I keep seeing people saying Mood Ring is satire and that apparently Lorde said that somewhere too, but I genuinely just thought it was about being high lol
She dubbed this as her ‘weed’ album, so…is she mocking the Instagram bohemian lifestyle or not?

(I feel like this is a really long response. I’m not coming for you/attacking, I just thought it might be interesting to share thoughts)
A lot of my response to this is kinda ‘all in your interpretation’ - my family didn’t enjoy the film while I love it.
With the plot diagram, there are more than just that structure to stories. The idea of rising action and climax is one type, and with snippets of life type plots, they’re structured differently. The characters had things going on to resolve, it’s a story about identity, people following that in different ways/with different struggles. As an overall plot, it can seem flat, but that’s cos it’s not plot driven, it’s character. I get why people can find that boring/less-than-appealing, but personally I enjoy stories told like that.
The beach thing, again, yeah, it can feel weird but it’s a physical representation of the final song. In the lyrics of Finale, Usnavi breaks down exactly how the streets around him can equate to the beach in a place he never even knew based on idealised expectations of it. Revealing that from the start he’s on the beach is the movie telling the audience from the start that Usnavi finds his home, establishing it as a key theme. By revealing that he never left at the end shows the growth he’s been through as a character, no longer dreaming of a green light far away, but seeing that home isn’t just a place, but the people, and the feelings.
By changing the order in the movie, Abuela’s death does lose some of its impact, but still. The death wasn’t about an audiences attachment to her, it was about the characters around her. And, as you said, so many relatives are right now. (I’m not sure if you meant in the movie or in real life rn, but I’m lowkey gonna go with both) You don’t need to know the person who died to understand how grief feels. In real life, so many people have lost family members the past two years, so if you know that pain, you get it and seeing it on a screen - you’re gonna feel for the characters.
In relation to the film, yes, a lot of characters have already lost family members, but that’s part of it. Someone who cared for them through those losses is now gone, someone who is also the representation of past/dual-identity in the area. The neighbourhood is dealing with the threat of gentrification, and as one of the eldest and most prominent figures in the community, losing her feels like losing the battle of preservation, and means there’s no more stories to escape into, as the character who tells most of them. Usnavi now has to tell his own (hence opening etc)
Again, not meant as an attack, I just saw your post and kinda wanted to share my own thoughts on it
me pretending to be a movie critic
I saw the in the heights movie today. As a person who had never listened to the music in advance. Was no one gonna talk about how flat and nothing the story is. Compared to a plot diagram it had no rising action or climax. I feel like a lot of the beginning part where they pretended they were on a beach only to be like ooh guess what we aren't actually on a beach was wack. Then they killed the old lady but we weren't attached to her at all so it had no weight and I felt like ok this lady is dead but so is everyone's relatives so who cares. The person in the movie theater started crying during that part so good on her? I do applaud it for diversity but it feels like that was the only point of it and it didn't have much else going on. Don't attack me in the heights and Lin Manuel Miranda stannies
