The Ultimate Guide to Josephine Baker's Style
The Roaring Twenties never go out of style!
We've been breaking down our list of 16 classic fashion icons everyone should know. Last week, we covered Janis Joplin, the soulful singer with a wardrobe as iconic as her voice.
This week, we're going all the way back to the 1920s (think flappers, Gatsby, and jazz!) because it's all about someone outrageous, provocative, and completely ahead of her time-Josephine Baker.
View the original article to see embedded media.
Josephine Baker was an American entertainer who became famous in France in the 1920s for her singing, dancing, and scandalous costumes. But even more amazing was her passion for civil rights. She fought against segregation and supported the French Red Cross and Resistance during WWII.
If you've never heard of her, you need to! So keep reading to find out more about Josephine's early life, claim to fame, and amazing activism.
All About Josephine
Born to Dance
View the original article to see embedded media.
Josephine was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1906 to a low-income family. She was only educated up to fifth grade before dropping out to work and support herself and her family.
Josephine was married twice as a child. Once, at age 13, and again at age 15 (which is where she got the last name Baker).
She escaped by performing. She was part of a vaudeville troupe and worked as a dancing street performer. This is where she was discovered and started dancing in stage shows.
Soon after, Josephine made it to Broadway, performing in massive hits like Shuffle Along as a chorus line dancer. She got an opportunity to tour in Paris, France, and never looked back.
Au Revoir, NYC!

Josephine made a huge impact in Paris. People were obsessed with her comedic skills, which she incorporated into her routines, as well as her provocative dancing and costumes. She could often be found performing topless or in wild, silly ensembles.
Her first iconic role was in a production called La Folie du Jour where she wore the now famous banana skirt costume-yes, you read that right. Baker performed in a skirt made of 16 bananas strung together (and almost nothing else)!
She found even more success as a singer and continued to get starring roles in the pictures and on stage.
She shifted her focus from performing during WWII to work for the Red Cross in France and the French Resistance. Some of this included top-secret undercover work, in which she would transmit hidden messages through her sheet music. So cool!
Paving the Way
View the original article to see embedded media.
Josephine returned to the states briefly in the '30s, and she was shocked at the brutal racism she encountered. The European star was exposed to awful headlines and mistreatment from people who were appalled to see an African-American woman be so successful.
Though she was bitterly disappointed, she didn't let that stop her. Through the '50s and '60s, Josephine made many trips back to The States to combat segregation.
She refused to play at segregated clubs, and even managed to get one of the most popular places in Miami to desegregate. She toured the country promoting integration.
She was applauded by the NAACP, but one of her most influential actions was in her personal life. Josephine adopted 12 children of different ethnic backgrounds hoping to teach people that anyone and everyone could be brothers and sisters. She raised them in a castle she purchased known as the Château des Milandes.

Josephine passed away in 1975 just days after performing a show celebration her 50 year-long career. The French government buried her with military honors, and her funeral was a star-studded affair.
Fashion Inspired by Josephine Baker
Josephine's style was famous for how little she wore on stage. From her cutout bras to her dangly necklaces that just barely kept her covered, Josephine's flashy accessories always stole the show. And while you probably won't be able to replicate her outrageous stage costumes, you can definitely still take inspiration!
Showgirl Status

Josephine was a French diva, but she brought with her the soul and style of the Harlem Renaissance. It was edgy, fresh, and unapologetic. In her stage costumes, she could rock tassels and fringe like there was no tomorrow. These kinds of fabrics made her dancing look even more fluid and eye-catching.

