Chapter 2: The Great King

Chip and Leafly sat down nervously when King Dedede came in, they both jumped.

“N-nice to meet you!”

“Y-yes, we are here to meet you, King Dedede… we come from Sunset Village, on the western edge of Popstar!”

Chip was so nervous, he couldn’t even look at the king, and kept his head down. King Dedede spoke in a cocky voice:

“There’s no need to be so nervous! It seems that you are worried about something.”

“Yes! There’s something we’d like to ask you, Oh Great King..”

Chip finally raised his head, and looked at Dedede.

“….what?”

After a moment of awkward silence, the two foreigners looked at each other, then the others at the castle. Leafly took out the portrait of the “dog” king, comparing it with the king in front of them.

“Uh… no way..”

Chip whispered, rubbing his eyes:

“Maybe something is wrong with my vision. He doesn’t look anything like the portrait…”

“Well mine seems fine… is this really King Dedede?”

King Dedede, ignoring what he knew was being said, leaned back on his throne and interrupted the two

“Sunset Village, you say? I’ve never heard of it. Where is it?"

Chip hesitantly explained:

“It’s far west here, in the quiet mountains.”

“Huh. Can’t believe my fame has reached even the most remote places, I'm impressed.”

“The portrait was carried by the wind, when all the villagers saw it, we discussed and thought that you’ll surely help us solve the village’s big problem.”

“Hm? What big problem?”

“That’s… well…”

The two started whispering to each other again.

“What should we do? He’s completely different from what we thought the Great King would look like.”

“But we’ve come all the way here. We can’t go home with nothing.”

“Yeah, you’re right. He may not look like the portrait, but he seems like a kind king.”

Chip turned to Dedede.

“Our place is pretty inconvenient. It’s far from everywhere else, so we can’t do any shopping."

Leafly continued:

“There was only one shop, a general store. It sold food, stationary, essentials, everything. But suddenly, the store closed down.”

“Hm? Well what happened?”

King Dedede asked, Chip replied:

“Well that’s because the owner, Oba-chan, left the village.. Oba-chan was nosy, but hardworking and nice. She dreamed of making her store more popular so the village would have more life…”

Leafly said sadly.

“She wanted us to help her reach her dream, but none of us have ever done work before, we didn’t want to bother her so we all refused. Oba-chan got fed up with our laziness, and left."

“I see, so your only store is gone.”

King Dedede nodded. Kirby, who has been listening to the conversation, spoke up.

“That’s terrible! We need to find a way to bring Oba-chan back…”

“Huh?”

King Dedede spoke in a sulky tone.

“Why are you here Kirby? This is my throne room, only I listen to the people’s wishes.”

But Kirby replied: “It looks like Chip and Leafly are in big trouble.. I want to help him too!”

“Well I don’t want your help! And what’s with the basket? You’re now bringing fish to my castle? Do you wanna sell some?”

“Oh, this..”

Kirby had forgotten that he was carrying a fishing basket.

“Oh no! I have to take this to Chef Kawasaki!”

“You don’t have to. Just bring it to the castle kitchen, the Waddle Dees can cook it for you.”

“I see, but I still want to try his new fish dish…”

Chip, who was listening to Kirby and King Dedede, looked puzzled.

“Fish dishes..? You can eat fish?”

Kirby spoke in shock.

“What?! You’ve never tried anything with fish?!”

Chip and Leafly looked at each other

“I wonder.. have we tried any?”

“Well, I remember that Oba-chan used to sell these crispy, pale fried foods. It was pretty light, so maybe..”

Kirby replied:

“… fried fish!”

“Also, munya… munyo…what was it again? I can’t remember the name, but there was another dish that Oba-chan specialized in. It was grilled in butter on a platter, and if she squeezed some lemon on it, it would be refreshing and delicious.”

“That’s fish meunière! I love that!”

Kirby nearly drooled as Chip and Leafly spoke in admiration.

“Oh yeah, that’s made of fish!”

“I had no idea! Come to think of it, she would often go out early in the morning with her fishing rod.”

“She must’ve been catching fish in the nearby river and cooking them for us, I never thought about that.”

King Dedede crossed his arms, and spoke in a stern voice.

“You’re all relying too heavily on that general store owner! You’re being too selfish, you better start working on your own from now on. Anyways, your audience with the King is now over.”

