(( Nostalgia is a dirty liar that makes things seem a lot better than they actually were. ))
Some days, Ellie would think of her life before the hideout. The warm summer nights when she would curl beside her mother on a roof somewhere, and watch the stars blink back at them from above. But those days were few and far in between. And the bad memories far outweighed the good. So why was it so painful to remember those moments? And why did she, now, find herself agonizing over leaving the hideout when she knew that not much would change. The people she was with would still be there. The friends she’d made in this place were more like family--when before, they had been complete strangers. Perhaps, she thought to herself, that was the reason. Just like the people, the place had once been foreign to her. But it, overtime, became a home. And it was the first home she’d ever known. Each corner held in its crevices a memory. Pieces of herself were still suspended here. In the hall where she first became a scout and felt like she would have a purpose. In the alleyway behind her home where she’d had her first kiss and also her first heartbreak. In the window of her room where she would read books until dawn.
And, in that same room, her mother had taken her last breath.
Perhaps that’s what was holding her back most of all. The fact that she had dug her mother’s grave with her own hands and was now leaving her behind. That there would be new memories, and new parts of her that her mother would never get to know.
Everyone, she knew, was dealing with this in their own way. Everyone had things they would miss here, and they had been working all day to load the essential supplies into their vehicles. It was almost time to move out completely.
As Ellie made her way back towards the medical wing to see if there was anything else left to carry out, the brunette heard a loud thud. She turned quickly to the source of the sound. “Hey. Do you need help with that?”

ENEMIES TO LOVERS, LOVERS TO ENEMIES AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN
“ you really expect me to believe a word you’re saying. now? after everything you’ve done. ”
“ do you really think i’m humble enough to ask for your help if i wasn’t truly fucking desperate? ”
“ you’re either really desperate to be coming to me, or you think i’m a lot stupider than i am. ”
“ face it, i know you better than anyone else. ”
“ somehow, out of everyone. even my own damn friends, you know me more. ”
“ i’ve seen parts of you no one else will ever understand. i see who you are. what you are. and i think you should stop making yourself smaller to make the world comfortable. ”
“ we’re nothing alike. i’ll never be like you. ”
“ why are you asking me for help? ”
“ you’re the only person who isn’t going to treat me with kid gloves right now. ”
“ you’re the only person who i know will let me do what i need to do without trying to talk me out of it. ”
“ i don’t understand what happened to us…why didn’t you trust me? ”
“ i’ve been in your shadow long enough. this isn’t about you. it’s about me, for once. ”
“ i’m not a project for you to finish. i’m not here to be part of your little savior complex. so stop trying to save me. ”
“ why didn’t you kill me? when you had the chance? ”
“ if you were going to kill me, you would have done it already. so, what do you want from me? ”
“ i think this is the first we’ve had a full conversation that didn’t involve you insulting me. ”
“ you’ve never held back from telling me the truth before. that’s what i’m counting on now. ”
“ i don’t hate you. i pity you. ”
“ i don’t hate you. i admire you. i always have. ”
“ i’d rather you hate me than be apathetic. hate means you still care. ”
“ please— just let me help you. ”
“ i don’t think you’re a monster. not really. i just think that’s what you tell yourself to feel strong. ”
“ i know you don’t believe me, but i’m trying to help. and i could actually do what i need to if you’d stop questioning me. ”
“ i’ve always been able to tell when you’re lying. ”
“ well actually, i came here to fight. but it looks like you’ve had a shit enough day it kinda feels like i’d be kicking a puppy. ”
“ no— please don’t cry. i’m…not good with the crying. ”
“ if we’re about to talk about feelings i’m out. ”
“ we could have had a future, you know. i wanted to do this with you. but you ruined it. ”
“ why are you really here? ”
“ i remember giving you this scar. you were so goddamn stubborn. ”
“ i love you. but that doesn’t change anything. ”
“ i don’t think you’re evil. i think you’re just lost. and alone. and you don’t know anything else. ”
“ it’s too late for me. ”
“ it’s not to late. i don’t believe that. ”
“ i’m just here to make sure you don’t get yourself killed. ”
“ i’m just not ready to tell the others about us. they won’t understand. ”
“ you’re the only one who has ever really understood me. ”

