Los Angeles, CA- Justin Bieber’s pal Lil Twist has dogged a marijuana DUI charge after a Los Angeles judge rejected the prosecution’s case because police took too long to collect a blood sample. Lil Twist, whose real name is Christopher Morris, was arrested last July driving one of Bieber’s luxury sports cars. Los Angeles police pulled him over for speeding-- he was driving 69 mph in a 30 mph zone--and failing to stop for a traffic signal. During the stop officers detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Lil Twist admitted to smoking weed a half an hour before he was pulled over and police found a partially smoked blunt in the center console of the car. The police report also noted that his eyes were bloodshot and his speech was “deliberate and lethargic,” according to TMZ. Lil Twist submitted to field sobriety tests which prosecutors allege he performed poorly on; he stumbled while doing the heel-to-toe test and swayed during the one-leg stand test. On their worksheet,

Atlanta, GA- People aren’t known for making sound decisions when they’re drunk, especially when you consider how many people get arrested for driving under the influence. Whether it’s the liquor or a lack of brain cells, some people do the dumbest things to get arrested for drunken driving and further prove they shouldn’t be behind the wheel in the first place. Last week in Louisiana, a 31 year-old man helped state police in Baton Rouge secure their easiest DUI arrest ever thanks to one not-so-smart local resident. Patrick Ruffner wanted to file a report about the hit-and-run accident he had been involved in around 3 a.m. Sunday morning. He called state police and was told to come down to the Troop and file the crash report, which he did 45 minutes later, the Times Picayune reported. There’s only one problem, he had been drinking that night and it was obvious to the officer who was helping him with the report. After meeting Ruffner in the parking lot to take his account, the trooper a

Rogersville, TN- Keila Rose Reed, a Rogersville woman who had been taking a host of prescription drugs before she caused a fatal DUI accident last year has been sentenced to nine years in jail. Reed, 29, pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and aggravated reckless assault in a Hawkins County Court Wednesday, the Times News reported. In addition to the jail sentence, Reed was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine and will have her license suspended for 10 years. On April 9, 2013, Reed was east near Hawkins Count Elementary School when she lost control and veered into oncoming traffic, slamming head-on into a car driven by 80 year-old Lucille L. Melton who had a 9 year-old passenger. Melton initially survived her injuries, but she died five days later at the Holston Valley Medical Center. Her young passenger suffered serious brain injuries. Immediately after the accident police has Reed’s blood drawn for chemical testing. According to arresting Officer Mark Cook, Reed, “had slurred speech, and

Montpellier, VT- As Americans are moving towards a broad legalization of marijuana, lawmakers across the country are taking preemptive steps to assure drugged driving doesn’t become the problem drunken driving is by introducing laws enhanced DUI-drug laws. Such is the case in Vermont, but a recently introduced drugged driving law is having trouble gaining traction because state legislators are concerned about infringing on drivers’ rights. The bill lawmakers are mulling, H. 501, would lower standard of proof necessary to convict a person of driving under the influence of drugs. Under current law, in order to secure a conviction for DUI-drugs, prosecutors must prove that the suspected drugged driver is unable to safely operate their motor vehicle. This standard, prosecutors say, allow many people to dodge charges because DUI attorneys are able to argue their clients may have been on drugs, but the state cannot prove they were driving unsafely, according to Valley News. But H. 105 wou

Austin, TX- Austin police are stand by their arrest of Larry Davis, an African- American man, who they believed was intoxicated, but as it turned out, was completely sober, and is now wrangling with an unjustified DUI arrest. Davis was arrested last January after he was initially pulled over for running a stop sign in Austin. Davis admitted to having one beer that night and fully complied with the officer’s demands. He submitted to field sobriety tests and performed well on the tests according to video footage. Austin police say Davis “swayed,” and “needed his arms for balance” when doing the one-leg stand test. In spite of there being no other signs of impairment, police handcuffed Davis and took him to the police station. While at the station, Davis submitted to a Breathalyzer which showed his blood alcohol was 0.0, which means if he didn’t have enough alcohol in his system to get a higher BAC reading, he wasn’t driving drunk. A blood test also revealed there were no drugs in  his

Atlanta, GA- The costs of a DUI/DWI go far beyond the actual money you have to spend, which can be upwards of 10K or more. Once a person has been convicted, the ramifications of a DUI/DWI don’t end with the penalties, they face other challenges and skyrocketing insurance premiums. The penalties which typically include community service, some type of alcohol assessment/treatment program and, for some offenders, a requirement they install ignition interlock devices can cost upwards of $10,000 or more. In most states, a convicted DUI offender will lose their license for at least thirty days and in many cases, the offender will not be able to drive from 90 days up to a full year. More than one DUI conviction and the offender could lose their license for longer. After a DUI offender has served their sentence and they are ready to begin driving again, they face the next big challenge, getting car insurance. Sometimes an insurance company will drop a customer who has been charged with a D

Miami, FL- A Miami man is facing up to 30 years in jail after prosecutors secured his conviction for an April  2012 drunken driving accident that left a 13 year-old girl dead. It took the jury three hours to convict Sandor Guillen, a physical therapist from Coral Gables for vehicular homicide, DUI manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident involving death, according to Miami Herald. The Miami-Dade County judge had Guillen taken into custody immediately for what the Miami-Herald described as “one of the most horrific accidents in South Florida history.” His exact sentencing date has not been set but should be within the next few months. Guillen was almost three times the legal limit when he plowed into a van carrying the Camacho family that April morning. Guillen slammed his SUV into the van with such force that it was torn in half. A cup holder from the van hit Kaely Camacho, 13, in the head, pierced her skull and she began to bleed profusely, according to CBS Miami. She was
