sucking she-demon whom was originally reported across several different religious texts to be Adam’s first wife. Yes, that Lilith. Lilith was originally created alongside Adam in God’s image, to be Adam’s equal. However, when Adam tried to subdue her, she fled and refused to return to him even at the pleading of Angels. Instead, she chose to become the wife of a demon and in doing so became a demon herself ( There are many many different versions of this, and I would be here all day if I tried to break down the origins of Lilith but that’s not the point of this post so just bear with me ). Thus, Lilith became the First Vampire and the progenitor of the line of vampires that we would find familiar in The Twilight Saga. They are the first and oldest vampire race, attributing to their unique makeup—although it has changed over time, which will be addressed in another post—and special abilities.
The second vampire line begins with the Mikaelsons; the Originals, as they call themselves. While they are not the original, first vampires to walk the Earth, they are original in the sense of how they became vampires. The Mikaelsons became what they are through the Immortality Spell. A witch’s spell, and thus all vampires we’re familiar with in The Vampire Diaries were created from them.
These two lines exist in tandem and co-exist together, but not always peacefully. For all intents and purposes, the Volturi still exists and sees themselves as the “leaders” of the vampire world; the ones who set down the laws and uphold them.  They play judge, jury, and executioner to those that would break the laws they set forth to protect the secrecy of their race.
Because the Mikaelsons, and those created by them, were essentially created through a witch’s spell, there exists some tension between the two lines. Much older vampires, like the Volturi Masters, for example, find them to be inferior and not “true” vampires, as they can be killed much easier and, if in possession of the Cure, can become human again if they so wished.
Despite this, there is certainly no denying that the Mikaelsons, and those created by them, pique the Volturi Masters’ interest. Aro, in particular, and in typical Aro fashion, is always looking for a unique stand-out to add to his collection; and this is perhaps the only reason why action has never been taken to rid the world of a second vampire line. At least, not yet.

𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 & 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐞𝐢 & 𝐲𝐚𝐧𝐚.
In the year 782 CE, twin infants were born to a Slavic woman named Yelena.  The two babes were named Yana and Alexei, and from the day they were born they were rumoured to bring ill luck wherever they went.  Their father, a Viking man they’d never learned the name of, was killed when they were still mere children for his past crimes against the people of what would eventually become Kievan Rus’, as the Viking raids had claimed countless lives of the locals there.  Due to her status as an unwed mother of two that had chosen to bed a Viking man, Yelena was ostracised from her community and forced to leave with her children.
The family of three was forced to migrate for most of their lives, unable to settle down anywhere for any extended amount of time due to prejudice against their Slavic heritage and the heavy xenophobia that was present at the time.  For over a decade they lived on the move, learning to hunt and scavenge for clothes, shelter, and food whenever a settlement refused them even the sanctuary of a bed for the night.  Over the years, the twins learned to fend for themselves as Yelena’s health began to decline, and in early 800 CE they noticed their mother had become very ill.
They’d hoped that their luck had changed when they came to England.  Yana had been optimistic despite the previous times they’d been turned away from settling anywhere, hoping that due to their mother’s illness, a healer might allow them to stay until she’d recovered, giving them a sense of stability they’d never experienced.  Alexei had even dreamed that, perhaps, they’d show their skills learned on the road and be able to prove to the people of England that they were a boon to their community despite their heritage.
Unfortunately, Yelena was denied any treatment as they all but carried her into the town square, her brow covered with a sheen of sweat and her children begging for help.  The language barrier between them served to only amplify the cold glares of the townspeople, and the people turned them away and scorned them, just as others had done before.  Though they tried their best to try and appeal to them, it was just the twins ill luck that Yelena died in their arms in the middle of that very town square—her children holding her corpse with tears in their eyes while surrounded by nothing short of an enraged mob.  Shouts and screams began as soon as Yelena’s head lolled to the side, unseeing eyes staring at the priest coming down from the church’s steps.  Her immediate death and the fact that they were outsiders ignited a fear within the crowd, promptly casting public ire upon the two children.
The church swiftly labeled the twins as witches, fanning the flames of resentment and terror by citing the twins’ Pagan beliefs and their status as outsiders for proof.  The priest gestured grandly at the cooling corpse of their mother, declaring she’d passed away from “the sickness they’ve brought upon us,” and the crowd roared their displeasure and distrust in the faces of the two children they’d made the subject of their hatred.  It was a unanimous decision to burn them at the stake in order to protect the souls of their people, and the church officials ordered everyone to return to their homes as they did what needed to be done.
It was as they were bound to the pyre, flames carving wicked lines into the frail flesh of their legs, that Aro appeared as an avenging angel.  The Volturi intervened on their behalf after stories of the twins spread from nomads, who had noticed the poor luck that followed those who’d scorned them and the good luck that blessed those that helped them.  It was Aro’s decision to swiftly eliminate the church officials that had stood around the pyre, reveling in the torment of the twins, while leaving everyone who’d hidden inside untouched.  He’d bitten the twins himself, carrying them away to endure the change in the safety of Volterra, and leaving behind the scene of carnage that would inspire the legend of the demon twins who had massacred the village upon attempting to purge their existence.
The legend of the twins would carry on for countless generations, firmly cementing them in place as figures of local folklore.

Jane does not consider any of the Masters a parental figure. While she considers the Volturi, as a whole, her extended family, the closest she might consider someone to that level is Aro, and even then she would never think to call him a father. She does, however idolise and respect him very much as her creator, which puts him on a pedestal above the rest. Jane and Alec are the direct result of his intervention in their lives; his venom courses through their veins, meaning that they are intrinsically tied to Aro for eternity as his guards and as his progeny. It is important to note, especially for my portrayal, that Jane is absolutely loyal to Aro without the use of outside forces ( ie. Chelsea or Corin’s abilities ) to keep her content and happy in her place among the Volturi.
She does not see the need for a parental figure in her life. For one, Jane is old enough to consider herself emotionally independent. Secondly, what she remembers of her human life, and her mother ( she never knew her father ) is few and far between, but her mother did love her and Alec and as such she feels no need to replace her. Even if she couldn’t remember her at all, she has Alec – and as far as Jane is concerned, he is the only real family she has, wants, or needs in life.
When it comes to Caius and Marcus, while she is still loyal and respects them a great deal, her relationship with each of them is vastly different and on a more detached level than her relationship with Aro. She would consider Caius the second of the Masters she is closest to; but again, does not see him as a father figure. Rather, she sees him as more of a mentor and someone she shares the same sort of mindset with in regards to her immense propensity for anger, cruelty and violence. If she is loyal to Aro ( and Alec ) first, then her loyalty to Caius extends second.
Out of all the Masters, she holds the least strongest relationship with Marcus. This is, in large part, to do with his own detachment as much as hers. Again—she still respects him a great deal as one of the Masters, and is undoubtedly loyal, but their lack of any real closeness means that Jane would sooner speak to Aro or Caius before speaking to Marcus directly.