Daniel Wright wasn’t one to typically break the rules, let alone disobey one like that, but with everything going on as of late and the chaos..he’d been feeling somewhat disconnected. He was worried about Damien..and he didn’t agree with the way Axel had taken the task of finding him on his own, but what else could he do? He wouldn’t go out there without Ellie’s okay..so, this was..in a way different. Getting dressed the moment he had gotten her text, the scout sneakily made it to their meeting point, vaguely wondering if this was just some escapade or if Ellie had some motive in mind he hadn’t told him about yet. Eitherway, he did it. He got into a car and waited in darkness..beginning to worry only on the last second before he heard the light knocking on glass.
And will you look at that. His heart even picked up at the sight of the woman on the other side, finding himself stuck in awe before he could reach over and unlock the door..a smile soon drawing itself across his lips. “Why hello, sexy.” he chuckled, “..who are you and what have you done with my girlfriend?”
A smile curved up the corners of Ellie’s lips as she opened the car door and slid into the car. Her breath hitched in her throat as her eyes looked over him--his clothes, his smile, his demeanor. “Hey,” She breathed softly. It took her a moment to react. This whole thing was so new, it was a tad bit overwhelming. Going from the girl who dreamed about being his girl. To now having the freedom to do everything she had wanted to do for so long. Closing the door behind her, Ellie slid closer to Daniel, reaching up to cup the side of his face. “Hey boyfriend.” Pressing her lips against his in a quick greeting, before leaning back to smile at him. “I feel like a 12 year-old.” She chuckled. “Nothing would fit over this damn boot.”

@thedaniel-wright She was late. They had agreed to meet by the car--but it had been at least 30 minutes now and Ellie was still hobbling her way down to the garage. She had been icing her leg, on-and-off, all day. It wasn’t necessarily looking better, but it definitely didn’t hurt as badly as it had the night before. She’d gone to the infirmary and they managed to give her a boot to wear. Which was bulky and ugly, and it didn’t allow her to get any pants on, but she’d be damned if she wasn’t going to go out tonight. She threw on a summer dress--which she probably hadn’t worn since her teenage years--and hobbled down, trying not to attract any attention ( since they technically weren’t allowed to be out ). Ellie snuck around the border of the hideout, following the trail to where they kept the vehicles. A trail she had walked so many times before, but somehow felt longer now that she struggled to walk. But, as soon as she saw his shadow in one of the cars, she rushed to the passenger side and knocked on the window for him to let her in.

“..really.” Daniel huffed, not holding back the smile that crossed his lips at her laugh, “Did you really think I’d get that upset over you bein’ back the first time if I didn’t? I never stopped, May..and I don’t just see you as anybody else.” Someone he might just have a night of fun with and forget altogether the next morning. He wouldn’t dream of it. Running the back of his fingers along her arms, Wright easily welcomed the new closeness and hummed softly against those lips before brushing the tears away. The scout could definitely agree on ditching the pain or whatever it was that stopped them before from becoming this..so he nodded away, returning her happy kisses before pulling her in by the waist.. “I love you.” he chuckled, moaning raspily. “..wait. Does that mean you’re my girlfriend again? S’that still on the table?” Maybe, he thought, they should we agree on a set of rules. Anything to avoid what’d happened last time, if possible. There was just no need to rush now.
One last time, Daniel paused, thinking before talking. “..and hey. I’m sorry about your mom–we should..plan somethin’ for her.. I wanna be there for you.”
Ellie was left speechless momentarily, her mouth opening slightly--as if to speak--before snapping shut again. What could she say to all of this? What else was there to say, after this? She had been thinking about admitting her love to him forever now, and she’d been pushing it off for fear of rejection. Who was to say he didn’t want a break from her? But, oh God, was she wrong. She should have done this months ago. A small squeak escaped her lips at the word girlfriend. Something about it coming out of his lips made her insides turn to jelly, her knees practically giving out from under her. Leaning against him to hold herself upright, she said; “Yes… if you’ll be my boyfriend again.” Although they had been romantically involved before, she didn’t really remember them using those words often. Ellie hadn’t really believed in labels--if they knew what they meant to each other, who cares what it was called--until now. Until she realized how being called his made her feel invincible. Nothing in the world would ever phase her again.
“I like the sound of that.” She hummed softly. “She loved you, you know.” Ellie reminded him softly. “Always asked if I was hanging out with you enough.” A soft, sad, chuckle escaped her lips. “I don’t think I’ve said this enough… You saved our life, Danny. Bringing us in, taking care of us. Thank you isn’t enough…”

