Outlast 2 Update Will Balance Normal Difficulty, Game Is Already Profitable
Red Barrels announced today that Outlast 2 “has been a tremendous success,” and development costs were recouped in the first week of release.
After looking at the feedback from players, and realizing “perhaps they were a little too sadistic,” Red Barrels has created a new Outlast 2 update that will adjust the difficulty in key spots on Normal (Hard and Nightmare are unaffected). “On Normal difficulty this will offer players a more appropriately balanced experience (ie scary as $#&!) while still maintaining higher levels of challenge on Hard and Nightmare difficulties,” they said. The update is now live on PC, and is coming soon to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Here’s a look at the patch notes for the PC version of the update:
Global re-balancing of the game difficulty.
Microphone no longer uses extra batteries.
Increased the size of subtitles.
Fixed an issue where flickering black squares appear in the center of the screen at some specific resolutions.
Fixed an issue with alternate controller mappings and the camcorder UI.
Fixed an issue with double doors where one of them is locked.
Fixed an issue causing lost save games when Steam somehow fails to initialize.
Fixed some heretic sound effects.
Fixed multiple minor gameplay issues (collisions, crawling, tutorials, etc.)
Fixed multiple rare crashes.
Fixed an issue on Intel HD 4000 cards where most dynamic lights were missing.
Added a “-refreshrate 60” command-line parameter to specify a preferred refresh rate (replace 60 by the desired refresh rate).
Added a “-notexturelimit” command-line parameter to remove texture size limits based on VRAM amount.
Added a “-borderless” command-line parameter to use borderless fullscreen and not have to edit INI files.

Somewhere Beyond The Stars
Prey begins slowly, in appropriately sedated fashion, as scientist Morgan Yu awakens in an upper-class apartment. There’s a sense of fuzziness there, an inexplicable unease that something is not right. Turns out the feeling isn’t misplaced. After a trippy introduction, Prey thrusts you headfirst into its world, where merciless monsters called Typhon roam the research-focused Talos-1 space station, tearing the inhabitants to pieces. Suddenly you find yourself in the position of having to keep these aliens from getting off the station—at any cost.
Prey is concerned with who Morgan Yu is, and the game lets you choose nearly every facet of their person, including gender, skills, and even morality. The best parts of Prey often stem from how Yu interacts with other people. Is he or she sympathetic toward coworkers? Would Yu risk life and limb for them? What about humanity? And how does our scientist interact with brother Alex Yu, the man in charge of these experiments? Prey lets us decide the answers to these questions just as much as it lets us determine how Yu confronts the Typhon monsters running around Talos-1.
Talos-1 is a massive place: not just structurally, but also emotionally and politically. Crew members, both living and dead, are well-realized with personalities that make them more than just fodder. They have full names; they fight, they bicker, they have office romances—they even play Dungeons and Dragons! What could otherwise be a generic horror setting feels real thanks to clever writing and solid voice-acting, and it helps drive home what’s at stake for Yu and company.
The Typhon are a terrifying foe to go up against. Even the weakest enemies, mimics, are frightening because they have the ability to camouflage themselves as ordinary objects in the environment. See a health pack conspicuously on the floor in the middle of a boardroom? Better smack it with a wrench first to make sure it’s not a beast in hiding. The enemies become more unnerving as Prey goes on, introducing shadowalkers capable of setting you on fire and massive, floating Typhon that can shut down your equipment and make heads literally explode.

In spite of how interesting the set-up and enemies are, the early hours of gameplay are sluggish. Morgan is not a super-powered human (yet) but instead a scientist that these bullet-sponge monsters can kill in a few hits. Until you start upgrading your stats by modding your body with neuromods—Prey’s equivalent of level currency—your best bet is to stick to the shadows, collecting supplies and audio recorders, lest you want to get torn to shreds. For these two hours, I found the combat to be dull and that the upgrades, which bestow typical strength and health buffs, were bland.
However, about a third of the way through Prey, you unlock the ability to spend your neuromods to acquire Typhon powers. The abilities run the gamut from telekinesis blasts that will fling enemies across the room to the power to turn yourself into a mundane object in the environment, like a coffee mug, in order to hide from enemies or access hard to reach places. From these abilities emerge Prey’s interesting take on the Play Your Way formula. Not only are the powers fun to experiment with in and out of combat, but there are also interesting narrative consequences to using them.
With every neuromod Morgan uses, the character becomes less human. Use enough and the station’s turrets, so helpful in the earlier segments of the game, will turn against you and you’ll find intermittently yourself stalked by the Nightmare, a Nemisis-esque behemoth that can kill you in one swipe.
The overarching plot itself isn’t as noteworthy as the emergent story that emerges from your abilities but it’s made more interesting by the fact that your choices carry weight. Talos-1’s remaining residents often have requests or are in danger. How you interact with them determines how Morgan’s story ultimately plays out in the branching conclusion. Do you take the time to save some crewmates, marching halfway across the station to do so, or do you save your ammo and time and focus on the task at hand? There are a lot of missions like this, asking you to make value judgments about the lives of your crew, the mission at stake, and your own survival. I was surprised at how well I was pulled into the fantasy of being Morgan, having to juggle the needs of the world versus my own, while also navigating Morgan’s complicated relationship with Alex.
Prey’s impressive narrative execution makes its shortcomings easier to bear, but it doesn’t erase them. While the combat did improve substantially once I was able to use Typhon powers and gain cool weaponry (like a grenade that creates a small Black Hole), I never escaped the feeling that I was chipping off squares off a health meter when I went up against foes. There’s also a lot of backtracking, especially if you do side missions, and while those occasions aren’t too annoying in themselves, they do hammer home that the space station isn’t as visually diverse as it could be.
In spite of being rough around the edges, Prey still managed to consistently impress and even occasionally hit me with a sense of wonder. Sections that had me floating around the exterior of the Talos-1 in zero-G were tense, as I explored massive hull breaches for supplies like a treasure hunter, and I loved experimenting with the Gloo Gun, using it not only to immobilize enemies but also to plug up holes spewing fire and to build bridges across chasms.
In Morgan Yu, Prey invites us to create a fascinating and complicated protagonist navigating a dangerous world filled with characters worth knowing. Arkane’s fusion of player-driven storytelling and flexible gameplay remains strong throughout its first sci-fi outing, and makes Prey a stellar horror adventure in spite of a handful of flaws.

