imagine if, after the events on starkiller base, Kylo and Hux are made to retrain as a command team. imagine if they were told they had to work on being able to coordinate in the field, so that during another confrontation their discord doesn’t cause disaster

and imagine if one of the ways they try to address this is with battle meditation - or more specifically, with a force meld, which involves using the force to link minds. it’s not a true meld, as that would require both of them to be force sensitive, but they’re desperate and adapting techniques is better than nothing

except then it doesn’t just fail, it fails miserably

Hux is not a force user and Kylo is basically just trying things as he goes. at heart, the meditation is empathy based, so that’s where they start.

the mind, though, is a dangerous playground

they manage to link together, which is strange enough, but in the attempt to create a two-way channel, they end up completely tearing down the natural barriers and invading each other’s head

it’s an open floodgate and almost enough to incapacitate Hux, who’s being overwhelmed by all these raw emotions and who doesn’t have the training technique to protect his mind from Kylo’s when they merge

it’s just feeling - pure, unadulterated - and all he can do is sit there and experience it

the magnitude of it is enough that it actually wretches a sob from him, even as his nose begins to bleed from the pressure

Kylo immediately begins to reconstruct the barriers, trying to separate them as fast as possible, but his own face is pained and its delicate work. he could do unspeakable damage if he messes up.  his hands are on either side of Hux’s face, his fingers over his temples, and Hux is gripping onto Kylo’s wrists like a vice 

being inside Kylo’s head is devastating. Hux can’t believe anyone can feel this much, this intensely

all the compartmentalized child abuse, locked away like broken teeth inside of drawers, the anger and self loathing - the shame

there’s so much rage Hux chokes on it, feels his throat burn with acid right before it closes with fear.

fear of failure, fear of not being enough

his stomach is hollow with doubt, even while conviction squeezes his sternum. its almost more potent than the anger, this drive to finish what was started and to fulfill a legacy passed down through blood

resentment pounds at his temples, shaped to the idea of family, of father

and there, beneath it all, is the heady thrum of power - seductive, pleasurable - making his every cell cry out for more 

imagine Hux sitting there, wracked by this tide, his breath ragged. imagine how overwhelmed he is - the turmoil once churning below the surface now exposed - and the way his knuckles are white on Kylo’s wrists when he finally repairs enough for Hux to think again

imagine, after a moment , that Hux finally croaks out ‘is this what you deal with all the time?’ 

and then imagine how raw kylo’s voice must be when he says:

‘we’re not in my mind, hux. we’re in yours.’
