Straight outta Taipei && from the future yawl!
Way back in September, we welcomed jonCates from the future (Taipei Taiwan Standard Time) as the DOS Punks DAO Artist of the Month.
DOS Punks fam, Bayneko, summed it up nicely, saying, "jonCates is an experimental artist and glitch media master, who uses writings, digital images, films, games, and even colloquial grammar to draw the viewer into his glitch Western universe."
I first bumped into jonCates in sgt_slaughtermelon's Glitch Forge server but didn't start paying close attention until Kentucky Route Zero made a Glitch Western Wednesday appearance! Check out our conversation that follows.
The following is a total copy/pasta from a jonCates Medium post (here).
DOS Punks conversations, Part I
₿odaciouspiratΞ (DOS Punk 856) && jonCates discussion, September 2022
(₿odaciouspiratΞ (DOS Punk 856) && jonCates (The Cowgirl) in conversation)
₿odaciouspiratΞ: howdy jon! The Cowgirl is especially impactful for me for two reasons: there is a remarkable resemblance to DOS Punk 856 that i normally have. and so The Cowgirl imagery became even more memorable because of how it was introduced to me
(https://twitter.com/joncates/status/1524431370864398336?s=20&t=VGbxlnfIpAaXKbELzKQnag)
jonCates: on May 11, 2022, i posted: today is the 1rst Glitch Western Wednesday yawl! ⚡⌛🔓 time to unLock sum secrets, from The Cowgirl… She dreamt of walking to the edge of the worlds again. Datamoshed, she left Kansas Territory that day… head’N Out West; towards a 鬼鎮 (Ghosttown), where she would find herself, inna Glitch Western
(The Cowgirl glitches virtual Spirit Simulator — jonCates (2022)
You are playing the final/first Interlude of Kentucky Route Zero, The Death of the Hired Man… In game, Emily sits at the bar in The Lower Depths, watching the television, and talking to Carrington. She says: “I was in a movie recently. A western. Kind of. A glitch western.”
(Kentucky Route Zero — Cardboard Computer (2011–2020)
₿odaciouspiratΞ: i went back afterward and did some catching up about how we arrived at the version of KRZ today. i love the haunting misery of the game’s locations and its characters.
(Kentucky Route Zero — Cardboard Computer (2011–2020)
jonCates: they credit me with initial inspiration and influence which is very sweet of them and which i appreciate endlessly we made a game together, Jake and Tamas and i, before they made Kentucky Route Zero (KRZ), which they also credit as being how KRZ got started after they had gotten started on KRZ, i began to formalize the structures of my Glitch Western so it becomes a situation where it’s all vry interrelated rly when Emily, in KRZ, sits at the bar and says that she was in a Glitch Western she is, in a sense, or from a certain point of view, saying that she (Emily) is Emily Mercedes Rich, who starred in my film 鬼鎮 (Ghosttown). which is supersweet kinda easter egg that Jake put into the narrative of KRZ to kinda say that we had been on these paths all along that we were in the same whirlds or that we were crossing over between our whirlds as we had done in reality for so many years togethers
₿odaciouspiratΞ: hell yeah! when i came across that line in your tweet thread, “I was in a movie recently.” i kind of sat up like “okay … what have i missed here … ?”
jonCates: its buried deep at the end for true believers, like you :)
₿odaciouspiratΞ: The Cowgirl, how did this character and imagery evolve in your work?
jonCates: i could answer in different ways like sum would be rly straightforward direct answers. for instance, in my film i set out to center female characters as well as queer the genre EMR (Emily) is perfect bc she is this person. she is this cowgirl +so i knew i wanted her to be The Cowgirl, the central fictional character in the film i had alrdy been writing for the film, but then when she agreed to do it, i started rly writing specifically for her as The Cowgirl +we were spending alot of time togethers, like a couple times a week, every week. we started to rly zone in on who The Cowgirl is +i think that even tho its an experimental art film, it still has sum traditional narrative structures, where often times, you have a central fictional character. this central character is often a version of the creator of the film, the director or the writer, etc. in this way, The Cowgirl, as played by Emily, is def’ly a version of me that we created togethers. she + i mirror each other, esp when we were out shooting on locations Out West all vry intentional
₿odaciouspiratΞ: jC and EMR on location 🖤
jonCates: ya! ‘shoot’N’ ;) +then to bring it around to the VR +such, im mixing different technological moments. im comparing technological ‘frontiers’ + industrial revolutions bc we’re living through different industrial revolutions now. Old West era is during a previous industrial revoltion that changes everything in a way that leads to this industrial revolution that we’re living through now. in our current industrial revolution digital is a technological ‘frontier’ literally and ideologically. this is how we get to California so its like a mix of all this, all of these considerations and motivations + all vry sincere actually, vry much who i rly am
₿odaciouspiratΞ: and this mix is so good. i can feel how it’s inextricably intertwined, so i appreciate the time and effort to share some of this with me.