But she was best known for her risqué approach to fashion when performing almost nude. She had fun mixing crazy ideas into her style, much like the pop stars of today do!
Products: Top - Forever 21, Skirt - Missguided, Bralette - Forever 21, Bag - DSW, Shoes - DSW
1920s style is perfect for a going out look! But finding flapper-style pieces that don't look like costumes is a challenge. Try something more subdued, like a fringe skirt with retro details. (Unless you want to go all out with an actual banana skirt, then please don't let anyone stop you!) It has the fun, flowy movement of a flapper dress while still being modern. Josephine wore chain bralettes way before they were in style (like almost a hundred years ahead of the trend!) so don't be afraid to sport one. You can pair it with an off-the-shoulder top for a cute peek-a-boo effect, or even try exposing the piece a little more with a low-zipped bomber jacket or button-down shirt.
Curtain Call
Don't let the over-the-top kitschy accessories fool you. When the performance called for it, Josephine stunned audiences in decadent pieces, too.

The 1920s are a great decade for fashion inspo for formal cocktail outfits. Think pearls, feathers, and beads! Those may sound a little gaudy by today's standards, but they can add a beautiful and unexpected retro aesthetic to your look.
Products: Dress - Boohoo, Shoes - ASOS, Handbag - Modcloth, Headband - Forever 21, Earrings - JCPenney
This flapper-inspired dress is gorgeous and can easily be glammed up for an event with some classy heels and accessories. Beaded handbags were the trend in the '20s and are still a gorgeous and elegant choice today. If you're looking for an edgy cocktail look that stands out, think '20s!
I can't condone shaving your eyebrows off and going with a tiny penciled-on line as per traditional '20s makeup, but adding dark lipstick is totally okay, and laying your edges in waves is an easy way to cheat the flattened curls of the era.
Professional Powerhouse
View the original article to see embedded media.
Remember that at one point Josephine lived in a literal castle, so she knew all about elegance, both in her on-screen costumes and off-screen.
And her career expanded way past the 1920s. She was a civil rights hero throughout the '50s and '60s and an activist for her entire life. She dawned professional, powerful, and classically beautiful outfits that reflected her super-modern lifestyle. I mean, in this video she's wearing a slitted maxi skirt with matching crop top. Talk about legend!
Products: Earrings - Macy's, Brooch - Macy's, Skirt - Missguided, Top - Missguided, Heels - Charlotte Russe
Two-piece sets were a popular look from the '40s on, though Josephine's were always a little more flirty than the norm! The combo can be dressed up with a brooch (like Josephine did, an instant way to look classy and vintage) and a nice pair of earrings, or paired with sandals and a tote bag for a laid back look. Chances are, you've already got the two pieces, so experiment with what's in your closet!
Josephine's looks were always amusing, so have fun with pops of color in your jewelry. Wearing all one color (like JB did so flawlessly in that video) can be tough to pull off...as can a banana skirt or just a few strands of pearls instead of a top. So infuse your own style quirks. I personally love grandma-looking jewelry that's super sparkly and a little bit too much, so I went with classic teardrop earrings and a brooch. But Josephine had a very modern approach to fashion.
Will you be channeling Josephine Baker?
Whether you're ready to go out and buy a dance costume or motivated to get involved with civil rights causes, it's hard not to be inspired by Josephine Baker in some way! She was a beautiful entertainer with a passion for making the world a better place.

The Ultimate Guide to Janis Joplin's Style
Fashion for the wild child!
Over the last few weeks, we've been breaking down our list of 16 classic fashion icons everyone should know. Last week, we covered always elegant actress and princess Grace Kelly. This week, it's all about a completely different kind of super star-Janis Joplin.

