San Francisco likes banning things
The city banned the sale of cigarettes at pharmacies, with an exception allowing supermarkets with a pharmacy to continue selling cigarettes. Walgreens, a pharmacy chain, complained the supermarket exception was unfair, and a court agreed. San Francisco modified the law to remove the exception for supermarkets.
Like in the rest of California smoking is banned in restaurants and bars, in San Francisco smoking is also banned in parks, taxis, transit stops, cab stands, ATM lines, farmers markets and common areas of residential buildings.
Here are some more things banned by San Francisco:
Plastic bags from grocery stores
Sitting or lying on city sidewalks from 7am until 11pm
Cat declawing
Happy meals
Eating and drinking on public transit
Bans under consideration:
Unsolicited delivery of Yellow Pages
Circumcision of boys
Sale of pets except fish
Bottled water
Freakonomics asks What Will San Francisco Ban Next?
Update: The Washington Times is keeping track, they list more things banned by San Francisco.