Russia Will Not See An Episode Of The Simpsons That Spoofed Pokemon GO
An episode of The Simpsons that aired in the USA not too long ago contained a very blatant reference to the Pokemon GO mobile game. However, one country in particular is not pleased about the episode, and it has resulted in a refusal to air the episode there. Russian TV station 2×2, which airs The Simpsons, cancelled their airing of the episode, which is called “Looking For Mr Goodbart”. The reasoning they gave is that they say the episode “could compromise the network and cause controversy”.
The criticism is related to a scene in the episode where Homer Simpson heads into a church to search for “Peekimons” for his mobile game “Peekimon Get”. This is controversal in Russia because of similarities to an incident in September 2016 where a Russian blogger, Ruslan Sokolovsky, was arrested for playing Pokemon Go in a St. Petersburg church. Sokolovsky’s trial, based on charges of “insulting the feelings of believers”, is currently ongoing. He could face a potential 3-5 year prison sentence. Because of this, the majority of the criticism directed towards the episode came from church officials, including archpriest Andrei Novikov and officials from the Russian Orthodox Church, whom were quoted by Russian news agency TASS. This criticism is what ultimately led 2×2 to refuse airing the episode.

Good games done slow
There are a lot of books in the Finch mansion. Books on the shelves. Books on the floors. Books on chairs. Books over doors. If you find your way into the kitchen – if you find it by fighting your way past stacks of books, naturally – you’ll find that there are books all over the kitchen, too. I don’t remember checking the sink, but there are books everywhere else, piled on work tops and spread over counters.
On my second visit to the Finch mansion I came with a camera. I was playing on Steam rather than my first runthrough on PS4, and I was screenshotting anything that leapt out at me – and in a game like What Remains of Edith Finch, almost everything leaps out. One thing I quickly noticed on this trip was that the Finches have a lot of copies of Gravity’s Rainbow. No harm there. I have one or two in my own house, which is nowhere near as rambling or unpractical as the Finch place, where a book can be laid down only to go permanently missing, so I don’t doubt that they might have picked up quite a few – particularly with all that coming and going.
But jeepers, they have a lot of copies of Gravity’s Rainbow. And a lot of copies of some other books too: a lot of Infinite Jest, a lot of The King in Yellow. This was a pleasant revelation. I didn’t feel I’d spoiled anything. I didn’t feel, in some strange way, that I was diminishing the achievement of What Remains of Edith Finch. I just felt like I’d discovered one of the many tricks no doubt employed when filling out this miraculous game’s miraculous world. Someone put all those books on all those shelves. Sometimes, they had to copy a few books to pad things out. They probably went back, over the course of development, to make sure the arrangement was aesthetically satisfying, and to make sure that you never got a cluster of Pynchon or a motherlode of DFW. I also just like to imagine the moment of creation: a 3D artist, sat before the monitor, making books, making books.

Puzzle-Adventure Game Seasons After Fall Releases on May 16 for PS4 & Xbox One
Hand-drawn puzzle-adventure game Seasons After Fall is releasing on May 16 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Swing Swing Submarine has announced. It was released last year on Steam, where it’s priced at $14.99 USD.
“As a wild fox, you are sent on a perilous journey aided only by your ability to change the seasons at will. Pounce through a wondrous land governed by magic and nature, dancing with the elements as you dynamically switch between the seasons,” Game Designer William David said. For example, winter freezes waterfalls, spring rain raises water levels, summer causes plants to grow and extend, and fall causes mushrooms to bloom, creating new platforms in the process.
David went on to confirm that Season After Fall includes a Platinum Trophy, but “there is no specific support or additional features when playing on a PS4 Pro.”

New Texture Pack for Turok 2: Seeds of Evil adds 400 new high-resolution textures
Modder ‘grabeskuehle’ is currently working on a Texture Pack for Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, and released the first beta version of it. The modder aims to stay close to the game’s original vision and is creating his own set of 2048×2048 phototextures.
As of now, a lot of places from the first four worlds have been retextured. As such, this Texture Pack is still in beta phase. In its next versions, grabeskuehle will replace the remaining textures in the first 4 worlds, will work on the last two levels, and will replace the textures for character/enemy models and weapons.

Woah Dave! Successor Space Dave! Is Coming To Nintendo Switch
Space Dave!, the spiritual successor to Woah Dave!, is coming to Nintendo Switch. According to developer Choice Provisions, the game will soon be released on Nintendo’s latest console – though a specific launch date has yet to be announced. Space Dave! tasks you with defending your ground against an alien onslaught by protecting your terrain from their endless arsenal of weapons. If you manage to survive long enough, you might be able to build up your own arsenal and collect enough power-ups to turn the tides against your would-be alien captors.