Janis was a rock, blues, and soul singer. Her distinctly amazing voice and carefree approach to being herself have made her a symbol of '60s music and style. Keep reading to find out more about her early life, legendary career, tragic death, and legacy.
(TW: Janis's bio has mentions of bullying and substance abuse and may be uncomfortable for some readers.)
All About Janis
Bluesy Beginnings
View the original article to see embedded media.
Janis was born in 1943 in Port Arthur, Texas. The community there was extremely conservative, and Janis grew up singing in the church.
But she never fit into the cultural climate there. During her school days, she was bullied over her weight, acne, fashion sense, and her views on equality and sexuality. The other students humiliated her, and for a while she had no friends.
“Don't compromise yourself. You are all you've got.” - Janis Joplin
Janis hated Texas, and a lot of biographers believe her unhappy childhood left a life-long struggle with loneliness and self-acceptance. She made references to how hard it was having thousands of fans, but few people close to her.
Eventually, she made friends with a group of other outcasts in the area. This is how she discovered blues music and gained her reputation as the tough chick who could out-sing and out-drink any of the guys. She also developed her eclectic, messy style and knack for swearing in public.
Just Getting Started
View the original article to see embedded media.
Once she graduated high school, Janis made a bunch of attempts to find where she belonged. She enrolled in college a couple of times but never finished-she was always drawn back to music.
She left for southern California and began working as a musician, but her early use of drugs and alcohol stalled her from getting too far. She had to go back home to Texas to recover, weighing in at just 88 pounds.
“You can destroy your now by worrying about tomorrow.” – Janis Joplin
Her addictions to methamphetamine and alcohol were slowly destroying her, but so was the thought of staying in Texas. Once again, Janis set off to pursue her dreams.
Rock Stardom
View the original article to see embedded media.
During her four-year long recording career, Janis played in a bunch of different groups, like Big Brother and the Holding Company, The Full Tilt Boogie Band, and as a solo artist.
What made her stand out was how different she sounded from other female artists of the time. Popular women folk singers in the '60s typically had smoother voices (think Joni Mitchell or Mama Cass), and the soul singers from Motown had flawless feminine vocals (like Diana Ross). Janis's gritty, unrefined voice was unlike anything people had heard before (or heard since).
She was posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and she's inspired countless artists with her songs and covers like "Piece of My Heart," "Cry Baby," "Me and Bobby McGee," and "Summertime" (arguably the best version of the standard ever released!).
View the original article to see embedded media.
Her music was-and still is-so respected in the rock and blues genres, and her first albums were successful. But, her only number one song was released posthumously, as was her most successful album, Pearl.
She performed a still-talked-about set at Woodstock, and even got to play at Madison Square Garden with Tina Turner.
“You can fill your life up with ideas and still go home lonely.” – Janis Joplin
But throughout it all, Janis's ongoing battle with substance abuse kept going on, even as she made attempts to get clean. While still working on recording Pearl, Janis Joplin died of an accidental drug overdose, alone in her hotel room at age 27.
Fashion Inspired by Janis Joplin
When you think of the '60s, you probably think of matching sets and mod dresses or flower-child hippie vibes. Janis Joplin's look was neither of those-she was bohemian with an edge. Her style was busy and messy, but beautiful. Janis was true to herself and wore what she wanted to wear. In every picture, you can see her individual personality shine through.
And though that personality could never be replicated, we can certainly try! There are three things to remember when going for a Janis-inspired look: carefree, colorful, and crazy. She always infused pops of color into her looks, and she wore layers upon layers of wild pieces... regardless of whether or not they were conventional.
Laid-Back and Loving It
View the original article to see embedded media.
Even in her performance costumes, Janis always looked casually comfortable. She wasn't into the glitz and glamour of '60s fashion, instead opting for a more natural face and less pristine clothes. As you can see by this super modern-looking t-shirt and pants combo, she was decades ahead of her time.
Products: Top - Forever 21, Pants - The Gap, Shoes - Old Navy, Bag - H&M, Belt - H&M, Top Necklace - Kohl's, Bottom Necklace - JCPenney, Earrings - Forever 21
Janis loved to accessorize, so when channeling her look don't be afraid to layer on those necklaces! Bold earrings are in right now and are a great way to include her vibrant, boho flair.
She also loved to rebel, which is why I had fun mixing these nice pants with a rugged t-shirt. It allows you to be just a little more dressed up while still staying true to the bluesy-chic outfits of Ms. Joplin. Pick your own favorite band shirt or print and get even more messy with it.
Layers Upon Layers
View the original article to see embedded media.
Janis could wear a dozen different pieces and somehow not look overdone. Her staple was to wear layers of bracelets and necklaces over her layered outfits, which usually included things like vests, headpieces, and belts, along with lots and lots of jewelry.
Products: Cardigan - Forever 21, Necklace - Target, Bracelets - Kohl's, Jeans - Express, Tank - Target, Sandals - Payless
A good pair of distressed denim pants are a quintessential element of the bohemian wild child style. You could go all out with a fringe vest, but something like a lace and tassel cardigan brings a more modern aesthetic to the look.
Get as many beaded bracelets and necklaces as you can and rock them all. If you want to pay tribute to some of Janis's famous headwear, try working in feather earrings (a subtle nod to her feather headpieces) or even a faux-fur headband (like her iconic fur hat).
Woman of the Blues
View the original article to see embedded media.
When Janis performed, all eyes were on her. It was her voice that captivated audiences and made her a music legend, but photos of her singing have stuck around for a reason. She looked magical in her flowy tops and pants with wild prints and accessories.
Products: Top - Forever 21, Pants - Forever 21, Bag - ASOS, Sandals - American Eagle Outfitters
Bell-sleeve tops are so much fun, and Janis sported a lot of them when singing. They gave her a mystical aesthetic. Paired with comfy, printed wide-legged pants, they're the perfect combo for a casual but show-stopping look. As always, you'll need to go overboard with necklaces and bracelets, but if that's too much, try something like a standout bag with a unique print or shape. It will give you the boho color and vibrancy without the added layers.
Will you be channeling Janis Joplin?
View the original article to see embedded media.
Her easy-going style and infectious smile will never be forgotten. She may have been gone too soon, but her striking personality lives on in our hearts and our playlists. Janis's influence on music is one-of-a-kind.
Will you be sporting some layered beaded necklaces soon? Are you ditching your heels for some boho sandals and matching fringe vests? Let us know in the comments!

