Javier Escuella died in Mexico, in his homeland. I don't know if that makes his fate sadder or not.
Javier became a revolutionary at some point in his life, likely in adolescence or early adulthood. He fought for fair wages and food for the people of Nuevo Paraiso. He fought despite revolutionaries receiving cruel punishments, such as death or castration.
Javier killed a man in Mexico. More specifically, a military man or some other important figure of power. They had a dispute over a woman and Javier killed him. Fearing the consequences his actions might have, he fled Mexico for the sake of his family. For if he stayed, his actions would be their noose.
Now an enemy to the Mexican government, Javier fled to America. Despite not knowing the land. Despite being an outsider.
Javier fell in with Dutch Van der Linde and the gang in 1895. Fiercely loyal to Dutch's revolutionary ideals and Robin Hood attitude, Javier ultimately sided with Dutch in the falling out in 1899.
In RDR, Javier has returned to Mexico. When John tracks down Javier, he is found working for a new government in Nuevo Paraiso. Javier does bounty and hitman work for Allende in exchange for protection. While John does what he does in exchange for his family. It's poetic in a way. Not quite a mirror image, it's more like looking at your reflection in the water and seeing yourself distorted by its waves.
By the time Javier Escuella dies, he is a husk of the man we see in RDR2. Gone is the vain, proud man who plays guitar in the light of the campfire.
He flees Mexico to hide, and he dies in Mexico. Hiding.
