I feel like Wayhaven Chronicles is my "teenager obsessed with Twilight" phase that others seem to have had. Kdbdkbfkdbd-
Gods, I cannot wait for Book 4. And then I'll shrivel up waiting for Book 5. LET THE DETECTIVE AND THEIR VAMPIRE-OF-CHOICE KISS AND BE HAPPY AND SAFE!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAA-

People really hate Wulbren. And I support that, he's a dick. But when I see an asshole in a rpg game, my little brain goes hay wire. Why asshole? Who hurt you? What happened?
Because something DID happen to Wulbren.
I saw someone suggest that Wulbren's journal was charred because he burnt it himself or that he was making runepowder there.
But that doesn't track. That village has been abandoned for a LONG time. And that diary is OLD. This is a childhood journal. Barcus and Wulbren grew up in THAT village.
It explains why it's where Wulbren went to find a way to create runepowder out of all the places. It explains why Barcus knew Exactly where to find him. It also explains why you can find a paper in the Underdark outlining "Ironhand Gnome demands", ostensibly written by Wulbren, that says they're claiming a portion of the Underdark. Why would they need that? They live in the city. But it's their childhood home, and Wulbren cares enough about it to want to claim it for their's.
But that village is in rough shape. And so is every other Gnome village nearby, from the directional sign outside. Disaster befell every one. Including, I think, Wulbren and Barcus' childhood home.
Tumblr media
The most important part of this diary is "now that he's departed for the surface world" - Barcus left the Underdark first, when they were young. Likely before whatever destroyed their home occurred, seeing as Wulbren was still writing in this journal at the time.
They would have been close, then. Barcus gave Wulbren that necklace he showed you before he left for the surface. And Wulbren still had it in Baldur's Gate, though he lost it or it was stolen later. This means it was important enough to him that he was wearing it or took it with him when he left the Underdark later, after something forced his family to leave.
So, something happened to Wulbren Bongle. Baldur's Gate is the only home he has left. And Barcus Wroot is the only one he still has left from those days too, because you can actually find Wulbren's father's grave stone in the graveyard in Baldur's Gate.
That necklace - I'd bet good money he even has it again after since he reunited with Barcus. He's not exactly happy to see Barcus when they finally reunite. But he also seems to get angry because he feels like the whole thing was dangerous and Barcus is reckless and weak. Whereas he could handle himself. It's harsh of him to see Barcus as weak or incapable, but Barcus also does get captured a Lot. And it's only by luck alone that he wasn't killed. Hell, there's a whole pile of dead gnomes in Grymforge.
I also think Wulbren is Very bad at being open in front of others. He's a leader- and I think he believes that means he must not be vulnerable. Nickles is something of a good example of this, I think. He's invaluable because of his ability to read stone but prone to anxiety and uncertainty. Wulbren doesn't treat Nickles overly cruel while they're locked up in Moonrise, but he does redirect him snappily while planning an escape. If he showed fear in that instance, it would make Nickles freak right out. You Can freak Nickles out pretty bad when you talk to him in Act 3.
It's also telling to me that when you do go see Wulbren in Act 3, not only is Barcus still with the Ironhand Gnomes despite not really being apart of them, he's with Wulbren in the same room.
Anyway this is my Ted Talk about the fact that I'm sure Barcus' feelings are not unrequited.

It's taken me a while but I think I've really grown fond of Barcus and his little silly bald head. Larian let me kiss him or give him a hug. ;w;

Wtf... Astarion romance is actually kinda cute... Well, okay- I haven't gone far in Act 3 yet, but like- He went from cheesy vampire romance novella in Act 1 to giggly crush in Act 2 after he admits he genuinely likes you like---
Dude wtf. Cute...

I love the “tell the one about the man who married a drider!” line you get when volunteering Minthara at the circus, because she immediately gives the punchline “it was a beautiful webbing” and just accepts the fact that she is the funniest person you know
But not only that, the way it’s phrased with you referencing a specific joke and her immediately knowing what joke you’re referencing and the punchlines indicates that she had told you this joke at least once before.
It’s not just a random common joke, the way it’s phrased indicates that you both have some shared context for this joke and Minthara thinks it’s worth sharing.
So what this means is that Minthara likes to tell you bad drow puns/jokes during moments the game doesn’t show
So I’m imagining how many times Minthara has done something like sat down with the camp at night while eating a meal of 26 loaves of bread and 3 rotten apples, and begins telling an elaborate dark and twisted story about some fallen drow male who became infatuated with one of Lolth’s abominations, just to dead pan end it with “it was a beautiful webbing”

Many have written about how Karlach throws Astarion, well… Don't worry, no Astarions were harmed! But I can't say the same about Gortash…
