"As a Native New Yorker of 22 Years of age growing up in New York City many of the MTA's subway stations had always piqued both my curiosity and interest from a New Yorker perspective. Gallery/ museum Review Paper Intermediate Photography HUA 230 5324 Professor Scott Sternbach, CUNY, Fall 2021 BLOG POST
David Lui
Gallery/Museum review
November 29th 2021
Intermediate photography HUA 230
Professor Scott Sternbach
Gallery/Museum review
For the gallery/ museum view paper, I visited the The Richard Wilcox exhibition titled, “The Scaffolding Project” at the SoHo photo gallery located at 15 White Street on Sunday November 28th 2021. I chose this exhibit because I am very interested in architectural photography and wanted to see photographs of things other than buildings, like construction and scaffolding. Prior to visiting this exhibit, I had only thought that architectural photography only involves photographs of buildings and nothing else. So when I looked at the SoHo Photo website, I was very excited to take a look at this particular photography exhibit.
When I first entered the SoHo photo gallery building, I was greeted by another exhibition that was one of the seven photography exhibits showing at the gallery. The photo gallery building itself was a large one story building with stairs near the entrance that led up to a walkway where you can view the other exhibitions that were showing. The exhibition that I chose to visit and write about is Richard Wilcox’s, The Scaffolding Project. The overall theme of the exhibition was photographs of scaffolding taken at different locations within New York City at different angles and in different creative ways. When I entered the exhibition, I was in awe of just getting to visit a particular exhibition in the photo gallery in person. I can’t describe how I felt. It is one of those things that you have to see and try by yourself in order to experience it. Getting to see The Scaffolding Project in person was an amazing experience. I was able to meet and talk to the photographer himself and he told me a lot about where he photographed each scaffolding and how he did it. I was very inspired by his work. And also had gotten the chance to meet the photographer of the scaffolding project Richard Wilcox.
Richard Wilcox is a photographer from New York City and primarily focuses on architectural photography but also uses artifacts that could be found or located within urban environments. Some of the projects that he has done are the following: Fragments, The Scaffolding Project, and Lane Lines, which all can be found on his website: www.richardwilcoxphotgraphy.com. All three of his works incorporate architectural photography and other things related to architecture.
I think that Richard Wilcox’s approach to technique is making ordinary photographs turn into meaningful and powerful photographs, like photographs that make an individual stop, question, and think really hard about how the photographer framed and set up a particular photo that only the photographer truly knows how the photograph was captured or made. I think that this is his approach to technique because when I had looked at not just his Scaffolding Project, but also his photography website, which also has his other photography projects, all the photographs that I looked at made me stop and really think about how he was able to photograph his works in a way that makes a person really think and question a lot about the photographs.
The two photographs that I chose to compare and write about for the museum/gallery paper were taken at West 57th Street and Grand Central Terminal. The first photograph that I will be talking about is a scaffolding photographed at West 57th Street. I chose this particular photograph because it looked very stunning to me. This particular photograph was taken across the street from where the building with the scaffolding was, which I really like because of how much you are able to see. You are able to see not just the scaffolding, but the building. I also really liked how the photograph has so many details. There are so many visuals and aesthetics that can be found by just looking at the photograph such as the lines. For lines I really like how there is a repetition of lines and colors that can be found throughout the photograph. There are many of the same lines that repeat and are also used more than once throughout the photograph for both the building and scaffolding. For color, I really like how the photograph is in black and white because both colors help brighten and make the photograph look very minimal for someone that is looking at it. And finally, I really like that the photograph tricks your mind because when I first looked at it, it was hard for me to tell whether or not it was a photograph from a distance. From further away, the photo looked like an amazing sketch or drawing but upon further examination and getting closer to it, I realized that it was indeed a photograph.
The second photograph I will be talking about is a scaffolding photographed at Grand Central Terminal . I chose this particular photograph because it was different from the other photographs in the photo exhibit. This second photo I chose to write about is the only photograph that is dark because it was taken inside Grand Central station. Also, the rest of the photographs from this exhibition were photographed indoors. One thing I like about this particular photograph is that the first three columns on the scaffolding look the same as the other columns and repeat because if you look at it closely, the columns on the scaffolding look like they were built similar to the other ones on the left. Another thing I like about this photograph is the angle in which the photo was taken because it allows you to see the side of the scaffolding inside Grand central station in New York City. The last thing I like about this photograph is that it makes you curious. If you look closely at the columns, there is a reflection of something on the window inside Grand Central station which I could not exactly recognize at first, which made it more mysterious and made me more curious to what it could be. It turned out that it was a reflection of a chandelier in Grand Central station. When Richard Wilcox told me what it was, I was amazed and surprised as to what it was.