The Ultimate Guide to Marilyn Monroe's Style
Some like it hot!
We've been breaking down our list of 16 classic fashion icons everyone should know. Last week, we covered Diana Ross, the reigning queen of Motown and 1960s trendsetter.
This week, it's all about cinema's brightest star, Marilyn Monroe.
View the original article to see embedded media.
Tomorrow, August 5, marks 56 years since we've lost the famous “blonde bombshell.” But with every passing year, her image grows more and more beloved.
Marilyn's blonde hair, red lips, and beauty mark have made lasting style impressions on us all, but in the 1950s, she was known for being the biggest sex symbol of the era.
Her life has been written about and re-imagined countless times, like in the Oscar nominated My Week with Marilyn, or the ill-fated but still adored (especially by yours truly) TV series Smash. But there are a lot of sides to Marilyn you probably don't know about. Keep reading to find out more about her early life, film career, tragic death, and lasting legacy.
All About Marilyn
Fade In On a Girl...
View the original article to see embedded media.
Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson in Los Angeles, California in 1926. Her father was absent, and her mother suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, spending much of her life in institutions.
Marilyn spent her childhood in and out of various foster homes and orphanages. (TW) During this time she was sexually abused.
When her last foster family wanted to move out of California, laws prohibited them from taking then Norma Jeane with them. Their solution was to have the 16 year old marry Jim Dougherty, the neighbors' son, so she wouldn't go to an orphanage.
Gentlemen Prefer Marilyn
View the original article to see embedded media.
Dougherty was a marine and had to leave Norma Jeane behind for a while. Around this time, she was working at a factory and was discovered by a photographer to shoot pin-up style photos for the troops. (Fun fact: Marilyn always supported the armed forces and would go on to interrupt her honeymoon to perform in Korea, where the troops adored her.)
By the late 1940s, Norma Jeane had dyed her brown hair lighter and began a modeling and film career. She landed a contract with 20-Century Fox and chose the stage name Marilyn Monroe.
I never wanted to be Marilyn--it just happened. Marilyn's like a veil I wear over Norma Jeane. - Marilyn Monroe
It only took a few years for Marilyn to become a world-wide sensation. But she was typecast and sexualized in films as a the “girl next door” or the “dumb blonde." She often felt limited. She was devoted to the craft and trained in acting, hoping to play different roles.
There's No Business Like Show Business
View the original article to see embedded media.
Marilyn had a bad reputation on movie sets. She suffered anxiety, stage fright, and low self-esteem (among rumored other issues relating to her childhood traumas).
To cope with this, she took dangerous combinations of drugs and alcohol. As a result, she often showed up late, forgot her lines, and could take hours to film a simple one-line scene.
But in the 1950s, people weren't understanding of her mental health issues, and the executives and men on set were cruel to Marilyn. She became co-dependent on her acting coach and friend Paula Strasberg, much to the dismay of her directors.
View the original article to see embedded media.
Many biographers question Strasberg's influence, as she wanted Monroe to be a method actor; and though she encouraged Marilyn to go to psychoanalysis, she wanted her to use her traumas for acting.
I've spent most of my life running away from myself. - Marilyn Monroe
As she rose to fame with films like Niagara and How To Marry A Millionaire, Marilyn's personal life became a hot topic in the press. She married Joe DiMaggio in a passionate but doomed relationship which lasted just nine months. (After Marilyn passed, Joe continued to send flowers to her grave every week for twenty years.)
"We are all of us stars, and we deserve to twinkle."
View the original article to see embedded media.
Tired of being underestimated, in 1955 Marilyn founded her own production company (the first woman to do so!) and partnered with Fox under a new contract that would let her pick her own movies, directors, and cinematographers.
She was a women's and civil rights activist, too. She notably helped Ella Fitzgerald get a break by demanding she play a famous venue and attending every show front row.