jonCates: theres one other piece of the puzzle that you might like i went to Austria to study Media Art Hystories + got my Masters degree there. my MediaArtHistories program was the 1rst of its kind + i was literally the 1rst person to graduate from it lol! the whole idea in the program was to compare the past, present, futures of Media Art, so i was technically trained in how to do that
₿odaciouspiratΞ: and so that’s how you ended up in Austria? to participate in that degree program? how did you find it?
jonCates: yes, Oliver Grau founded the program, he created it. + i knew his work && was alrdy in communications w/ him etc. so when he started the program i applied. this is active Catholic monastery called Stift Göttweig on top of a little mountain is literally where i went to grad school lol
(Stift Göttweig Library — Jorge Royan 2009)
₿odaciouspiratΞ: …you lived there too? “on campus” essentially?
jonCates: sumtimes in the little village below, on the mountain so imagine being there, in that library, studying abt computers, VR, Digital Art, etc. thats what it was like. at a certain pt i also decided to do sumthin weirdy like that, in my own work, in 鬼鎮 (Ghosttown), working w/ my own experiences of haunted ‘Americana’
₿odaciouspiratΞ: i have a predisposition to want to experience haunting. and i appreciate your work on both the surface level (it looks cool!) and also for how it makes me feel.
jonCates: that’s high compliment! deeply appreciate it friend
₿odaciouspiratΞ: thank you for continuing to share.

JOMO SUMMER
DEATH PUNK 390 (Technicolor Fetanihilism) 4/30/22
Okay, so maybe we got a little carried away in the joy of missing out this summer, but we're still here! This DOS Punks DAO update features Empress Trash, our Artist of the Month for August 2022. I met Empress Trash through DOS Punks and got to know her sometime after Poop Fox (iykyk) but before people got really upset about the Grand Canyon. Anyway, while you're still here, and before I wax sediment-al , Empress was kind enough to participate in our Artist of the Month interview.
bodaciouspirate: Who are you? Where are you from?
Empress Trash: I'm the Empress of Trash, a human who is an artist on Earth. :P Originally from Northern Minnesota, went to college in Iowa, and lived in the Bay Area for like 8 years, now I'm a nomad with my dog Glitch currently in Baja Sur Mexico thinking of settling here, but we will see. I want to keep traveling for sure but also long for a place to lay roots down.
bp: What do you do?
ET: Art and shitpost mostly. The type of art styles I do vary greatly digitally: glitch, handdrawn animations, trash, realism, photography, AI, erotic... I love exploring disparate styles and new technologies and trying to synthesize them into my traditional art knowledge.
bp: When did you start?
ET: I have done art my whole life. When I was a child it was mostly drawing (black and white only, I was scared of color until my late 20s to be honest haha) and writing. As a teenager, I got to travel the world via scholarships at my high school and see all sorts of different art up close and personal which opened me up to more avant garde and conceptual work. I went to art school right out of high school and dropped out, spent my 20s being a party monster, then went back to school at the University of Iowa to obtain my BFA in painting, drawing and animation/design.
bp: How do you do what you do? What is your process?
ET: My process is ever evolving, because honestly I have Dissociative Identity Disorder - meaning multiple personalities - from extreme childhood trauma. Each part of my psyche has a different form of expression, and anymore most work together but there is still distinct versions of me creating at each point in time.
I start by creating source material - whether it be from AI, Photography, Painting or Drawing in Procreate or before being nomad I would create source material from painting or drawing physically - then I roll from there. I use procreate to hand animate which is how I get the wiggling lines. I use Midjourney mostly now for AI, but will be exploring soon an uncensored version of Stable Diffusion that Purz beats provided for me to do some sexxxy tings. Photography is mostly done on my iPhone 13, but I do have a separate Canon point and shoot I use sometimes. I will then bring these into After Effects, PhotoMosh or PhotoShop to finalize animations depending on the final look. Each piece has a slightly different process and settings, it's kind of like jazz when I create, I go with the flow and don't always know what the end product will visually look like, I'm more trying to capture a feel.
bp: How did you choose which medium you work in? When did you first discover your preference for this medium?
