Safety in Sororities
29 percent of sorority girls experience sexual assault, that is 4 times the amount non sorority members do. I sat down with Chi Theta Pi's executive Risk Manager, Brie-Ann Jaber, and asked her what actions she takes to make sure her sisters make it home safe after a night out.
Chi Theta Pi is located in Bloomsburg, PA. The town of Bloomsburg has a population of 13,916 with 7,068 of them being college students. As for the university itself, Bloomsburg student population is 40% men and 60% women. The sorority itself is not affiliated with the college, although it once was. Without being backed by campus safety is really all on them.
The first thing that Brie-Ann does is pick a sister that remains sober the entire night, they call it "sober sister". The sober sister is in charge of picking up girls in need and bringing her to the safest spot where they will stay that night. I have also been told the Chi Theta Pi Sorority opens their house to sisters who are unable to make it home that night. Another thing Brie-Ann does is making sure all the girls leave and arrive together. When going out in a big group it is hard to keep track so partners is an amazing way she keeps everything in order. After a long night of being out girls must text Brie-Ann making sure they arrived back home safe. If girls fail to follow these rules things such as being able to go out the next week will be taken away.
I believe these cautious actions are necessary and so do many other sorority girls. Sitting down with one of Chi Theta Pi's sisters, Grace Harris, she expresses all the times Risk Managers measures has and continues to help her.  Grace states "One night while I was out I got separated from the group, shortly after a couple of guys approached me and they offered to walk me home but I declined. After I declined they insisted on waiting with me until someone came and got me. Thankfully I texted out sober sister and she was there within seconds bringing me back to the group. Although those guys were nice and I greatly appreciate them making sure I was okay you can never be too sure".
Lastly I would like to interview myself, Emily Bizik, since I am also a member of Chi Theta Pi. While I am coming up on my 2nd year here I have seen a lot, but my favorite thing is the support and love we give to every one of our sisters. When going through a rough time, whether it's a personal issue you want to keep to yourself or something you want to talk about, sisters are by your side with open arms and ears. I have never had a sister question my story or make me feel less than them when in a rough patch. A great group of support is always needed for keeping each other safe.
Sorority girls around the United States are consistently working to raise awareness for sexual assault from fundraisers to walks, but this issue is not just a sorority issue, this is a women issue. Over half of the women population around the world experience some kind of sexual assault. If you experience or see any kind of sexual assault please act accordingly and contact the police. “When women work together, it's a bond unlike any other” - Victoria Principal.