I don't want to make money. I just want to be wonderful. - Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn remarried to a playwright named Arthur Miller in 1956 and her career kept growing, but her personal health declined. Arguably her most famous and acclaimed film, Some Like It Hot, is also recognized for her famous bad behavior on set.
View the original article to see embedded media.
In 1961, Marilyn divorced again, and in 1962 began working on her final film Something's Got To Give. But by then, she was severely dependent on substances and struggling with depression and other physical health issues.
Fame will go by, and, so long, I've had you fame. If it goes by, I've always known it was fickle. So at least it's something I experienced, but that's not where I live. - Marilyn Monroe
Something's Got To Give had to pause production to allow Marilyn time to heal, but the movie was never finished. Marilyn Monroe died in 1962 of a drug overdose.
View the original article to see embedded media.
Today, she is still a symbol of style, beauty, and sex. But fans, critics, and biographers' attitudes have shifted towards her infamous behaviors. She's no longer seen as a wild party girl, and instead her personal traumas, mental instabilities, and dedication to her work despite it all are respected and championed.
Marilyn was a feminist and an artist. She demanded rights over her own career in a time when movie contracts exploited actors, and was a talented actress, who managed to sparkle and brighten up every second of screen time even in her darkest personal hours.
Fashion Inspired by Marilyn Monroe
View the original article to see embedded media.
Marilyn's fashion is constantly imitated, usually with hot pink gloves or flowy white dresses, but I'll let you know now that we'll be taking a different approach. Yes, Marilyn was always in full-glam at press events, rocking the most stunning and expensive designer dresses you could imagine. But she worked closely with photographers to capture a different, more human side of herself.
Keeping it Casual
View the original article to see embedded media.
Marilyn loved being photographed reading, as it was a major hobby of hers. And when not in costume or red-carpet attire, she sported a smart-casual style that was very trendy in the '50s.
View the original article to see embedded media.
Products: Top - Boohoo, Bag - The Gap, Shoes - DSW, Shorts - Urban Outfitters
A turtleneck with short sleeves is total casual Marilyn, as is pairing that with high-waisted shorts. For a little bit of fun, get patterned shorts like stripes or houndstooth, which Marilyn has been photographed in before. Her daytime looks blended cute and sophisticated pieces into an original aesthetic.
Cutting Edge Color
View the original article to see embedded media.
Marilyn loved color and could pull off a floor-length bright red dress or matching turquoise suit like no one else ever had or has since! Her extravagant personal style was so eye-catching because of her choice of figure-flattering shapes and bold, playful colors. Fun fact: Marilyn loved costume jewelry pieces and didn't like owning expensive ones.
Products: Romper - Forever 21, Blazer - Forever 21, Shoes - Old Navy, Bag - New York & Company
A more accessible way to add Marilyn's fun colors into your wardrobe is to choose one bold stand-out piece (like a jacket or jumpsuit) and keep everything else simple. Both on-screen and off, Marilyn mixed business-y, formal elements like blazers or button down shirts with playful and flirty elements, like low-cut tops or leggy bottoms. Choose your accent color and accessorize around it using the Marilyn method!
Let Me Be Your Star
View the original article to see embedded media.
Okay, I had to do something glamorous for our last look! Marilyn loved performing, and that included putting on a show for her fans when she was out in public and taking gorgeous photos for publications. Shiny, shimmery gowns were a go-to for her.
Products: Dress - Boohoo, Earrings - Belk, Shoes - DSW, Bag - Windsor, Lipstick - Ulta
A low-cut, body-con gown is a must for a Marilyn feel on a night out, as Ms. Monroe was always making headlines for her ultra-feminine looks. She enjoyed the attention and had fun playing with her sensuality in outfits, so strappy heels and red lipstick, two sensual staples, are also classic Marilyn elements.
Will you be channeling your inner Marilyn?
Marilyn was a fashionista, and even over 50 years after her passing, we still look to her for style guidance! Her beauty and fashion won't ever be forgotten, but we'll remember her perseverance, dedication, and talent forever, too.