ET: I definitely prefer painting/drawing in procreate over anything else, but I'm always exploring. I think overall I would just call myself a digital mixed media artist meaning my end focus is to create a digital piece of work, but I will use whatever source material or software I can understand to keep pushing myself.
I love digital because it's freedom! I used to believe some of the chaos of physical painting is lost in digital, but I've found each work has unexpected results much like physical painting. The freedom comes from quick exploration of ideas, and relatively ease of fixing "mistakes" once I learned how to properly layer and change things.
I'm the type of person who goes to the art store and spends hours touching every brush and going through all the pencils to feel and explore all the different textures and materials, and what I love about procreate is you can create your own brushes or buy brush packs and do the same. It has become so robust from when it first started (I literally bought procreate in the first release on my old iPad mini and had one of those big nubby styluses to paint with before apple pencil which the apple pencil tech was a huge game changer which I think we undervalue a lot haha) there is always something new to add to just that part of the process alone.
bp: How closely are your creations connected to each other?
ET: I like to believe there is an interwoven narrative unfolding with all my work, because I think all art is a self portrait. Each piece is a moment in time of my story and observations of my inner and outer world. Drawing tends to be more of my inner world and photography more my outer world. AI I'm unsure which world that is exploring yet, since the tech is so new....maybe the metaphysical more - but all art I think is steeped in metaphysical qualities too.
Visually, while I have so many different processes, I feel there is a bit of me in each piece that people can feel and see.
bp: If you were to direct people to a specific piece of work that you feel really nails what you are aiming for with your creations, which would it be?
ET: Vanilla - which is my SuperRare genesis - really pushed me to synthesize so many disparate pieces of me and styles into one piece. I feel it really pushed the boundaries of myself visually and emotionally and is currently the epitome of top tier work of mine.
Vanilla (SuperRare) 8/25/22
bp: What inspires you? When inspiration has left the building where do you look to find it?
ET: I'm inspired by so much - nature, sex, psychology, consumption, identity. I rarely lack inspiration, because long ago I stopped relying on that tricky bitch to create and focused on discipline in creating. It doesn't matter what is being created, the action in and of itself of creating draws inspiration forward. Eventually all the blocks get cleared from regular practice, that it's just always flowing. In fact I have too many ideas most days I like to hand them away to other artists in chats. Recently I took a month long 1/2 break, I still was creating because I have to, but not pushing myself like I usually do. I found allowing myself space to just exist with no internal pressure to create was much needed, even if it was difficult sometimes, just to let some mental muscles rest.
bp: Why do you create? What is it that pushes you to keep creating?
ET: I have to create or I go insane and am a horrible person to be around. I get very angry and aggressive and when I was younger I would get violent even (not to people, but property) if I didn't allow myself to create. I could spend hours explaining why this is in detail, but in an attempt to keep it simple is - I have survived a lot of cruelty in the world, I'm very angry about it all, that anger is fundamentally injured passion, I have three options to release it - fight, fuck or create. Creating art is the most productive use of time for me and society, and least self destructive.
Super real - I probably would have been dead or in prison long ago if it wasn't for art as an outlet, it has been the only constant in my life, and quite literally saves me from others and myself.
bp: Is there an ultimate goal for your creations?
ET: Each piece has a different intention set in them, but overall the goal is to heal me, be critical and disruptive of systems around me I feel perpetuate cruelty and suffering. This disruption can be on a subconscious level and pretty subversive in my work, but it's there.
bp: What advice can you offer to other creators?
ET: Keep creating no matter what life is throwing at you. Keep trying to find your truth. Truth isn't black and white, but an ever changing and breathing entity we are all tapped into. Embrace it, don't fear it. Fuck fear, letting it guide actions will never serve you, it only serves fear. Practice daily, no matter your mood. Stay hydrated. Go for walks daily to get out of your space and head. Eat good food. Be kind to your inner child, because it's still you. Offer a hand to those struggling, but don't let them pull you down ever. Learn to say no.
Connect with other artists, they are who will sustain you. Check your jealousy - if a friend wins, you win too. If an adversary wins - you actually win too. We are all connected in this mess called life, and the quicker you accept that, the easier life and creation gets and faster you grow. See the depth in everything but don't take anything too serious. This reality is a practice in absurdity and beauty.

There is fire where you are going
Following my interview with Sean Luke in NYC, I spent a few days in the Ghostwood National Forest to reflect on my favorite summer month. As the sun sets on Sean’s time as @DOS Punks DAO’s Artist of the Month for July, it seems we’re left with more questions than answers.
