Alfred stares at the plaque dedicated to a boy freshly buried.

“‘A good soldier?’” he reads out.

Bruce’s eyes snap to meet Alfred’s. There is a disapproving lilt to Alfred’s question. One that swallows any petulance or lies that Bruce may dare dream up. That, in addition to his raised eyebrow, spells nothing but disappointment.

“I cannot-” Bruce starts. His words shudder and crack as he struggles to maintain composure.

Bruce stops.

“I could not call him ‘son,’” he tries again. “For a father would have saved his son, a father wouldn’t have let-”

“You sentence the poor boy to an eternity of solitude. Of service. I’m sure he would rather have a father who failed than no father at all.”

Bruce thinks back to a time before. Back to a too-skinny boy with cracked knuckles and raised haunches. “Would he?”

Thinking about Steph and Harley. Thinking about how neither will ever be anyone's first choice -- they will always be someone else's second fiddle. Thinking about how Steph changed and became a vigilante so her dad would stop doing crime. Thinking about how Harley starting doing crime so the Joker might change.

Thinking about Steph's realization that Tim might not be able to care for her in the way that she needs.

Thinking about Harley as she refuses to realize that the Joker might not be able to either.

Thinking about how in the end, they are sacrificed over and over to be a "lesson."

Joker dies bcs during his big dramatic speech of the day he tries to be be all insane and funny by pretending to shoot himself in the head with his BANG! flag gun but he fucks up getting distracted by flirting with Batman and mixes up his guns and he shoots himself in the face in front of the bats. Jason, who was being bodily held back from shooting him himself by Bruce and Dick for the past 15 minutes, laughs so hard he fractures a rib and has to be carried back to the batmobile

Jason: If I had a dollar for every ounce of rage I felt in my body after I read this text, I would have enough money to buy a cannon to fire at you

Barbara: Actually I did the math, Dick would have $225, not $0.15.

Steph: If I had a dollar I would buy a can of soda :)

Dick: while you’re there could you buy me an apply juice please

Steph: Sorry I only have a dollar

Dick: :(

Barbara: correction, Dick would have $22,500 because it's a dollar for every pixel, not a cent

Steph: If I had $22,500 I would buy a can of soda and an apply juice

Damian: You can buy anything you want with $22,500

Jason: Yeah and they want soda and apply juice

Dick: Apply juice to what

Damian: *Betrayed*

Alfred: *Too proper to gasp so loudly, but almost fumbles his antique feather duster*

Dick: Oh come on, it’s not that bad! It’s close, it’s relatively safe, and their PHDs are less likely to go rogue.

Jason: *Cover’s Damian’s ears as he backs them both out of the room, still loudly gasping in offense like the theater kid he is at heart*

Bruce: I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed.
