okay so this is pretty tenuous, even by my standards (and i concocted a whole theory based off the use of ‘my dear’), but here goes: obviously lucy’s arrival and eventual death signified a massive change in tone, and her arc words (‘there always has to be a choice’) have symbolic value, but the value is also...literal. and once lucy arrives, each member of the main cast has a significant choice: for lucy, it’s obviously her self-sacrifice, for wing it’s killing his father to save otto in rogue, for laura it’s deciding whether or not to remain at hive or go home, for otto it’s telling nero the truth about his and laura’s shared role in leaking the hunt coordinates/fighting back against animus/resisting the power surge that comes as a result of downloading the internet/etc (seeing as he’s the official protag and lucy’s love interest, he gets a lot, which makes sense), for nero it’s keeping anastasia alive and forcibly reconciling with his father, for raven it’s trading herself for the entire alpha stream....

and as you’ve probably noticed, there’s one notable exception here. shelby hasn’t faced a hard decision...ever, and the last time she faced any real individual trauma was the overlord protocol. so if book 9 comes - and yeah, at this point it is an if - i think shelby is going to have to make a very difficult, plot-important choice and i feel like it’s going to relate back to penny. because lucy’s right: there always has to be a choice, and while she meant that in a positive way, it has far more ominous undertones when it comes to shelby’s book 9 fate.

hopefully i’m wrong, because i adore shelby and don’t want anything to happen to her, but it’s where i see the wind blowing.

something that never fails to get me is how much pop culture the core four will have missed out on by the time they graduate. they joined hive before the last harry potter book was published, they missed twilight getting popular, they missed the scene/rawr xD random humour subculture, they missed YOUTUBE, the switch from flip phones to smartphones, etc....do you think laura saw nero with an iphone one day and was like ‘hey what the fuck’?? anyway i say this because i’d love to introduce wing to tiktok and explain miku binder jefferson to him because i think he’d implode x

if hive had movie adaptations they’d be rated pg-13 (because of the violence), meaning that each book would get a single ‘fuck’. anyway my nomination for book 1 is this scene:

“A guard ran back out of the door and across the cavern floor, dropping his rifle as he fled. Another guard soon followed and then two more, all running across the cavern floor as if their lives depended upon it. The cavern fell silent. No more shots rang out, nor was there any sign of the other members of the security team. Nero flipped his Blackbox open.

‘Chief, what the hell fuck is going on down there?’ Nero demanded.

‘As soon as I know, you will, sir,’ the chief replied. In the background Otto could hear people yelling.”

i have no idea how to format this cohesively so i’m just gonna word vomit these parallels up and then maybe if we’re lucky i’ll clarify it after i’ve slept:

•wing’s faux-death in the overlord protocol was equivalent to raven watching dimitri die; lucy’s death in zero hour parallels tolya (in that, theoretically, otto could’ve saved her, but lacked a choice)

•raven choosing to let trent die of animus instead of letting the colonel shoot him = otto making matt ronson die in a plane crash instead of letting raven shoot him

•mysterious parentages - i also think walden will subvert things a little with raven by having her be elena’s kid and not nero’s (like how otto was number one’s clone and not his bio son)

•talents: for raven it’s violence/her katanas, for otto it’s computers

•both have scenes where they refuse to give up on the other - for raven it’s in rogue, for otto it’s in zero hour and also deadlock (during the artemis project’s attack in italy)

•black hair blue eyes/white hair blue eyes (and that’s on yin yang luvs x)

•only raven could tell the difference between otto and zero; only otto could immediately tell that raven was under animus

•obviously they’re both animus survivors

•otto’s hope training/raven’s glasshouse training

•otto’s zero hour nightmares/raven’s hallucinations (and technically the aftershock flashback)

•both are incredibly self-sacrificing

•raven literally says they were the same age when they went on their first missions el oh el

•that’s it for now ngl i came up with far more than i intended and this has not assuaged any of my book 9 fears for otto whatsoever