Standing there, Daniel Wright was overwhelmed to lengths he hadn’t been in a long time. He was thinking about one too many things at once..wanting to console his friend right here and learn everything there was to know about what had happened, but she must have seen the hurt in his eyes..because the next thing he knew –the next thing that he could possibly pay the slightest attention to, was the confession that came next. She assured him of what he’d feared and she told him how she felt, erasing the frown that had taken shape across his features and turning it into shock for a few moments as those hands came up to frame the sides of his face.
“I love you too, Ellie..I love you so much it hurts.” he blabbered as soon as some of that shock melted away. And yes, you best believe he leaned in to capture her lips in a kiss..clumsy and confused, but real..more real than anything else. There was still a lot to get over, to process..and quite frankly, to do..but he couldn’t stand there and pretend her words meant nothing. That he hadn’t hoped to hear her say that ever since the scout had walked into their lives again…and to think he had almost lost hope there for a second. How wrong he had been. “..jesus. Were you tryin’ to kill me just there..?” he chuckled, “I swear I thought I’d lose you all over again.” Fuck no. He wouldn’t have let that happen. “Alright, w-what do we do now..?”
Despite the fact that she had confessed first, Ellie was still amazed that he reciprocated. That he felt the same way. As if she was almost expecting him to say he didn’t. Because her confession wasn’t intended to get him to admit it too--it was merely expressing her own feelings. Which was all she had been thinking about. As selfish as that sounds, she hadn’t thought about him loving her back. At least not with the immensity that she did. “Really?” A surprised laugh escaped her lips, before they were captured by his. Her hands slid down his jaw, as she brought her arms up over his shoulders. Her body pressed against his, and she kissed him back. As if this was the first time she had kissed his lips. Her stomach fluttered with butterflies, and goosebumps rose along her skin. A soft giggle bubbled up her throat at his words, and she pulled back enough to look him in the eyes. “No more hurt…” She said. They had been through too much of it, and it didn’t become them. They were meant for moments like this. God, it looked so good on them. “I love you.” She blurted again. “It feels so good to finally say it--” She laughed. “I love you I love you I love you.” Punctuating her words with a quick kiss, she leaned back to look at him again. “Anything we want.”

