WHEN: 6.10.2022 WHERE: Silver Stars Drive-In  WHO: Drue Johannsen + open
Drue dreamed of days of driving a powered blue Mustang down the coastline, well, during the rare times dreaming was acceptable. The film had become a bore half-way through, she hadn’t even noticed the wonky projector had given out yet again. But she’d made her daydreams quite vivid. So, she was pissed when someone tapped her shoulder to let her know the drive-in was closing for the night.
“What?” she whipped around. “Oh. Jeez. I could birth a child faster than that thing could show a whole movie.”

Sutton’s eyes darted towards the clock that hung on the wall. They hadn’t realized how late it was. With a long drawn sigh, they stood up from their seat and glanced towards the other person. “ Have you eaten anything? I’m sure I can cook something for us. ”
.
At the mention of cooking, Drue was up in an instant. Anything qualifies as better than watching a clock. She just so happened to enjoy cooking, too. “Let me get my hands dirty, too. What’re you feeling?” Picking through a cupboard that she had to pay no expense for felt monumental on its own. She snatched the opportunity.

❝ would you PASS ME THAT? ❞
About time, Drue had wanted to say out loud, but not wanting to piss off another peer with a useless anecdote, she just passed over the mini-golf club. It was a real, full sized club, but it would have to do for the game of 8 holes she threw together this afternoon.
“Loser buys lunch,” she wagered with pride, knowing damn well she couldn’t afford to back her own bet.

i. If I keep myself at home I won't make the same mistake That I made for fifteen years I could be a new girl I will be a new girl
ii. I wish that this would go away But when I'm done singing this song I will have to find something else To do to keep me here Something else to keep me
iii. How do other people live? I wonder how they keep it up? When today is finally done There's another day to come Then another day to come Then another day to

[KAT GRAHAM, CISFEMALE, SHE/HER] — welcome to area x, DRUE JOHANNSEN! our records show that they are a TWENTY-NINE year old WATCHER in ZONE Z. though they are known to be BLUNT and CONTROLLING, don’t let that fool you. they are also ENTERPRISING and STEADFAST.
part one / background
Eldest daughter syndrome is a real thing. You become the replacement guardian, the family therapist, the resident chef, the homemaker all before you’re eighteen. But that isn’t out of the ordinary, because in your mind, you’ve been an adult since you were 8 years old. You take ‘old soul’ as a compliment. You’re on top of the world, feeling more advanced than any kid your age. Then, of course, everything shifts. No aliens or meteorites need be to flip Drue’s life upside down. She fell behind fast, as everyone around her seemed to excel.
She’d never spent much time away from school and home (which was about as exhausting as attending a 9-5), so when Drue finally took a moment to relax, it became an immediate addiction. Drue did not know how to pace herself and why should she, when she was never taught how? Failing class after class, she eventually became a high school dropout -- something not a single person could’ve expected of her. The little girl who read The Secret one summer and put every Ivy League on her vision board. That girl.
Things were kept together because of Drue and Drue alone. Even when the Johannsens were forced to relocate from their comfortable family home in Zone 2 to assigned housing in Zone 3. She watched her parents lose their valuable home, their jobs, their motivation altogether. Sometimes Drue thought maybe she would lose their love, too, if she didn’t work hard enough for it. What a hard existence it was, believing love is to be earned rather than unconditional. At twenty-nine years old, this remains the song and dance she participates in. Only now, she’s older, full of bitterness, and hopeless. Still at home, though. Unappreciated.
part two / headcanons
Hopeful Drue Johanssen is her birthname. For more reasons than one, she goes by Drue outside of her home. Her parents and younger brothers will always refer to her as Hope, though.
Everything and nothing interests Drue. Having spent most of her childhood figuring out the needs of others, she didn’t have a clue what she liked or needed herself. She tried out so many hobbies -- painting, dancing, accidentally killing every plant she owned, photography, the keyboard one afternoon. Nothing stuck. Either way, she’s definitely regressed to childhood ways and you may often find her setting up games of mini golf and cornhole during the hours she should be working as a watcher.
Can be a bit of a sticky fingers when it comes to food, ingredients, and spices. She’ll steal about anything she’s never heard of to whip up a meal for the Johannsens most nights. Hey, if pennies can be pinched in some places, she can take longer showers. Quietest place in the world, that damn shower. It’s called balance, ever heard of it?
“Control freak this, control freak that”. Drue may just be, but for good reason. Do you know how many times their home would’ve burned down if she hadn’t been there to watch after the stove? Or how many times their cat would’ve run away, because if Drue weren’t there to shut the door, who would? Speaking of shutting doors, nobody in this goddamn house locks the door! Safety, who, I guess?
part three / wanted connections
that was fun, wasn’t it? / ex-spouse & friend: They were twenty. They were sad. They got married. Truly, the oldest and dearest story in the books. It was comedic, at the time. Of course, they eventually came to their senses. Did they ever go through the actual divorce process? Drue can’t seem to remember... But it doesn’t matter. Because the truth is, they’ll always be friends. It’s platonic. Simple as that.
punching bag / boxing ring opponents: People have gotta get their stress out somehow, right? Much different to being scrappy like she was at her childhood schools, she’s relying on a healthier outlet. A.k.a boxing. She’s either throwing punches at a punching bag, or your character. It’s all in good fun, right? Safety first. Promise. We’re professionals here.
you’re the best friend i’ve ever had / pen pals: Drue isn’t great at making friends. It’ll never be because she doesn’t like people, rather she can’t get herself to connect with them... enough to care about what they’re saying... okay, that does sound bad, doesn’t it? Finally, she’s got herself a pen pal. Someone she can vent to about her days, without having to stare into a pair of eyes. Without having to even know their name. It’s great to speak with someone while remaining in your comfort zone. That’s all she can ask for these days.
part four / out of character
Hiya! I’m Kit! 25, she/her.
Ok so it might be totally obvious at times that I haven’t read these books, HOWEVER!! I have them on hold on my library app because I just got back into reading this year! Yay reading, yay reading lol!
If I’m not here, I am singing Lionel Richie to my cats and playing viddy games! Give me some suggestions or tell me your faves <3
Aaaaand with that, let’s play!