Chip and Leafly frantically clung onto Dedede.

“It’s already over?! Aren’t you going to solve all our problems?!”

“And we did, “work for yourselves”. That’s some great advice.”

“But…!”

Kirby replied.

“You can catch some tasty fish near your village!”

Leafly turned back to Kirby

“Eh? Well all the dishes Oba-chan cooked were delicious, I’m sure we can catch some delicious fish.”

“I’m going!”

Kirby yelled excitedly.

“I’m sure I’ll catch some new fish. And then, I’ll get Chef Kawasaki to come up with a new recipe!”

Kirby loved his new fishing rod, it made him obsessed with fishing. Chip spoke in a confused tone.

“Umm.. we I’m glad you want to join us but… we still need help to reopen the general store. Even if we go fishing, Oba-chan…”

Kirby replied:

“Of course I’ll help you get her back, not just fishing! We can come up with a plan.”

Chip and Leafly were smiling again.

“Really? Thank you! Oh right, we haven’t asked your name yet.”

“I’m Kirby.”

“Nice to meet you Kirby, we can show you around Sunset Village”

“Everyone will be excited to greet you! You’re our hero!”

Chip smiled warmly, almost hugging Kirby as he raised his hand happily,

“Well then, let’s do our best and bring back the general store owner! Whoo!”

“Oh!-”

As the three of them got excited, King Dedede began speaking seriously.

“…Of course, I was also about to head to your village. Kirby, don’t hold me back”

Seeing Kirby praised, King Dedede got anxious. At this point, Kirby might be known there as “the hero of Popstar”.

Kirby looked dumbfounded.

“What? But King Dedede, you said ‘work for yourselv’-”

“I never said that! I told you to hurry up and show me around, because I’ll take care of it. Come on, don’t hesitate, let’s go!”

Bandana Waddle Dee ran in a hurry towards King Dedede, who was already walking away with a stomp.

“Wait, your Majesty! I need to get everything ready. I also need to make lunch..”

“Oh, that’s right. Then get it done immediately! Sandwiches, omelettes, sausages, salisbury steaks, tonkatsu, and fried chicken for twenty people! And don’t forget the donuts and cream puffs for snacks.”

Kirby immediately shouted:

“I’ll be going to Chef Kawasaki’s! I’m gonna let him grill the fish I got and turn it into onigiri!”

“Hey, how clever! Let me have some too, Kirby!”

“Of course! Yay, onigiri… onigiri~”

Kirby hurriedly ran out of the throne room.

Chip and Leafly looked at each other.

“…it feels like we’re on a school field trip..”

“Are they okay?”

The group packed some lunches and plenty of snacks, before setting off for the far west village.

That's Chapter 2! Notes: 1. I will rewrite some text when I eventually translate the whole thing, for example the "pale fish" was described as "whitish" or "seriously" was originally "gravely". I'm using Google Translate for must of this so I hope I can find some good Japanese learning apps/sites. 2. I'm not sure if it's because this is a butchered translation or that's how Mie Takase wrote it, but Dedede is.. out of character but also not? Or he's trying to be serious to impress Chip and Leafly. Chapter 1: Guests From A Faraway Village

It’s a warm sunny day, ice cream shaped clouds floating in the sky. Kirby was walking down a peaceful path, humming a tune.

“Lalalala… lalalala! Fish, fish!”

Kirby was feeling great, after all, he caught a cage full of fish. And for why he did, it was a little while ago.

Kirby was invited by Chef Kawasaki to go fishing in the river.

“I’ve got a delicious recipe in mind, but first, I need to catch some fresh fish!”

Kirby was quite excited after hearing that, but neither of them were able to catch a single one.

“Hmmm.. these swordfishes are smarter than I thought! Well with no fish, I’ll have to put off those plans for now.”

Kirby was disappointed, and told the Waddle Dees about it. The most skillful among them came up to him, this Waddle Dee can make a lot of useful tools, so everyone calls him “Tool Shop Dee”. Tool Shop Dee gave Kirby a long, impressive fishing rod.

“Kirby, try this. It’s an excellent fishing rod that I invented. Just by dropping the line deep in the sea, fish will start jumping up and down. You should be able to catch a ton more!”