DOS Punks DAO collected a few incredible artworks by Sean this month, and this is where I’ll begin to search for answers.
'passing_time' February 13, 2022
Sean minted 'passing_time' during the halftime show on Super Bowl Sunday. It's his genesis mint on Tezos.
'state_1' April 9, 2022
Sean created 'state_1' as the first artwork in his 'pixelated_meditations' series. It was never listed on primary but airdropped to collectors instead.
'penultimate_refraction' March 16, 2022
This mesmerizing artwork is one of my favorites from Sean. Why? Consider the idea that Sean's battle axe is Aseprite, and I'll help you glue your brain back together.
So … have I found any answers? Even if I have, I'm not sharing. Check out Sean’s art, and find out for yourself. You don’t have to visit Ghostwood National Forest to do this, but I recommend it.
In other DOS Punks news, I transferred 7.64 XTZ to the DAO wallet for royalties from secondary sales of the DOS Peaks FWWM token. And if you can believe it, Sean Luke is the top collector of FWWM!
'FWWM' January 22, 2022
Through the darkness of futures past, the magician longs to see, one chants out between two worlds, fire walk with me!
Sean also collected a number of artworks from @haydiroket, @shitwolfnft, @crimebreakfast + @deportedphotog, @purz, and donated them to the DOS Punks DAO Tezos vault.
Thank you for everything, Sean. I'll see you again in 25 years.

Stand clear of the closing doors please
bodaciouspirate for DOS Punks
Bing bong! If you've not heard by now, Sean Luke is the DOS Punks DAO Artist of the Month for July 2022, and already this month, we can join Sean in celebrating the release of his 17th artwork minted on Tezos.
'◌_▨' July 8, 2022
Damn good, right? It gets better! I have some exclusive Sean Luke content for you right here. Sean agreed to meet with me for an interview, and before he could change his mind, I hopped on a flight to NYC. He challenged me to pick the meeting spot, and I suggested Taverna Kyclades - a Greek spot I'd been to once before. It's in Astoria which is just a short car ride from LaGuardia, and I figured we could see what's good over some pan-fried cheese and cold beer.
BP: So how about this? Let's start at the beginning. Who are you? Where are you from?
SL: My name is Sean, and I was born, raised, and still live in NY.
BP: And what do you do? When did you start?
SL: I exist.
Time out. This response, "I exist," is pedal-to-the-metal Sean Luke. It's difficult for me to add context in this format, but give Sean a follow, interact with him, and see for yourself what he's all about.
SL: I started making art in the 80s and got ‘serious’ about it in the 90s.
BP: Tell me about your art. How do you do what you do? What is your process?
SL: I draw from over 30 years of art experience, so refining that down would be rather hard. For my current minted works, I use Aseprite exclusively, which is essentially Microsoft Paint with layers and an animation add-on.
BP: How did you choose which medium you work in? When did you first discover your preference for this medium?
SL: I don't have a specific medium, but when it comes to my minted works, I chose Aseprite for a few reasons. The main one being that it's so bare bones and straight to the art. Again, if you're familiar with Microsoft Paint, then you will understand how quickly you can start drawing/painting in Aseprite, which I love.
BP: How closely are your creations connected to each other?
Time out, again. Just as I'm asking this question, a Chevy Impala cruises past the restaurant, windows down, and blasting Beastie Boys:
"But if you're hot to trot, you think you're slicker than grease I've got news for you crews, you'll be sucking like a leech!"
I looked at Sean who nodded along with me, approvingly.
SL: MOST of my pieces have no connection, but my current minted works are part of a greater cosmic quilt.
BP: If you were to direct people to a specific piece of work that you feel really nails what you are aiming for with your creations, which would it be?
SL: This is an interesting question, but for me there is no specific piece for something I am 'aiming' for beyond the enjoyment of creating.
BP: What inspires you?
SL: Lots of shit.
BP: Why do you create. What is it that pushes you to keep creating?
SL: I enjoy it. I enjoy creating LOL.
BP: Is there an ultimate goal for your creations?
SL: Enjoyment ...
BP: What advice can you offer to other creators?
SL: ENJOY what you are doing, and make art that you ENJOY. Too much enjoyment LOL.
BP: Thank you, Sean! I'll be seeing ya ...
I trust that you enjoyed this interview with Sean Luke as much as I did. In the next update, we'll take a look at some more of Sean's minted artworks including those collected by DOS Punks DAO.

DOS Punks DAO Update July 2022 - PART I
Hi everyone! This is Itzel @misdeditos, bringing you a new DOS Punks DAO update!