Ellie nodded slowly as he spoke, willing the burning behind her nose to stop. She didn’t want to cry. Not tonight. She had done enough of that over the past week. As awful as it might sound, she had been trying her hardest to convince herself that her mother was in a better place. That she was happier now. That she could be in gardens just like this one for eternity. Funny, she had never believed in an afterlife. At least, not until now. Maybe, she thought, that’s how people grieved. By believing that their loved ones were still okay. By loving them harder.
“Yeah….” Ellie had been mumbling softly. Until his last question. “What—no—“ She shook her head. “Of course I meant to…” The brunette was suddenly overwhelmed with guilt, unable to find the proper words to explain to him that she did not, in fact, use him for sex. Hazel eyes turned stern as she reached a hand up to cup his face in her small hands—making sure he heard every word she was saying. “Danny, you are… everything.” Her voice was breathy and low. And her eyes, which she’d tried her best to keep dry, were brimming with tears. “I… am so in love with you, Danny. I tried to ignore it and tell myself that you deserve better than me—and you do, I know—but I can’t help it. I love you. I’ve loved you forever.” The words flow out of her like a waterfall, pooling around in the silence around them. A weight she’d been carrying around, dropping, finally.
elliexmay:
As if being pulled by magnets, her hand automatically lifted to his without much thought. Her fingers slid along his, and she took a step closer to him. This whole time, she hadn’t been able to say the words out loud. But something about the softness in his eyes, and the firmness of his hand beneath hers made her feel protected. Safe. Like she could say anything in the world without judgement. It took her a moment to find her voice, and when she finally did, it was soft. “Nora’s dead.”
Her dear mother whom had suffered for far too long. She hadn’t been herself for longer than Ellie could remember. It had been years since she’d seen her smile or even speak without being prompted. Maybe that’s why Ellie hardly felt a difference. Living with someone who had been dead inside for so long, she hardly knew what she was missing anymore. “I think she.. may have overdosed. Or maybe she mixed medications she shouldn’t have… I don’t know.” Ellie sighed. “She was in a lot of pain. And she’s not anymore.”
Okay. Maybe he was expecting her to tell him that sleeping together had been a mistake..that they couldn’t fall for that anymore, but this? Daniel felt a sudden numbness hit him the second the news did, his eyes widening for a fraction of time before he noticed his hand squeezing Ellie’s…hard. “No–nora? Your mom, Nora is…wait.” he huffed, shaking his head. “Wow.” He had seen..asked about her just a couple of weeks ago, maybe less, and he didn’t have the slightest clue she had passed until now. “I’m so sorry, Ellie..I can’t even -I can’t even process.” Daniel rose his hand, gently cupping it against the scout’s jaw.
Listening to the rest of it felt weird, but it filled in what he had thought about asking, and so all that was left to do was what he did next, head shaking lightly. “..you’re right about that.” he frowned, “..hold on, is that why you were actin’ the way you were, that night? Did you..mean to sleep with me?”

With a nod, Ellie straightened up, stepping around him towards the door. Goosebumps formed on her hand when she brushed it against his, inviting him to follow her. Her drink sat, neglected at the bar, as she moved away, weaving herself through the crowd. Walking with heels wasn’t something she was used to doing. And it definitely wasn’t something she wanted to try again. But she had to admit, she was enjoying feeling beautiful in them.
As she pushed the back door open, she found herself walking into the cool night air. The light breeze blew strands of short hair across her face, and she reached up to brush it away. She followed a brick pathway between tall bushes, and eventually found herself in the middle of a botanical garden. The moonlight reflected on the water pouring into a grand fountain in the middle of the garden. It seemed…unfair, almost. That she had always been a few miles from here but had never dreamed of such a place. “Wow. This is beautiful.” She breathed, turning to smile at Daniel, who—as it turns out—was a better sight than the garden itself.
Daniel wasn’t sure where he was following her to, but as it was often the case with her..none of that mattered. Truth is he would have followed her anywhere but it he’d be lying if he said he wasn’t nervous this time around. Whatever she was going to say, it had to be important…so he was thankful for the little summer breeze that greeted the both of them as they walked into that garden.
He breathed it in, letting it pool into his lungs and looked up at her from time to time, unable to help himself..until she halted her step, that is. They seemed to have found themselves a pretty secluded spot, the bushes and the trees and the flowers around them creating a special atmosphere. Not to mention there was a freakin’ fountain there. “..it is.”he huffed at her affirmation, more so marvelled by the sight of her.. This Harley had to have known what he was doing picking this house. But enough of that..
As Wright looked up, he reached out for her hand and sighed, “What’s going on, El?”