“Really? You’re giving this to me..?”

“Yes! Hope you catch some fish this time!”

“Wow! Thanks, Tool Shop Dee!”

So Kirby went fishing alone, pitching up a tent and working for several days until he caught a lot of fish.

“It really worked, Tool Shop Dee! You’re amazing! We gotta get Chef Kawasaki to make a dish right away!”

“Oh, great! I’ll have that delivered to Dedede Castle”

As Kirby was walking, thinking about his day, a pair of strangers came up to him. One of them had a large leaf growing on the top of its head. The other one had a pointy head and a bushy tail. When they noticed Kirby, they came up to him with a friendly smile.

“Um.. hi! Well, I just want to ask you something..”

The pointy one said.

“Hm? What is it?”

“That big castle over there is Dedede Castle.. Right?”

They pointed to Dedede’s Castle, which was built on top of a big hill.

“Yeah, that’s right!”

“You see, we wanna meet King Dedede. Are there any procedures you need to follow…?”

“Wait- what? Procedures?”

“Yeah, like filling in an application form or providing an ID. Besides, will I be turned away if I look like this? Do I have to wear expensive stuff or am I not allowed in?”

They looked troubled, but Kirby was dumbfounded.

“Application form..?? What’s that?.. You don’t need any of those, just go tell the Gatekeeper Waddle Dee that you want to see King Dedede and they’ll let you in!"

“What?! It’s that easy?!”

The two exchanged glances at each other and whispered excitedly.

“So King Dedede is just as kind as the rumors say, he treats all commoners with kindness!”

“I was pretty nervous, but now I’m relieved! Let’s get to the castle right away.”

Curiously, Kirby asked:

“Do you have any business with King Dedede?”

“Oh yeah. We have a favor to ask of the great King Dedede the Dog.”

“Dedede.. the Dog?”

“Yeah, this picture was carried by the wind and brought to our village. We knew that we needed to meet him, we can’t stay and wait any longer.”

The pointy one handed the picture, and Kirby’s eyes widened as he saw it.

“Huh? Who is this?’

It was a portrait. It had a joyful, caring gaze, narrow eyes, and a sharp firm mouth. It was a magnificent painting of a king. The leafy one said:

“You don’t know who the Great King is? There’s an explanation under the portrait, read it”

Kirby was stunned as he read the text aloud.

“‘King Dedede, the great dog-like ruler of Dreamland. His heart is more noble and kind than anyone else’s. It’s certain that King Dedede will solve all of the people’s troubles.’ This guy? Is King Dedede? That’s a lie…”

Kirby muttered in amazement.

Meanwhile, Bandana Waddle Dee just came out of the castle. He ran over to Kirby, waving his hand.

“Welcome back Kirby! How was the fishing?”

“Oh, Bandana..”

Kirby was planning to talk about the fishing trip, but that feeling quickly disappeared.

“What’s going on? This IS King Dedede?”

Kirby showed Bandana Waddle Dee the picture the two strangers showed him “Ah, yeah.. that’s a portrait of our Great King..”

“You’re kidding! That doesn’t look like him at all-”

Kirby tried to say that it didn’t look like him, but Bandana Waddle Dee quickly covered his mouth.

“There’s a reason behind this. I’ll explain it to you later.. umm, what about you guys?”

Bandana Waddle Dee looked at the duo behind Kirby, and the two introduced themselves.

“I’m Chip, and this leafhead is Leafly. We’re from Sunset Village in the far west.”

Leaf-headed Leafly continued:

“The truth is, our village is facing a big problem. We were all racking our brains for a solution, until this portrait flew by.”

Chip says:

“When we found out that Dreamland had such a wonderful king, we mustered up our courage to go and see him! But when we saw that magnificent castle, our legs gave up…”

Chip and Leafly looked up at the castle with sparkling eyes.

“We ran out without even thinking, so I was worried whether we would be able to even meet the King without any arrangements.. so I asked this guy!”

Chip pointed to Kirby, and Bandana Waddle Dee happily replied:

“Of course you can meet him. King Dedede is very generous, he’s willing to speak to any citizen and listen to their problems.”

“Bandana Dee-”

Kirby wanted to hear what was going on, but Bandana Waddle Dee quickly said:

“Anyways, let’s get to the castle. This way please.”