Fashion Inspiration: Westworld
Because even if you're living in a pre-programmed loop, your outfits don't have to be boring.

After more than a year, the wait is over - Season 2 of HBO's critically acclaimed series Westworld is airing in just 8 days. In order to prepare for ten more episodes of grunge piano covers, existential soul-searching, and edge-of-your-seat plot twists, this article will revisit the major players of Season 1. (So, warning, there will be mild spoilers.)
For those of you not in the know, Westworld is about a futuristic theme park of the same name. In this park, visitors are transported into a faithful recreation of the Wild West - from the frontier town of Sweetwater, out to sprawling prairies and staggering canyons. Visitors are free to act however they like - because instead of human actors, the park is populated by super-realistic robotic "hosts," who behave realistically in repetitive loops, except that they cannot harm a living creature. Things start to change when a new software update is launched, causing the hosts to act out in dangerous and unpredictable ways.
Have you ever questioned the nature of your reality? If so, Westworld is the show for you.
Today we're taking some fashion inspiration from Westworld in honor of the Season 2 premiere. Here are some Westworld outfits, with modern, fashion-approved takes on the cast's classic Western wear:
There's a Path for Everyone
A blue slip dress and white sneakers create a modern version of the damsel in distress.
Products: Dress - Nordstrom Rack, Shirt - Abercrombie, Hair Pin - ASOS, Belt - Express, Sneakers - DSW, Blush - JCPenney
The main character of Westworld is Dolores Abernathy, a host who lives as a rancher's daughter. Dolores loves painting and the cowboy Teddy, but leaves her loop when her parents are murdered by a gang of bank robbers. She then begins to explore more of the park, as well as her own abilities.
In this look, a blue maxi dress and a brown belt mimic Dolores's dress. A white shirt and white sneakers provide warmth and practicality (which you might need if you want to carry out a heist with a strange man). Pull your hair back with a clip reminiscent of the maze through which Dolores travels, and add some peachy-pink blush for a girlish look that can take you from an art class, to a date, and even on an unexpected day trip.
Black Hat or White?
Whether you're good or bad, a pair of boyfriend jeans can create an effortlessly rugged outfit.
Products: White Tee - Nordstrom Rack, Scarf - Nordstrom Rack, Stila Lipstick - Revolve, Brown Boots - DSW, Jeans - Target, Black Tee - Nordstrom, Belt - Nordstrom Rack, Black Boots - Nordstrom Rack, Lime Crime Lipstick - Revolve
When arriving at Westworld, visitors have a choice - they can take a white hat, symbolizing that they want to be a law-abiding citizen, or they can take a black hat and act on their wildest desires. Dolores goes on a journey with white-hatted William and black-hatted Logan, who have very different ideas about what they want to accomplish while in the park.
This look is a twofer, showing that the difference between good and evil is all about small choices. A pair of boyfriend jeans creates an air of comfort and rustic flair; this cropped pair is the perfect length to showcase a great pair of shoes. Emulate our hero with a ruffled white tee, a blue scarf, taupe lipstick, and a pair of tan Chelsea boots; or dress like our villain with a distressed black tee, a wide textured belt, vampy red lipstick, and a pair of studded boots. Good or bad, these outfits will give you all the confidence you need to survive a trip to Westworld.
It Doesn't Look Like Anything to Me
Whether you're working in the office or out in the field, a minimalist outfit can keep you looking cool.
Products: Blazer - Target, Shirt - L.L. Bean, Jeans - H&M, Necklace - Amazon, Sneakers - Nordstrom, Hair Gel - Target
Key to the success of the park are the staff - especially Bernard and Elsie, who write and maintain the code that runs the hosts. These no-nonsense workers have an incredibly challenging job - figuring out how to make the hosts look and act just like you and I, while ensuring that they behave exactly as they're supposed to for the safety of the guests. When hosts start to act out of their loops, Bernard and Elsie have to work under uncertain circumstances, even going out into the park to find out what's going on.
Channel Elsie's utilitarian look with a chambray shirt and black straight-leg jeans. Add a collarless blazer for a bit of formality, and a pair of high-top sneakers for a creative twist. A compass necklace is a reminder not to get too lost in the wilderness of the park, and hair gel keeps your hairdo looking put-together, even when you're unraveling a treacherous mystery. Using a neutral palate and hard-wearing basics lets you create an outfit formal enough for a class presentation, but still comfortable enough for a long study session.
Welcome to Westworld
Mixing structured pieces with more
Products: Jacket - ASOS, Dress - 6pm, Ear Cuff - Urban Outfitters, Earrings - ASOS, Eyeshadow - Net A Porter, Sandals - DSW
While Westworld lets visitors experience the world in whatever way they wish, and find out their true selves; the true importance of the park comes in the form of the hosts, who begin to question their identity and form their own consciousness. Are they real? If you can't tell, does it matter?
This outfit mixes a structured high-neck dress with a distressed denim jacket, to mirror the conflicting nature of the hosts. Add strappy sandals and a sleek ear cuff for a futuristic vibe, and do a messy smoky eye for a rebellious edge. The key to the hosts' consciousness is the ability to look within themselves - so when you're wearing this, trust yourself, and don't be afraid to break the rules.
What's your story?
What did you think of Westworld? Are you excited for the Season 2 premiere? Let me know in the comments below!