There are some similarities and differences between the two photos that I have chosen. The first similarities between the two photographs is that both photographs are mysterious because of the way they were photographed. For example, the photograph of the scaffolding taken at West 57th Street in New York City tricks an individual’s mind because when an individual looks at the photograph from far away or from a certain distance, they may think that it is or resembles a sketch or a drawing. But upon getting closer to the photograph and looking at the details, the individual will see that it is actually a photograph. The photograph of the scaffolding taken inside Grand Central station in New York City is mysterious because of the reflection of an object within the photograph. An individual will look at the photograph and think about what the reflection could be. Some may know that it’s a chandelier, but many would probably spend a lot of time looking at the image before figuring out what it is. Another similarity between the two photographs is that both photographs have patterns that are repeated and reused a lot. For example, the photograph of the scaffolding taken at West 57th Street in New York City has a lot of the same or similar lines that repeat and can be found throughout the photograph because of the angle in which the photograph was taken. The photograph of the scaffolding taken inside Grand Central Station in New York City has three columns that look very similar, even identical on the scaffolding because of its shapes like X’s and squares.
While there are many similarities between these two photographs, there are also some differences among them. The first difference that both photographs have is that they were taken at different angles and heights. The photograph of the scaffolding photographed at West 57th Street was photographed at an angle where an individual could see a lot of the building and the scaffolding because it was taken from a higher elevation inside another building. This allowed the viewer to see more of the building and area around the scaffolding.. The photograph of the scaffolding inside Grand Central Station was captured at an angle where an individual can see only the side and a portion of the scaffolding. This was due to the lower angle at which the photo was taken. The second difference is that both photographs have different tones because of the lightness and darkness of the photograph. The photograph of the scaffolding at West 57th Street was taken outside, which will make the individual feel more positive due to the brightness of the photo and because the sky in this photo is white, which is a bright color, as opposed to the second photograph of the scaffolding inside of Grand Central Station. The darkness of the photograph may make someone feel sad or have a different mood because of how dark the photograph appears.
In conclusion, I enjoy visiting not only the Richard Wilcox Scaffolding Project, but also the SoHo Photo Gallery on White Street in Manhattan. I think that the curator’s message throughout my visit to the gallery is to use your imagination as a photographer and be creative and inspired by other photographers’ work because each photographer is different. Each photographer focuses on different types of photography and they use their imagination and creativity to create their art. I had a great time visiting all seven photo exhibitions that were on display and showing when I had visited. It is also free to visit the photo gallery. You will need to be fully vaccinated but you do not have to show your vaccination card. I do not have any complaints and suggestions. I would highly recommend anyone to visit the Soho Photo Gallery and any future exhibitions.

Selects for Personal Project Cooper Park skatepark Interview from field journal Intro to Photojournalism HUN 191-1288 Fall Session 1 2021, Laguardia Community College ,CUNY Professor Scott Sternbach Blog Post
For my Personal Project which is Cooper Park skatepark I had photographed the Cooper park skate park like the ramps and rails as well as photographs of the skateboarders (portraits ) and skateboarders doing tricks at different parts of the skatepark to help tell and explain why skateboarders like skateboarding at Cooper park and what makes the skatepark unique and specials .
I had interviewed four skateboarders on different dates when I was doing my personal project . Their names were Corey (November 3rd 2021) Marcus November 3rd 2021) CJ (November 5th 2021) and Kai (December 6th 2021)
How I interviewed them was that I would say Hello to to them and introduce myself and ask them if I can interview them for the personal project. And then I would ask them what makes Cooper park Skatepark unique and special as they were telling me their response I would write it down in my field journal on the notes app which I used my iPhone for it .
One out of the four allowed me to photograph them for my personal project (Corey) because they either did not want to be photographed (Marcus and CJ) or that the parents of the child did not want me to photograph their child (Kai) . Which as a photographer and photo journalist it is disappointing but at the end of the day as a photographer and photojournalist myself I have to be respectful to others
Below are the responses to the interviewed that I had done for the personal Project for Corey ,Marcus ,CJ and Kai from the days that I was at Cooper park skatepark doing my personal project