“Could you also show us around? That would be great!”

Chip and Leafly eagerly follow.

Bandana Waddle Dee put a lot of effort into the “Throne Room”, a place where King Dedede would listen to the citizens’ worries and requests. However, since only few would come to the king to consult their problems, it was usually a “rehearsal room” for the Waddle Dee Troupe to take music and dance lessons. Bandana Waddle Dee picks up the tambourines and castanets lying around while talking to Chip and Leafly.

“I will inform his Majesty the King. You two, please wait here in this audience chamber.”

“Y-yes..!”

“Wow, I’m so nervous!”

The duo sat on stiff chairs, as Bandana Waddle Dee and Kirby went out into the hallway. Kirby immediately asked:

“What’s going on? What’s with that weird portrait?”

“Well…”

Bandana Waddle Dee began to speak in a low voice.

Among the Waddle Dees, there are those with special skills. There’s “Tool Shop Dee” who made Kirby’s fishing rod, and others like “Writer Dee”. Each of them have a nickname like “Celebration Dee” or “Weapon Smith Dee”. Among them was one that was exceptional at drawing, nicknamed “Artist Dee”. King Dedede, noticing his talent, ordered him to paint him a portrait. Artist Dee, of course, was very happy. Using his paintbrush, he put his heart and soul to try painting a faithful reproduction of his beloved king. However, when King Dedede saw the finished portrait, he looked angry.

“What is this?! Are you saying that I’m dumb? Do you think I have such a stupid face?!”

Artist Dee trembled with fear.

“I don’t think you look stupid at all, Your Majesty! I’m just trying to express your greatness..”

”Well that’s completely wrong! Do it again!”

Artist Dee had no choice but to redraw the portrait. The leader of the Waddle Dee Squad, Bandana Waddle Dee, gave out a lot of advice.

“Well maybe the eyes shouldn’t look like round boiled eggs? It would be cooler if it was longer and cut a little bit.”

“Eh? But Dedede’s eyes are long and narrow..”

“That’s alright, it’s a work of art. It doesn’t have to exactly replicate the King. If it’s cool, I think it will still turn out great.”

Artist Dee was a little taken aback by Bandana Dee’s words, but nodded.

“Alright, I’ll do my best! I want to show the world how great and cool the King is. Time to express myself!”

King Dedede was very pleased with the new portrait. He even wrote the text below “The great dog-like ruler of Dreamland..” underneath it, and ordered the Waddle Dees to make numerous copies and scatter them all over Dreamland. They handed it out to all the residents, and of course there was a bit of an uproar.

“What’s this?! It looks too cool! That’s not King Dedede at all!”

“There’s too many changes… I don’t know who this is supposed to be!”

“This was made by Artist Dee? Maybe Dedede forced him to do it..”

That’s what was said on the streets. Well, King Dedede didn’t seem to mind at all, and continued to look at his own portrait with a grin on his face.

Kirby was surprised after he heard the story.

“I can’t believe something like that happened while I was fishing!”

Bandana Waddle Dee replied:

“I didn't think the portrait would be able to reach some faraway village. Anyways, we better let King Dedede know.”

Bandana Waddle Dee headed over to Dedede’s office (the banquet hall) with Kirby. King Dedede had just woken up from a nap and was half-asleep, but as soon as Bandana told the story, his eyes widened.

“What?! You’re telling me they saw the portrait?!”

“Yes, Your Majesty. It seems that something is bothering them, and they want you to solve it.”

“Alright! I can solve anything! I’ll show them my true power!”

King Dedede puts on a new robe, and heads off to the throne room.

And that's all of Chapter 1! I do have Chapter 2 in the works, but I still have school so when future chapters release is unknown :)

Description:

Kirby, Dedede, and the residents of Dreamland join forces to create a hot spring!

Kirby and his friends head for the deserted Sunset Village in the far west, where they are asked to restore the village back to life. Up in the mountains, they find a hot spring, and name it "Dream Onsen".

Together with the residents of Dreamland and the Co-Kracko who wandered in, they begin to to build a hot spring to revitalize the village!

The feast is ready, invitations are sent to Meta Knight, Daroach, and Elfilin, and the springs are open for business! But then, a big problem arises!

Time to protect Dream Onsen and the celebration party!