During the month of June we had the real pleasure of having @Cruel_Coppinger as our new artist of the month!
Cruel Coppinger is a #GlitchArt, #DigitalArt creator, and DOS Punks DAO member. Owner of DOS Punk 630 and 544! <3
A very unique artist, his pieces can turn into trashart, digital paintings, re-imagined TVs, celestial glitch clouds, and Asian Zen philosophy traces.
During the last weeks, DAO members were surprised with two generous drops by Cruel!
corrupted░cloud#15 5568 x 3721px - PNG - 45.2mb
&
corrupted░cloud#14 5367 x 6652 - PNG - 84.1mb
The second, being an an amazing digital sunset painting with all 1,000 DOS Punks hidden somewhere.
One of my favorite pieces by cruel is ‘Trash Tornado’, which was a Gift NFT for collectors of the 'Trashed Hoodie'. A black and white tornado full of suspended trashcan containers, wheels, and some boxes moving in a very calm and zen equilibrium. This one is a 3/3 edition owned only by artists Max Capacity, Desultor and Cruel himself. Talk about FOMO right?
Another favorite of mine is ‘Crying’. A 25 edition glitch piece. In Cruel's own words: “it uses part of an old android model for the face and simulated the water for the tears in blender, then threw the render in the moshing machine”. The result is not only a satisfying enigmatic trance experience but also by collecting it 100% of the proceeds automatically went to the donation address for Ukraine.
During June, DOS Punks DAO collected a lot of pieces from Cruel. A few fancy 1/1s and a few multiple editions. In total, DOS Punks community collected 22 crypto art pieces of him.
From the 1/1s we collected b̸͓̘̩̙̫̀͐͗͜ͅủ̵̘̭̗̞͔̮̰̌d̶̰͖͔͔̉̽̐̌͗͠d̶̰̙̥̒̔̈̅̀̕h̸̢̠̱̼̹̤̬͊̈́̓͠͠ą̶̡̤̞̖͈͌͂͛͆͆̀, contingence, and Trashscii 6, 23, 11, 25, 18, 8, and 27. While from the multiple edition pieces we collected Too Much T̴̢̨̝͕̲̬̦͓̋̐̃͊̚V̵̧͙͙̩͚̙̰͖̄̈́͛͘, AI R.E.M II, gm, come back brighter, 'Lotus', Cloud Spin III, petulance, terminal.░end░of░line, H̾I̾G̾H̾L̾Y̾ ̾S̾T̾R̾U̾N̾G̾, 𝚅𝚊𝚙𝚘𝚛 𝚃𝚒𝚖𝚎, Crying, Peace for Ukraine, and Outside PerspEcTive.
You can go to dospunksdao.tez gallery and see everything we have collected so far!
Again, thank you Cruel Coppinger for letting us immerse ourselves into your art through the month of June and for being part of DOS Punks art community!
In another note... we have a new artist of the month for July!
The ultra talented and mysterious pixelated entity of Sean Luke! We'll make a FEW more DAO updates about him because... I have no idea where this will lead us. But I have a definite feeling it will be a place both wonderful and strange.
Stay with us friends! Thanks for reading! Meanwhile... enjoy the weekend!
-Itzel

Hey yo!!! Itzel aka @misdeditos here... bringing you the latest @dospunksdao update!
During April @maxcapacity dropped his latest project... DOS PUNKS RECRUNCHED! A new reimagined version of DOS Punks at 24x24px. Bitcrunched using Photoshop 5.0 (1998 version). Every DAO member received their corresponding crunchy punk! Also, MAX split 50% of revenues with @DOSPunksDAO wallet!

See the work collected here: https://objkt.com/profile/dospunksdao/owned March also saw the grand opening of DOS-Mart, the @greencross one-stop shop for all your favorite sundries, animal friends, and vices! DOS-Mart is splitting 50% of sales with the DAO (90 tez so far)!
Wait! There's more as greencross and @sgt_slaughtermelon also released their DOSPRESSIONISM collection with 33% of sales going to the DAO (145 tez already)! This doesn't even include royalties which are also split with the DAO (33%).
Speaking of royalties, @bodaciouspirate sent 4 tez to the DAO for sales of the DOS Peaks FWWM commemorative token (25% royalties to the DAO).
And since we only recently moved to tumblr for updates, a 0.14 ETH split was sent to the DAO from this February sale by greencross: https://foundation.app/@greencross/xenoscapes/1
Stay tuned for more April updates, @DOSPunksNFT Twitter Spaces, and tons of fun with Iteration!