“It’s definitely different.” She agreed, gesturing to the crowds. This was absolutely out of their realm. She wasn’t sure she had ever been to a party, much less dressed up for one. She didn’t even know what to do with herself here. But she pretended anyway. It was kind of a template of her life, in a way. Always just slightly out of place. There and not there at the same time. But his words, like every time, grounded her. Brought her back to a place where she felt she belonged. “Thanks.” A soft, nervous giggle escaped her lips. The compliment made her feel more confident in her appearance.
The brunette’s smile faltered slightly, a pang of guilt rocking through her gut. “Yeah… we should probably talk.. about that.” She nodded her head towards the door. “Wanna go somewhere a little more quiet?”
Daniel smiled slightly and shook his head as if to let her know it was the truth, ready to come even closer, if possible. He didn’t want her to feel like she couldn’t wear that sort of thing…even if they always happened to just wear plain jeans and a t-shirt to do their job on the daily. She deserved to have fun..and ever since she’d come back, he hadn’t seen her do much of what the old Ellie would have done.
Leaning onto the bar, the scout meant to say something himself about their last time together, but by the looks of it she beat him to it. He knew talking was the right thing, but why did it feel daunting all of a sudden? “..oh, you mean about..us?” he swallowed, “Yeah..I mean, sure..I’ll follow you.”

Just as her drink was placed in front of her, a familiar voice tore her attention away from drinking. A voice she would recognize, even in a crowded room with hundreds of different sounds circling around her. Neglecting the glass, Ellie’s head turned towards the voice, hazel eyes lighting up instantly at the sight of Daniel. Her Daniel. Could she call him that? “Hey stranger,” She blushed slightly, reaching up to tuck her hair back behind her ear. “It was a last minute decision, I just… needed a change of scenery.” Shrugging her shoulders as she smoothed down the part of her dress that barely covered her thighs. Truth be told, she may have been avoiding him. They had had an amazing night together and she knew that she owed him a better explanation for what happened. There were so many things she wanted to say to him, but this hardly felt like the time or place for some of them. She wouldn’t even know where to start, to be completely honest. “I missed you.” She admitted, after a pause, taking a small step closer to him.
Daniel saw the shot-glass and he saw her, hesitant but somehow happy to see him, and couldn’t resist falling into a small trance. He just wondered what she’d gone through, what she hadn’t told him..but even he realized this was not the place for that. Smiling at the way she called him stranger instead, Wright looked down with a nod, “..I see. It’s a bit ..crazy in here but I’m sure it works.” Crazy meaning..people everywhere, partying their asses off..and he didn’t even want to think about the other stuff he’d seen too. And he paused, top teeth sinking into his bottom lip. “..you look incredible, by the way.” Clearly.
But tipsy as he was, Daniel couldn’t have missed the way she just said those last two words..and had to ask. “Me too..where were you?” he asked gently, moving a step nearer. “..I thought you probably needed the space, but ..are you feelin’ any better?”

Daniel Wright had got lost within the crowd before, but this time…well, let’s just say he felt a bit screwed. The car was nowhere to be found and neither was any of the people he had come here with..but for some reason, through bumping and apologizing, he finally found the bar. And something else.
As he looked up, still somewhat hazy from the booze earlier, his green eyes landed on the dress first..followed by the legs and then, just as he unconsciously stepped forward, her fa—damn. “Why who are you and what have you done with Ellie?” he asked in her direction, completely ignoring the fact that he had barely seen her for the past week. “..you should’ve told me you were interested in comin’ here. I would’ve given you a ride.”
Just as her drink was placed in front of her, a familiar voice tore her attention away from drinking. It had been 10 days since her mother died. 10 days that felt more like a month, or a year. In any other circumstance, it would've been embarrassing for her to admit it--but Ellie had spent most of the past week asleep. And she was feeling astonishingly well-rested. And extremely guilty about it. Perhaps that was why she was avoiding everyone she knew back at the hideout. Perhaps, to run away from her own guilt, she morphed into someone else. Someone who wore a dark red dress and tall, strappy heels. Someone who took the time to put on makeup and cut her hair just above her shoulders. Maybe it was stupid of her to go to this party. But for once in her life, Ellie wasn’t afraid. So she held her head high as she moved past a few bodies towards the bar, and ordered herself a shot of tequila.
