Sometimes I think of James cutting Stella’s life support because she was too far gone. The medical staff would’ve done it sooner or later but he couldn’t wait, he hated seeing her like that.

He hates himself for it but he knows it was for the best.

“I’m going to sound like an utter nut for saying this,” James took out the lighter in his pocket and lit his cigarette. The smoke rolled off of it in a long, thin wispy trail as he took a drag. It was cold out as usual but it felt cooler than normal, a little windy even and he bundled himself tightly in his wool coat. “But I met this girl and it’s like I remember her but the memories don’t feel real. Like they’re false memories or something.”

Claudia was a mystery. She showed up out of nowhere yet when he met her, all these ‘memories’ came flooding in and he knew they couldn’t be real. He didn’t have a kid, he was absolutely certain of it, yet he “remembered” holding her as an infant at the hospital, teaching her how to ride a bike when she was a bigger kid and all the skinned knees, the first time she dyed her hair or how they got into a fight when she got her nose piercing. 

Yet none of it was real. But it sure felt like it. She was tangible, she could be touched and heard and seen. “Am I just going crazy?”

“Hmm?” James had been staring off into space, Kelly just had been in his line of vision. So much had been on his mind, mainly work and the responsibility that came with it. Too much to think about and so little time to get it done. Even when he did get a peaceful moment, his mind was still running. “Oh, no, I was just lost in thought, my apologies.”

James wasn’t one to judge especially since he had been caught mumbling to himself on a number of occasions. It was the stress. Most people spoke out loud to themselves once in awhile anyways. “It’s fine, you don’t need to worry.”

James shook the snow from his dark brown locks. His blue eyes squinted through the foggy atmosphere, making out vague shapes of buildings and cars but no people. It was quiet and lonely in Old Pine. Sometimes he’d like to be bothered. 

He took out a cigarette and lit it. A thin wispy line of smoke trailed from the cigarette as he took a long drag and exhaled.

There was plenty of work to be done but James grew weary of the gloomy atmosphere of his dimly lit office. So he decided to step out into the grey gloomy atmosphere outside. 

The sky was cloudy as usual. Fog rolled over the town, covering it in a thin wispy layer. James took out his lighter and lit himself a smoke. Old Pine wasn’t much of a sight to see that with its old rotted buildings and near ghost town status. He rarely ever saw someone else out here.

Sometimes I think about James’ desire to have kids. He never got to become a father due to unfortunate circumstances, and also being very focused on his career. Occasionally I play with the idea of the town creating a physical manifestation of a child for him. I’ve named her Claudia and I tend to think she’s similar-ish to Maria from Silent Hill (Born from a wish anyone?) in that she has no real “identity.” She appears in Old Pine and she’s lost and confused, she has this strange yearning to find her “father” and maybe she has some false memories implanted in her.

Idk if I’d ever go through with it for his main canon / story but it’s interesting to think about.

James is one of those ironic characters who can be very extroverted and be seen connecting with people. He can be very empathetic and he has a down to earth charisma about him that drew people to him in the first place. It’s a big reason why he succeeded in office, other than truly being there for the people and putting them first.

But he’s also incredibly isolated. I think sometime after Stella passed and he furthered his political career, he found himself not really all that close with other politicians. Politics was “business” so to speak. A lot of them were just in it for themselves and he doesn’t vibe with that.

Moving to Old Pine really exasperated his loneliness. The town is a near ghost town, he doesn’t see anyone outside of office very often. He’s frequently surrounded by the worst people, particularly those outside of his own independent party, but there’s some snakes in the grass and he tries to weed them out as best he can. He doesn’t want a good thing to go rotten. A few bad apples can spoil the bunch as they say.

And if he’s not surrounded by shit people, he’s completely alone. His office is bleak and dim. The streets are quiet and he’s left to ponder and smoke. At home, it’s also silent and he has nothing but the soft blue glow of the television or the static of the radio to console him. 

It’s hell on earth and he wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

I lost whatever semblance of innocence I had long ago. We were all young and naïve once. Life beat that out of me and it continues to beat it out of me. Once I started my political career, it beat it out of me even more, and despite my best efforts to not get caught in the crossfires, I always get burned.

Being mayor wasn't so bad, I enjoyed it in fact. But the higher I got up, the more ugly everything became. Once I became a member of parliament that was when I really began to see all the lying and bribery and other shit these fucks get away with on a daily basis. There's some good people out there, believe me, but they're a rarity and even the most upright of people aren't free of sin.

But starting my own party? Winning a federal election? Not to mention my time in office...God, I've seen too much shit, heard too much. But I keep fighting, for whatever it is I'm fighting for. I like to think some things I do make a difference. That is when I'm not guilted by some of the hard choices I've had to make.

People think as leader I just have to flick a switch and it's all said and done, but the process is much more complicated than that. Sometimes I have little say and you get dealt with some pretty shit cards.

And boy, have I been given a pretty shit deck.
