it's a sci-fi with time-travel that revolves around 12yo girls on bikes from the 80s and yk as someone who was a 12yo girl three years ago i can confirm it does suuuch a good job at portraying tween female friendships

three out of the four protagonists are black, chinese, and ashkenazi & in the comic two of them are confirmed to be queer & in the show one is confirmed queer and one is implied (not queerbaiting i promise it was cancelled after one season bc it didn't have enough viewers)

the comic goes into mac's internalized homophobia a lot and the show does a good job with addressing the racism/antisemitism erin, tiffany, and kj faced as minorities in the 80s

i was looking at the reviews on the back of my copy of the comic and even critics agree that it's the same kind of teenage 80s adventure vibe as stranger things and the goonies and such!!!!!!

in short i'm hijacking this post to spread my paper girls agenda (sorry op) YOU SHOULD ALL READ/WATCH PAPER GIRLS

everytime someone says, no matter if they're a mileven or a byler, "it's just a ship, we don't have to fight over it" my whole brain just explodes. no, it's actually not just a ship. do you know many gay movies and series are out there, that have queer people, that are not explicitly about queer people? i don't know any. and you're gonna go now "oh, but there's heartstopper, and call me by your name and other stuff" but with these there is from the beginning on clear that there are gonna be queer characters. they're romantic series and movies, if you watch these, you're watching for queer people falling in love. i've never in my whole life seen a sci-fi movie with queer people. i've never seen a thriller with queer people. i've never seen an action movie with queer people. so, it's not "just a ship". if they're canon, it's gonna be big and important

I'm realizing that the new antisemitism - "we love Jews, but hate Zionists" - smacks of deep similarity to the way Evangelicals treat gay people. The hypocrisy is staggering.

It's like those people who say they "love the sinner, but not the sin." They don't hate gay people, but they hate when we live self actualized lives, and they call that "shoving our sexuality down their throats." They clearly hate us, but they insist rhetorically that they LOVE us, just hate our sinful behavior. But everyone knows those people are homophobic.

It's like those churches that have the "🏳️‍🌈 All Are Welcome" banner out front, but once you're inside you find out they won't let you join their clergy or get married by them or be open and proud - the "acceptance" was a ploy to get you in the door so they can make you MORE Christian - and consequently, LESS gay. Which is not welcoming. It is homophobic.

This is how American Leftists treat Jews. They pretend to love us, while openly espousing their hatred toward us, couched carefully in "but I'm ALLOWED to hate you if I say it like this, and if you disagree, youre oppressing ME." It's why they always say "it's not antisemitic to criticize Israel" as a defense for something they said that WAS biased and hateful towards Jews.

They pretend we are welcome, but it turns out that thin, performative welcome is conditional on our behavior and indeed on our subservience. Letting us in was only a ploy to make us more like them and less ourselves, they are not interested in us being present AND our authentic selves. It is not the welcome of diversity that the Left proudly promises, it is the familiar false welcome of assimilation.

The Western Leftist/Liberal/Progressive relationship to Jews is deeply Christian: we will pretend to tolerate you while openly ridiculing and hating you. We will deny you the rights that we enjoy, while claiming that you also wanting those rights is a sin. We will only allow your presence if you are becoming more like us: if you act true to yourself, we will call it sinful. But we aren't antisemitic. We're just criticizing Israel.

I generally try to call people by the name they introduce themselves as, even if (as in this case) they are absolutely terrible people. Mostly because I want other people to know I’ll extent the same courtesy to them.

i love how much we theorize on byler tumblr, but guys…i don’t think lettergate is just a theory anymore…

i mean. mike canonically called will? and he didn’t know? “joyce has this telemarketer job, mike’s always whining about it” or whatever dustin says. and he couldn’t call el bc of government surveillance, so he wrote her letters. so if he couldn’t call will, why wouldn’t he write will letters?

and of course, [tender, emotional music] is called Letter to Willy. that has to be seen as bigger proof than it is??

and will, the artist, made mike a painting. so why wouldn’t mike, the writer, write something for will?

alternatively to lettergate, what if the letter isn’t actually a letter? what if it’s a present, the same way will painted a dnd campaign…what if mike wrote one? as a gift? that would certainly explain this:
