Chapter Sixty-Five: What a long week

(April 22nd, 2018, Sunday Noon)

Natsu wasn’t the brightest bulb in the box.

Was that even the saying? He wasn’t sure, but he was fine with that.

He didn’t need to be the smartest around, happy with his general education and physical strength. Plus, he liked to think he had a great sense of humor, often laughing at his own jokes.

So, when Laxus briefed them on the solar installation project, Natsu simply didn’t follow. Maybe it was all the technical talk that had him lost, or maybe -definitely- it was his distracted mind that didn’t allow room for the random knowledge.

From the sound of it, Laxus said it would be a few weeks before they got electricity in the school since there was a lot to do, but things were running smoothly? He wasn’t sure, but Laxus didn’t look worried, so Natsu didn’t fret about it.

How much did she hear?

“Damn it,” Natsu hissed, struggling to breathe even after clawing at his chest.

She was there. She was right there.

He blinked as more tears filled his vision, teeth gnashing as a wave of self-loathing struck him. Or maybe it was nausea? His whole world spun as he raced down the hall, taking in shaky breaths as he fought the urge to vomit.

How much did she hear?

How badly had he ruined things?

uh bc the fandom wanted this so I wrote it

“Hey, girlie,” Lucy cringed as she pressed herself into the wall of a shop she had been cornered against. She glared slightly into the eyes of the sleazy playboy that stuck his face so closely near her own, his sly grin not at all charming. “You look lonely, wanna join me ‘n my friends for a date? It is winter, after all, best to stick close with others or so I’ve heard. That sundress of yours can’t be all that warm,”

“No thanks, I’m waiting here for someone,” She said bluntly, gripping onto the straps of her purse as her nervousness quelled within her. Truth be told, she had just been with her friends and was on her way home after their lunch date ended. It wasn’t a long walk back to her apartment from where she was, and it was still fairly light outside, so she didn’t really there’d be any danger in returning alone. 

“I’ll bet they’re as cute as you,” He grinned, shoving his thumb over his shoulder as he pointed to his friend. “And my buddies over here would have someone to pay them attention, it’s kind of boring to share one girl you know,” 

“I’m not interested, nor would they be,” Lucy let out an uneasy breath as the patience of the strange men seemed to thin, his hand quickly around her wrist in the next second. 

“That’s quite a sharp tongue you’ve got there,” He clicked his tongue, yanking the blonde forward. “Don’t be so stuck up, we’ll have a good time together,”

“I d-d-don’t wa––!” Her heels dragged on the pavement for only a moment before someone’s arm was wrapped around her waist, holding her back.

“You need my girl for somethin’?” Another stranger’s deep voice cut into the conversation. Lucy looked over her shoulder in surprise, flustered by the punky aesthetic that her savior was clad in. 

He wore a black knitted beanie that rested at an angle atop his head, his bangs sculpted and brushed aside. His ears held a solid black stud and a matching cuff that wrapped around his curved helix. Sat upon the edge of his peach pink bottom lip was a silver ring that enhanced his overall look. She felt its warm metal press against her cheek as he offered a subtle kiss, his eyes pointed at the freak who still had his grasp around her wrist. The fur of his collar brushed against the underside of her chin as he moved to stand upright again.

“S-Sorry, man…didn’t know she was yours…” Lucy sighed in relief as she watched the three of them walk away, her legs feeling too weak to stand.

“You okay there?” The boy held her steady as her knees gave out, her breath quickening slightly. 

“Y-Yeah, yes…oh my gosh, thank you so much,” She gleamed, turning to face the pink-haired boy who smiled gently at her.

“Hey, my pleasure, those guys were jerks for scarin’ ya like that,” He chuckled, his thumbs dipping into his pockets as he dropped his weight onto his left hip. “Sorry ‘bout that kiss, by the way. Figured it’d be more believable if I did that,” 

“O-Oh, no biggie, I…didn’t mind it,” Lucy laughed awkwardly, her cheeks burning with slight embarrassment. 

“You on your way home?”

“Ah, yeah,” Lucy nodded, her feet shuffling a bit, nervous under his weirdly kind and sharp gaze.

“Mind if I get ya the rest of the way home? Not to be weird or anything, I swear,” He said, biting slightly on his lip ring.  “I have a little sister so I’m kinda protective, I’d hate for some dude to try and drag ya off again,”

“Yeah, okay…thank you,” 

“Anytime,” He grinned, following Lucy’s steps as she began to walk in the direction of her apartment. “The name’s Natsu, by the way,”

“I’m Lucy,”

Chapter Sixty-Two: Distractions- Part Two

(April 15th, 2018, Sunday Morning)

Despite needing to breathe deeply, Natsu nearly held his breath most of their walk. He kept his eyes peeled as he looked all around them. Usually he didn’t have to be that cautious while off base, but now he knew there was danger right behind him.

It stole most of his focus.

‘All it takes is one mistake.’

He couldn’t rely on his sense of hearing. It didn’t matter how sharp his ears were, the only sound he heard was that damn ringing.

He would have little time to react if a sprinter came out of nowhere. Thinking about how badly that could end up had Natsu gripping the handle of his knife so hard his hand hurt.

Just when he thought things couldn’t get worse, Lucy started humming a song to herself. His jaw fell as he looked at her, causing the girl to turn his way.

“Yes?”

Natsu had no response. He couldn’t comprehend why she looked so calm when they had feral creatures at their heels, wanting to take a bite out of them. Of course, it would be difficult considering their teeth had been removed, but that wasn’t the point.

Just one drop of blood was all it took to get infected.

Lucy ends up becoming the owner of a small, troublesome dragon. However, owning a dragon is not a simple matter -especially when the dragon turns out to be not a dragon.

Lucy felt her hand shaking as she held the key in her grip, ready to summon Virgo. Before leaving yesterday, the spirit had assured her mage that she wouldn’t mind being the first to test out meeting Natsu. Still, Lucy was beyond nervous about how this would go.
