so in the almost-kiss scene, lucanis suddenly displays this confident swagger as he boxes rook in against the wall. and don’t get me wrong, it’s hot af, but it does contrast with some of his other behavior. and right when his rizz is absolutely rizzing, he stops. he seems to have a revelation of some kind and he panics and leaves

since we unfortunately never get an in-game callback to this moment, we’re left with no canon explanation of his thought process at that moment

what we do know is that he considers rook his first real relationship. however, i’d be willing to bet that he is trained in seduction to a certain extent. after all, it’s a very useful strategy for getting close to a mark. and even if lucanis never used it much (or at all—and he certainly never used it as casually as illario), the training is there. and in a moment of emotion, it just… kicks in

but then, either because of his own conscience or perhaps a dig from spite, he realizes what he is doing. and he’s thrown. he cares about rook, he wants to tell them, but all he has to offer is this fake playacting that does not truly show his heart

and that is not good enough. not for rook

so what does he do? he finds a way to show his feelings in a more authentic way. a more personal way. he cooks for them. cooking is a skill he gained because he wanted to, not because caterina made him learn it. and when rook says he didn’t have to do that, he immediately contradicts them

yes, i did

he did need to. he needed to share what he feels in a way that he knows is his and no one else’s, a way that feels untainted by all his other baggage

and when rook responds with genuine happiness and appreciation, he feels seen and loved for who he truly is. and from then on, he is theirs, body, mind, and soul

Me: I really hope by the time of Veilguard he's retired. I doubt it but I hope for his own sanity he is

Friend: I hope he’s relaxing on a beach somewhere far far away sipping margaritas and not having vivid nightmares about his friend related trauma

Me: I hope he's on a beach in Rivain or something. They seem to be mostly doing fine

Friend: Buuuuut knowing his luck, even if that were the case he’d end up somewhere where Varric’s books have a cult following and he can’t turn anywhere without being bombardes by the horror filled saga that is his friend writing erotica about his other friends love lives

Me: Yeah he thinks he's escaped the chaos and then he walks into a store and sees Varric's book staring back at him. He just turns around and leaves

Friend: Or worse- a lifesized cardboard cutout of Varric promoting a wall full of the books. Somehow the cardboard cutout has an even deeper neckline

Me: Oh, of course it does. Cullen points out that his shirt doesn't actually go down that far and the shopkeep is like "oh? Do you know him? I heard he had the cutouts made special" and Cullen just sighs heavily and asks for the biggest book they have so he can bash his own head in with it

Me: Because it sounds so much like something Varric would do and he's so tired

Friend: He gets so used to the lifesized cutouts (that he may or may not have casual conversations to himself with when he thinks no one is looking) that he doesn’t notice actual Varric is there for a book signing while he’s passing through town and he scares the everloving shit out of him

Me, laughing: Varric sees him and calls out "hey, curly!" and Cullen's blood goes cold. Dread washes over him

Friend: Even better. Varric is like right beside and/or directly two feet in front of him when he says it

Me: Oh absolutely he is

Friend: Cullen screams like a little girl.

Me: Yes he does. Varric just laughs

Friend: Because fuck everything else that badass dork has been through. That moment is the scariest thing he has ever been through. No amount of training or battle experience could prepare him for that moment

Me: He was there when Corypheus attacked Haven and Skyhold, he led the siege on Adamant Fortress. He's Commander Cullen. But seeing Varric at a book signing after he "retired" to Rivain is the scariest goddamn thing he's ever experienced

Friend: And he adds another tick to his shame tally

Me: He just can't get away from that dwarf

When Lucanis tries to offer dating advice to Emmrich late in the game, he admits that his only 2 ideas are gifting knives or getting coffee.

If we think back to the early game, soon after meeting him, Rook buys Lucanis a wyvern-tooth dagger (much to his surprise & delight as we also learn that he loves wyverns) and accompanies him to his favorite café. There, Lucanis gets “all romantic about roasts”, as noted by Illario.

HOWEVER, I am inclined to think that Lucanis was just yapping because he was feeling romantic about ROOK. I mean, Rook just showed up and unknowingly gave him the best little date ever. That was like a 3 out of 2. Instinctively. Man was cooked from the start.

He probably stared blankly at the ceiling of the pantry that night, equal parts giddy and miserable. Feeling that crush start to take form, while also feeling devastated and terrified of what he’s become, of what he could turn into if he slips, of the damage he could do.