Let's Talk Fashion
Who or what inspires your style? "Recently I've been inspired by 1970s fashion trends. I really love sleek turtlenecks layered with a fun wool lined coat, especially for fall and winter. Corduroy has also been a new material that I've started to get interested in for a warm vintage look."
Where do you like to shop? "I like to shop at Urban Outfitters and Free People. The clothes might be a little pricey, but I really value quality over quantity."
Why did you choose this particular outfit? "I chose this outfit because I am usually running late and I value comfort a lot... so anything that I [can] quickly throw on and doesn't need too much to make it work is something I look for when I'm shopping."
What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? "I think that fashion is about expressing yourself in a way that feels natural and comfortable to whomever is wearing the outfit. Everyone should have something unique that they want to wear to separate him or herself from the norm. But for those who want that norm look, I would say check fashion magazines like Teen Vogue, Cosmopolitan, etc... to get that young, fresh look. Even some blogs like Free People's is great for inspiration."
What are your favorite trends right now? "My favorite trends are the flare jeans and fisherman top hats. I really think that adds a super cool touch to almost any outfit."
Do you have any favorite fashion designers? If so, who? "The TOMMYXGIGI collection is really amazing because I love punk fashion. Fishnet, plaid, and destroyed pieces are my favorite. Also, some spunky leather boots to complete the look adds a whole other level of sass."
What do you do for fun – do you have any unique hobbies or interests? "I've recently gotten into photography, but I also really enjoy sports and being active so exercising or hiking outdoors on a beautiful day is always something really enjoyable to me."
If you could raid anyone's closet, who would it be and why? "This might be cliché but I would probably raid Kendall Jenner's closet. She has some killer clothing that I would die to have. She also has a really simple yet interesting look, which is what I try to achieve."
Elements of Kayse's Outfit
1. Sweater

Comfort is crucial to Kayse. She paired a turtleneck sweater with leggings so she can seamlessly style an outfit before heading to class.
2. Denim Jacket

Denim will never go out of style and Kayse tops off her look with this denim jacket. Adding a distressed denim flair to any look makes it instantly edgy.
3. Shoes

To deal with all the WVU hills throughout campus, Kayse pairs her outfit with comfortable high top sneakers. “I always have to wear tennis shoes or flat booties when walking to class because being comfortable is everything to me,” she says.
Now we want to know what you think!

5 More Ways to Throw The Ultimate Halloween Party
Don't let hosting spook you.
Earlier this week, we did a post on how to throw an awesome Halloween party. Today we're back with part 2, showing you some more ideas for spending time with friends on Halloween.
Whether you're ready to don a costume and party or just looking to watch scary movies with friends, odds are you'll end up being social on Halloween. If your group doesn't have an official plan yet, consider hosting a round of drinks or snacks at your place before heading out. Even if you plan to stay in and avoid the chaos, it's not too late to get everyone over for some early evening fun.
Here are some more Halloween party ideas to aid in your October 31st preparation:
Drink Options:
Every good hostess has a variety of beverages to offer her guests, even if it's the choice between tap water and San Pellegrino. Halloween is your chance to get wild, however, and show off your inner bartender!
Alcoholic cocktail
Over 21 and ready to kick things off? Try these "BOO-berry" Moscow Mules from Lauren Conrad's blog. Not only is this drink based on a classic beverage, but the recipe lives on beyond October.
Non-alcoholic cocktail

Under 21 or wanting to limit the debauchery? You can still make some delicious and Instagram-worthy cocktails. Lemon, mango, and orange combine in a fruity and festive pitcher that looks and tastes like Halloween. Bonus points if you leave the pitcher next to these DIY candy corn vases.
Make a centerpiece

It wouldn't be halloween without pumpkins! If you don't want to get your hands dirty and carve through orange goo, these modern painted pumpkins from The Beautydojo are perfect.
Line them up near your entryway and outside your door to let your guests know exactly where the party is. You can also grab three pumpkins in different sizes to make a large centerpiece arrangement.
Treat your friends

More power to you if trick or treating is in your plans, but let's be honest-most of you guys aren'tgoing to be running door-to-door for candy. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't get some cute treat bags though!
One of my favorite Halloween party ideas is making theseSimple DIY bags from Thirty Handmade Days. They can fit small goodies for your friends that are guaranteed to make eyes light up. Everyone loves a cute surprise!
If you're planning to go out to another party or bar afterwards, you can turn these into mini emergency kits. Fill 'em with gum, extra hair ties, lip balm, floss, etc. Your friends may laugh, but they'll thank you in the morning.
Let the games begin

You might have forgotten these old-school games, but they're just as fun (if not more) when you're an adult. Watch your friends struggle to bob for applesoreat donuts off a string. Just make sure you set these up in an area you don't mind getting a little messy.
Make some memories

Photographer Jennifer Lee has an easy photo booth setupavailable on her blog. While designed for children, that doesn't mean you can't have fun posing with cheesy props and signs.
If you and your friends are in costume, you may not even need to design anything special. You can hold your Moscow Mules (see above), or sparkly pumpkins and let them do the talking!
Are you planning to host a Halloween event?
